This is where we should put our rosters.

If some of you are able to screen shot your roster with salaries to here that's fine.

I am not technologically advanced and cut and paste isn't working so I'll show a second way.

Please include your salary to the dollar as I will build your team. If we did it right the salary should be exact. If it's off, then we used a wrong version of a player.

I always like to do a little writeup on these types of things, so I'll drop it in here, too. I must have tried every possible combination before figuring out a way to get the pieces I wanted in here without leaving much money on the table. I had about 17-18 guys set, but shuffling around the rest of them took me through the ringer. I think I'm happy with the final balance here, even if I did have to leave off a couple guys I wanted to use.

I started off with the 44 Cardinals, a versatile team with a lot of quality pitchers, some cheap bench guys, and a useful enough player at almost every lineup spot if needed. I wound up filling 3/4 of my rotation (Mort Cooper, Ted Wilks, Harry Brecheen) and two starting hitters (Walker Cooper and Johnny Hopp) from the Cards. I couldn't figure out how to afford the $9M Musial or the great swingman Red Munger, but no complaints here.

The 74 Brewers were a brutal team to work with and tied my hands the most by far. They had one useful pitcher, reliever Tom Murphy, and not a single position player with an OPS# as high as .800. Don Money is a sure-handed 3B, so he was an easy guy to slot into the lineup. Johnny Briggs is a really average OF, but sometimes that's what you're stuck with. For the longest time, I had George Scott locked in at 1B, too, though it was far from a potent Boomer bat that season.

The 64 Colt 45s were another troublesome team to use. They made those Brewers look like an offensive juggernaut by comparison. Even their "best" hitters were below par. Fortunately at least they had a few useful pitchers ... and of course one of them got daggered. I had a roster that worked with Bob Bruce in there, but once he got the knife I had to rethink a few things. I wound up with Ken Johnson taking his spot in the rotation, along with a pair of solid relievers in Don Larsen (still living off that perfect game!) and Claude Raymond.

I took my final team, the 24 Indians, to fill out the starting lineup and offer some options as backups that could have left me in big trouble for a dagger. Forget pitching, though for a while I worked Sherry Smith in and out of the rotation and he wouldn't have been too bad. We will have a chunk of the lineup from this squad, with Tris Speaker, Joe Sewell, and Charlie Jamieson. I would certainly have considered using Glenn Myatt had he not been daggered, but at least I had Cooper available.

So, where did the biggest challenges come from and what were the solutions? For one, second base was only bad options. I nearly stuck a no-hit, no-glove Nellie Fox in there just because he had 500 PA for $2.5M. But then a combination occurred to me that could make better use of bench players I had to take anyway. Turns out my backup SS Tim Johnson has A/D- ratings at 2B and nothing else I need from him. That allowed me to go cheaper at 2B with Bob Lillis, who also can't hit but at least has A+ fielding. George Fallon can pick up any extra PA, and that makes better use of the roster spots at a position where I wasn't going to get anything anyway. At least I can minimize errors there even though there's no range to be found.

I needed to try to roster the best hitters available to me, who were all outfielders. Tris Speaker was an easy call to play CF, and his Indians teammate Jamieson has the highest AVG available at .359. I had to try to get Musial or Hopp in there somehow, but there was no shot at fitting Musial's $9M salary. I needed to use Briggs or Scott from the Brewers, and after taking a long break and returning to this later I realized I could roster Hopp as an OF but play him at 1B, where he's got strong ratings. That allowed me to use two cheap 1B and minimize wasted salary.

What I like about this offense is the combo of Jamieson-Speaker-Hopp at the top, though there's not much strength behind them. Still, it's almost the best offense I can manage with these restrictions, a .295/.360/.423 slash. Homers just aren't going to happen with these guys, but they all hit a lot of doubles so we can stick them in Sportsman's with the +3.

As for pitching, I'm happy with the 3 Cards in the rotation with Johnson, a trio of decent relievers behind them, and then a few guys who will just eat long/mop innings mostly to fill it out. It's going to be tight with 1,354 IP, but we've got a solid team WHIP of 1.16 and won't get hammered by long balls either (0.42 HR/9). Everyone's going to have weak spots in a league like this, along with some wasted salary. I hope I made the most of the possibilities here. We'll find out soon.
