these lists are ones i added later to expand the rankings so there would be something for everyone (most coaches who stick around a while have a shot at being top 50 in some world). i think the rankings are reasonable through to the bottom but they were designed to differentiate between elite dynasties, so its obviously not going to be perfect when used like this.

Mlitney brought me here. Didn't even know this existed. This is crazy cool! Thanks for doing this. Is there a place where you've already explained in detail how you create the score? I also noticed it says unweighted. Is there a weighted version? If it would be easier to sitemail me or if you prefer your work stay mysterious I can appreciate the allure. Just curious because this is really cool. Thanks for putting stuff like this together.

In a semi related topic, this sort of reminds me of how Gridiron Dynasty has a web page that posts their own version of recruiting class rankings that is much more accurate than what the game produces. It is definitely one of the things I miss about playing that game. Keep up the good work Gil, we appreciate you.

the rankings are a totally open book, and i'm sure i've explained it somewhere - but no idea where that would be. basically, post season success and RPI are combined to make a flat score (technically RPI rank - like RPI 1, 2, 3), and then world strength is included which impacts the cross-world rankings. i've thought about converting from RPI only to something better, but in the olden days when i made this, RPI was better than NT seeding even probably, and i didn't have the schedule data to use my own ranking scheme. i basically only get the history page for each team, and use that (this started as a list of longest streaks of NT appearances and the like). what would be sweet is scraping the NT tournament page to pull the seeding, because now with the new seeding (from 5ish years ago), the seeding algorithm is of pretty high quality and would be *way* better than RPI alone.

the 'unweighted' is kind of legacy thing that can be ignored. when i originally added dynasty lists to the longest streaks stuff, i was like - i want to rank the best dynasties of all time, but also the best from today. i felt all time, every season in the period (say 10 seasons) should be ranked equally. but the best program right now, i felt should be weighted for recency. however, i hated the way the recency stuff i wrote worked (it was geometric / multiplicative - so like last season worth 75% as much as current - the consequences are undesirable). so i basically just bailed and figured, if you want to know the hottest program right now, use 5 year lists, and if you care about real dynasties, use 10 or 20.

here's the points system on RPI rank and post season - which was recently adjusted to remove the overweigh on deep PIT runs benis commented on (which was intentional because of old dumb NT seeding - but doesn't make sense any longer):

//rpi 1 = 10
//rpi 2 = 9
//rpi 5 = 8
//rpi 10 = 7
//rpi 17 = 6
//rpi 26 = 5
//rpi 37 = 4
//rpi 50 = 3
//rpi 65 = 2
//rpi 100 = 1
//rpi 150 = 0

so #1 rpi would be 10 points, #2 would be 9, #5 would be 8 (#4 would probably be 8.333, #3 8.666)

for post season:

//pi2 = 1.2
//pi3 = 1.44
//pi4 = 1.73
//pi5 = 2.08
//pi6 = 2.5
//nt1 = 3
//nt2 = 4.5

where pit1 means you made pit and lost in the first round, and so forth. nt7 means you made round 6 and won (champion). i think i used to have PIT champion as 4.5 points so it was worth half way between nt round 1 loss and round 2 loss, now a pit championship is worth less than a nt 1 loss by a little bit. this doesn't matter much in the main dynasty lists where the teams being ranked are amazing and don't go to the PIT, but its DEFINITELY a very good change for those single world ones that go all the way to 50! so thanks to benis for pointing out how out of whack that was.

this is the current world strength which is basically multiplied by the base score (post season and rpi). hopefully this roughly correlates to the fuller worlds because that is all it is based on. i wanted to check it for myself and it doesn't compile this nicely for me so kinda building it here in case anyone wants to poke holes in it... or is just curious which worlds are considered most competitive in the rankings? rankings across divisions are meaningless.

within a single division, the spread is really not that big, this isn't intended to be a huge factor. nonetheless, it destroys the ability for modern teams to get ranked in the all time because the world strengths from when worlds all had 150+ are probably 30% higher or something. still, it looks like the spread within a division right now is about 10% in each division, so the fullest world folks (highest world strength really) will be getting about a 10% higher score for the same post season and RPI, as someone in an emptier world. the fullness of the world spread is substantially higher than 10% to cause a 10% score here. i think when i was looking at pop data a couple days ago i was seeing 30% and even bigger spreads, in extreme cases.

i'm just kinda spot checking world strength, i've never been too positive that actually worked. i thought d3 wooden was supposed to be a tough one but that is probably 10 year old info, but it raised an eyebrow being the weakest. so i spot checked there.

Wooden - 1.056

those are the biggest spread in d3, that would give knight a 9.5% lead over wooden by world strength.

here's the actual population data over the last 10 seasons, which is as far back as population is considered (it is not as simple as considering population, for example if a world has 150 humans most of which have been tenured at the same program longer, that would have a higher score than another world with 150 where there was a lot more churn).

so that is a pretty massive difference. right now knight has 58% more coaches than wooden, in d3. the average over the past 10 seasons is 55% higher. now d3 has freehd which makes d3 world pop on the whole less reliable, but still - i think its a good example.

so here in this case - if two guys win the title with #1 rpi - the knight guy gets 10% more credit. is it 10% harder? i don't know, perhaps, but perhaps not. but similarly, a guy with a NT2 and a 25 rpi is going to get 10% more credit in knight. is being 25th best of about 104 teams 10% harder than being 25th best of about 67 teams? probably - and probably significantly more than that. IMO, 10% is more likely too low a figure, than too high - but i made it that way intentionally - i intentionally placed world strength's magnitude of impact below where i felt it truly should be.

anyway i doubt anyone cares but if anyone is curious how the sausage is made on the lists, that pretty much concludes it, i think.

This is really neat. I love this and enjoyed reading it. I'm interested to see how Rupp have changed after last season - it just ended today and our team won the title with 1st rpi. Likely to see a big 5 year rank swing, but less so for the 10 and 20 season.

Again, Gil, awesome stuff. Had to read certain parts twice for my feeble mortal mind to (mostly) comprehend, but I think I get it. Do you create a new thread every time you post stuff like this? I'd love to know your timetable so I can check back in. I mentioned this to Mlitney, I think this is the kind of stuff that WIS should be reaching out to the base and either gifting you some seasons or something and figuring out how to actually embed this into the game.

I don't want to get everybody in a frenzy, but something like this would be much more palatable when/if prestige ever gets a face lift.

Even outside of that, I've always thought this game could use some sort of badge system to encourage players to go after certain types of achievements. It could be purely cosmetic or just something to add to our WIS profile page. Things like first Final 4 as a coach, finishing as #1 in RPI, and then making it onto the board as top 50 dynasty over 5/10/20 years, etc...

Those are the things that keep (some) people coming back because there is always a new challenge that way. I'm still relatively new to the community and I'm extremely proud of how well I can rebuild programs and get them into the NT, but I'm still seeking my first F4. It would be cool to have something cosmetic to show for it. It would also be pretty awesome if something like this influenced your individual coaching prestige and gave more transparency to the coaching carousel.

there's a thread, dynasty list index and more, which i used to maintain links to all the forum threads i'd created on, grouped by the run date. the lists are just SO much text that i felt like using 1 thread over and over would get insane. but maybe it would have been less insane? but i forgot how to access that coach_billyg account for a while and don't have forum rights anyway (from not buying a season - the logic is really dumb - even active coaches can lose forum access if they haven't bought a season in 2 years, its happened to me and others), so i stopped using it. plus there was some forum bug where every time i edited it, it got un-stickied, and so i kinda lost the will to fight the system - plus copy/pasting 100 times as the distribution mechanism is so horrible. running the stuff is easy, but posting it sucks.

anyway, my current plan, which i've loosely considered for ages but sort of meaningfully intend to do now, i sort of explicitly dropped to no teams in part to encourage myself to do it (its just been too crazy lately, that is more like actual work, even if its not a lot of it)... is to put up a REALLY simple (and really ugly) website where you basically choose which list you want from a couple dropdowns and then it takes you to the page that is the list. i think that will be a lot better, i've only posted these a dozen times or a bit more, i need to automate it...

if the WIS folks wanted the code i'd definitely hand it over, but i kinda doubt its worth anything. i mean, it is just java code, so i'm guessing even .NET programmers could read it (sorry, had to). but the vast majority is stupid output formatting or reading the data - they'd do all of that differently. there's 50-100 lines of clean looping code that could perhaps be of small value , but really the only useful thing is the ranking algorithm, which i think is pretty good, and if they agreed that could save a bit of time tuning their own. but still - from a project management standpoint - if it made sense for them to do the dynasty rankings having my code, it would have made sense without my code and they would have already done it. so not holding my breath, but i agree it would be cool if they did it!
