Wants to Play, but I Want to Redshirt Him Topic

New signing wants to play, but I'd prefer to redshirt him. I did not say anything about redshirt during recruiting. Is there a way I can tell if he'll get mad if I redshirt him? His WE is 71. Does that make a difference?

You should be able to redshirt him without consequence. If he won't take it (if his WE drops), you can simply remove the redshirt and his WE will restore.

I just redshirted a recruit that had a preference of "wants to play." I hadn't mentioned redshirting while recruiting, I didn't promise him a starter's spot or minutes, and he accepted the RS and even thanked me in a nice email.

OK, thanks, guys.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Some folks have suspected that players who want to play might be less likely to take a redshirt; others say there might be something where the player is more willing to take it if he feels there are a solid 10 or 11 in front of him, or that the odds are linked to how highly the recruit is “rated” (presumably the system ranks all recruits, even though only the top 200 in every position are shown) related to the program’s prestige. I don’t know if there’s anything to any of that or not.

All I know is it’s really annoying when players I haven’t made promises to get upset about a redshirt possibility. Entitled jerks.

From what I've noticed, the "wants to play" preference is related to recruiting and not redshirting. If you promise 10 mins the pref turns to "good" if you promise 15+ mins the pref turns to "very good".

If you promise any player minutes or a start they will not be happy with a redshirt, regardless of their playing preference.

If the player has the pref, but you don't make any promises, they have the same chance of being ok with a redshirt as a player without the pref.

Again, this is just from what I've noticed, I could be wrong.

You can give them a redshirt risk free like sol says above. If they take a huge WE hit just remove the redshirt right away, but I do not believe their reaction is related to their playing time pref specifically.

Redshirted him with no incident. His response was that he was expecting it. Even though his recruiting preference was Wants to Play. So I learned something new today. Good day.

Based on the 3 guys I've redshirted without notifying them during recruiting (I say that to say this is an extremely small sample), the guy whose ovr was in the top 5 on the team was upset about it (-8 to WE, I think - but it was still a good decision because he needed the extra developmental year and I would've maybe won 5 games with him instead of the 3 I won without him... 1st year of a rebuild & sim signed 4 bad recruits before I took over. Signed this guy in RS2 that season).

In two other worlds, the players' ovr was around 10th-12th on the team and they were fine with the redshirt.

So my limited experience makes me think where the player's ovr ranks on the team is a big factor in how he takes the (uncommunicated) redshirt decision.

also... I found this post bc I'm thinking about RSing this guy:

Athl, Reb, Blk, Per, St, & Dur are all greens, and Def & Pass are blues. My 7 returning players have higher ovr, so at best he'll be 8th best ovr on the team. I'm wondering if anyone with more experience redshirting has thoughts. With all those greens and a current WE of 56, I think he's going to be a (D2) stud either way. But with his current 28 athl, I think I'd rather have his 4th and 5th seasons with ~maxed athl (and ~maxed everything else) vs have him contribute as my ~8th or so best player this season & have him do something like this in his 4 yrs: OK 8th man, good 6th man, good starter, stud - and I think it's worth risking the WE hit this season.

I may be too generous in projecting him to be a "stud," but I think he'll at least be a strong all-around player who can rebound, defend, score, dribble & pass at a decent-to-good level (poor man's Draymond, maybe?)... but I'm also hoping his athl & per stay green long enough to qualify him by anyone's & everyone's definition of "stud."

...I bailed on this rebuild after figuring out that the new jobs logic (as I understand it) makes it a bad idea to slog through slow rebuilds & a better idea to hop on a good team. But this is the guy I redshirted. It also didn't hurt too much because the WE hit only dropped him from 83 to a still-strong 75.

Don't give him any minutes the first few games in thee regular season and then he will have no problem taking a redshirt.

Good to know, thanks!

First time doing this, so... if I leave him off the depth chart then he will not enter the games, correct?

Correct.

What about a kid that you tried to redshirt before the season started and he didn’t accept it so I removed the red shirt. He hasn’t played a game and won’t. Do you think he will accept the redshirt after the season? Anybody had any experience with this?

If the recruit already had a bad WE drop when you attempted to apply the redshirt earlier in the season, then subsequent attempts to apply the redshirt will have a worse outcome (bigger WE drop) on subsequent attempts in the same season (obviously this is to prevent exploiting of just repeatedly attempting to RS until the user gets an acceptable outcome to their liking).

It's unlikely that attempting to RS him in the next season will be acceptable either as sophomores rarely take RS well (the exception is a very low rated player which you gave a start/minutes promise during recruiting but is still your lowest rated player in the following season after all your recruits show up).
