Generally speaking, if I list a player on my trade block, I expect interested parties to make the first offer. Inquiries about needs and so forth are fine, but saying: "I'm interested in your player, look over my franchise and make me an offer" is kinda annoying. Am I asking too much here?

I've done that before when new to a team as a replacement owner and an owner expresses interest. It can be a good way to take advantage of someone else's scouting budget too.

I am often guilty of the "look at my team and tell me who you want" thing...the reason that I say that is I feel it is often the best way to come to an agreement that both sides find to their liking. In that scenario, I already know I am going to like who I get in the deal so by saying "make me an offer" I'm also giving the person who listed the player a chance to pick who they want to receive.

That being said, I can see how it might be a bit annoying to do that legwork.

Yeah. Also, if someone makes a reasonable (but not good enough) offer -- then I consider it on me to counter. It's just as annoying when one side is expected to make all the offers.

If I tell you I'm interested and you blow me off, when I circle back I plan on offering you something invaluable. Then if you get offended by it, that's your fault

If you offer me something invaluable I'm accepting! That said, if I have a guy on the trade block, interest is shown is by making an offer (with the option of asking what the owner is seeking). It's like buying a house. As the seller, I put it on the market, and the interested buyer makes an offer. The better the offer, the more likely I accept. If I am selling for $400K and the offer is $390K, I might take it. If I get an offer for $380K I might counter at $390K. If I get lowballed at $200K, I might counter at $395K (or not counter at all).

Regardless, the first offer comes from the buyer. The seller can act offended or whatever depending on their negotiating style, but I think that (a) the buyer makes the first offer, and (b) the seller should be prepared to counter reasonable (yet unacceptable) offers.

What I usually do first when I see someone on the trade block that I am interested in, is to send a TC to the owner asking what they would like in return for that player. That seems like the proper thing to do to get the negotiations started. I find it annoying when someone sees one of my players on the trade block and sends me a trade offer out of the blue without contacting me first. I almost always just flat out reject.

I do prefer the inquiring team to at least suggest names after asking what I might be seeking. But it is also a negotiating tactic if they say "Look at my roster and tell me who might get the deal done." It shows how much you value the player being shopped. They might jump at your offer or back away. Or you don't find anything you like and you tell them that.

I'd prefer that then offers of trash. I'll put up a prospect or big league player and get offers back with pitchers with splits in the 50's that have no hope of making the majors.

When an owner says 'Look through my minors and see who you like' I find I have a better shot at getting a deal done if I can name 3 or 4 players.

It is not often I get an offer for players on the trade block. I just send unsolicited offers for players of interest. I think(could be wrong) that a lot people do not spend as much time looking to make offers etc. If I get a counter great. If someone post them on wc and I am interested ill hit them in in tc.

I can't count the times I express interest in a player and ask what the owner wants, then make them an offer and they simply decline and refuse to engage in any further discussion because the offer wasn't to their liking. So for the most part, I express interest and wait for the listing team to make an offer. They already know what I want. They can let me know what they want and we can go from there. It's less of a waste of time for everyone involved.

And it's the same if I'm in the other seat. If I list a player and someone tells me to look over their roster, it doesn't take much to scan their team and see if anyone jumps out at me. I'd rather that than receive 10 awful, unsolicited offers and have to explain to the other owner why it's a terrible deal.

I'm totally good with non-solicited offers. And I'm totally fine with owners that respond to questions by making the first offer. I just think the initial expectation should be the buyer makes an offer to the seller, and that reasonable offers are countered so that one party isn't on the hook for all the legwork (at least for guys advertised as available).

I have no idea what others value or how they value them so I just pursue whom I like. If I get a counter im happy, if not I may send a few offers to get an idea if I flat get rejections on a few I quit. I have found some people do not even respond to trade chats but will accept offers.

This is really different strokes. Come as you are. Smoke em if you got em. I don't mind "see anything you like" as long as the other owner isn't in a hurry. I usually mull over my trades, and it's going to take me a little longer if I have to look around. I'm going to assume, unless I'm offering something of great value, that the other guy isn't just going to hand over the first best prospect I see.

And I go for win-win. I'm usually trading something different than what I'm getting back. Don't like dealing with guys who are all about just seeing if they can filch your best player.

For that reason I usually hate the unsolicited offer. All the time playing this I've only ever received one unsolicited offer which made me say, "hey that's not a bad idea." Usually it's "here's some stuff I don't really want, can I have something of yours that you want to keep?"

I like trade chat. If I establish a rapport with another owner it can lead to further deals down the road, you get comfortable dealing with a guy and you know his playing style.

Biggest no-no, bait and switch. Happened to me once, early. The guy got me interested in his pitcher, tried to reel in the noob. Said "don't want much, maybe a sandwich pick." I said, look at these two guys, which one do you prefer? He comes back, "huh, they're not that good, I might deal him if I can get both." EFFF YOUUUUU. The two players became my GG CF and best slugger for several seasons.
