I applied for USC and Texas in two different worlds, and got outright rejected in both worlds. Each was after only one season at D2.
Neither of the jobs were filled in the same cycle I was rejected (I think), but both were filled by more experienced coaches later.
I assume that other coaches had applied when I applied, but I don't know if I would've gotten the jobs if I had been the only applicant or if one season at D2 is too little to get higher-caliber D1 jobs. IOW, I don't know if the rejections were based on my lack of experience or because other applicants had more experience.
if you are instantly rejected (next 3 hour cycle 2/5/8/11), it always meant you would not get the job regardless of who else applied etc. (well, this is absolutely true if the job goes unfilled - if the job gets filled maybe it could mean you lost).
if you aren't immediately rejected, it has always meant that you will get the job if nobody beats you - effectively that you qualify.
i assume the above is all still true and thus that you would not have gotten the job if nobody else applied.
