Time capsule core 5 Topic

This is a theme league that will cover a 3 year era in the NFL for each team chosen. The choices are listed below. Your time capsule core 5- must be within the top ten salaries for any year within your selected years at each of the 5 positions: QB, RB, WR, OL and DEF. Does not need to be the top salary at each position, but within the top 10 at each position in your time capsule. Whoever posts first for a specific choice below will be awarded that selection and it will be updated on this topic. No live drafting. Just post your time capsule team and core 5. Single year switches and trades will be discussed below. This league is open to ANYONE and EVERYONE.

Once a owner posts their core 5-- those players and units are exclusive to that team only. Only 1 Tom Brady in the league. OL and DEF units are exclusive within the time capsule selected, but not for the entirety of that franchise, or the time spent in that particular city. Therefore, you may see multiple Rams OL or Saints OL as long as they remain in their time capsule. Only 1 of the 1951 Rams OL.

Whoever posts first is awarded the exclusivity to that core 5. The rest is up to you with a 75 mil salary cap. As the owners enter their team, I'll reach out via sitemail should any edits need to be made. Teams selected and entered AFTER you submit your team into the league-- they may take a player to be in their core 5 that overlaps with your time capsule. So for your other 15 selections outside of your core 5 (excluding K, P, and ST) are unprotected and may be selected by another team until the league is full. Please edit your teams when this occurs.

Hypothetically for 1941-43: the exclusive core 5 could consist of:

DEF: 42 Redskins. OL: 43 Bears. QB: Sammy Baugh. RB Harry Clarke. WR Don Hutson.
(years are listed here just for the example- you do not need to disclose the years when posting your core 5- unless received via trade. All these selections are the required top 10 in salary for their positions for 1941-43).

You may also change your core 5 at anytime up until the league fills. Any adjustments to your core 5 must be posted in the league forum. If you drop a player from the core 5, they are immediately available for the taking.

No clones. No waiver wire. However, you may switch out 1 of your era years for an available single year on the list. So, you could drop 1943 for any available single year. This switch must be posted here in the forum to officially claim that year. Say you choose 1987. You new core would 41-42 and 87. We would then list 1943 as available to anyone for a switch. Only one switch (of a single year) per owner. There is 1 special exception to your designated years--- trades.

Trades: are allowed with any of the 120 core players or units officially selected (via post in this forum) in a team's core 5. Thus, no trading anything that is not claimed as your core 5. Trades are also not allowed between teams with the same owner. Your final core 5 must be a top 10 salary at each position for your time era. If you move Barry Sanders in a trade for Crazy Legs Hirsch, his replacement could be Emmitt Smith-- if he is still available AND is a top 10 salary for any of your designated years.

Ground rules for trades: The era years must be listed by both owners of what they exchanging in the trade (this ensures we keep the top 10 salary intact). Please use sitemail to each other to negotiate and then post in the forum when an agreement is made. You may post in the forum what you have on the trade block and are seeking in return. A two trade limit per owner. And a maximum of only 2 players/units total can be moved per team via trade(s). Hence, your time era core 5 must be final with 3 specifically from your designated years. Trade deadline will be when the final team enters the league.

Example of a core 5- with a year switch and a trade (years 2020-2021 and 1967): Originally selected 2020-22 and then switched 2022 for 1967.

Final exclusive core 5 (time era minimum of 3 in bold): QB Sonny Jurgenson via year switch to 67. RB: Jonathan Taylor. 2009-11 WR Victor Cruz (received in trade for WR Stefon Diggs 2020-21). OL Packers. DEF LA Rams. The selections in bold must be from the designated years 2020-21 and 1967. The other 18 roster spots can be any player or unit (from any year) that is not taken by another team within their exclusive core 5.

Quick synopsis:

1- Select a core 5 of your designated years at QB, RB, WR, OL and DEF. Must be a top 10 salary at each position in your 3 year time capsule.

2- Time capsule and core 5 must be posted to be official

3- 75 million salary cap

4 - single year switches allowed (of what is available). 1 switch per team.

5- Trades are allowed. Specific years must be listed. Limit of 2 trades or 2 player max total in trades per team. Only core 5 players can be traded.

6- Your final core 5 must have a minimum of 3 players/units in your time capsule. Trades are the exception to fill the other 2 spots.

7- Any changes to your core must be posted. Team edits and trades are allowed at any time until the final team is entered.

***Based on interest, we will consider 2 teams per owner after the league has a minimum of 12 teams entered. As the creator of the league, I will enter a team now into the league as just a placeholder to secure the league number, and owners may enter their team whenever they choose. But you also can remove your team for adjustments until the league is filled.

Very interesting, very complex... I answered my own questions reading this over a couple times (need to do that sometimes) - just 1 question... confirm how the single year swap works. I been working with diff eras and ive narrowed it down

You would just drop one of the years you claimed. So if you selected 85-87, but then decided that 74 has what you want, then you could drop either 85, 86 or 87 in exchange for 74.

Sequence:
1- post and claim 1985-87
2- see 1974 as a better option. claim/post 1974 (if available as single yr) and drop 1985.
3- 1985 is now available. 1974 is added to your time capsule and no longer available.
4- your core 5 will now consist of players/units from: 1974 and 86-87.

I'd like to keep this on 1 page in the initial post, so everything is in 1 place. So, I would just keep editing the claims by the years listed and add the core 5 posted there as well. We could also add a year switch and trade section after that, so it will contain the birds-eye view of all transactions completed.

DEF New England Patriots

Official. Will update in initial post. 2017 is now available. 1961 is removed.

I encourage anyone considering joining to plug in the players and see the salary cap challenges. While these are elite players, they may not be the very best years for each player or unit. The DEF being a top 5 for all teams in their time capsule ensures that DEF will matter more. And, therefore some decisions will need to be made with a 75 mil cap. Nicely done CFS. This is formidable and also blocks some highly sought after selections in other time capsules.

Thank you ... was debating between this and 1 other one... and then debating on swapping the defense year for the bubble... but this was simple enough and I got the 1961 sought after guys like you said. Hopefully we get more guys ... i will post on my league boards

Does this mean that if I take 58-60 I wont be able to use the top RB (Jim Brown) - I get to use the #2 RB for those years ?
1/5/2024 4:57 PM
That is correct jfg. Jim Brown is taken. You could still swap a single year or trade. You could take the years mentioned. Or move to another time capsule. So many options. Excited to see what you choose.

Go seay00 with another interesting concept! I’m in. And hopefully I can pull off a trade! :)

I’ll take 97-99 and swap 99 for the CF-vacated 2017

Def - Chargers
OL - Saints
QB - Tom Brady
RB - Barry Sanders
WR - Rob Moore

And open to trading!

Jfg - Just in case you had the same misunderstanding I had the first couple times I went through the rules - you don’t have to use the #2 most expensive, just one of the top 5 most expensive. Because it is top five salaries for five positions, I read the original post as being you had to use the most expensive for each.

Thanks, I really wanted to use Barry so took 97-99 but there aren’t many 75 mill league QBs in those years. 2017 also got me a better OL.

dan is correct. I have edited to read better in the initial post to read as such:

Your time capsule core 5- must be within the top five salaries within your selected years at each of the 5 positions: QB, RB, WR, OL and DEF. Does not need to be the top salary at each position, but within the top 5 at each position in your time capsule.

I like to jot down ideas while they are fresh in my head. And easier to recall later. Possible adds could be:

- list the median core 5 for each team as a indicator of the talent being spread out and balanced. This adds curb appeal, but removes some of the mystery. This was my initial thought, but I didn’t want to query every team to be honest. In this scenario, the owner could alter the core 5 or claim it as-is. Median core 5 would be the 3rd best for those positions. This could be added later to say these are the 6 or 8 choices available with a ‘display’ core 5 to claimed and edited if they prefer. Some like doing all the work, some don’t is my thought.

- allowing to trade 1 claimed single year for another claimed single year (between 2 owners). This would be apart of the 2 trade max, so players, units and years are a max of 2 total. Year switches with 1 owner are a standalone item with a limit of 1 per owner.

- bottom six of regular season records would have first claims in a 2nd season.

- another idea is to make this into a progressive league for season 2. Everything just moves 1 year up for the next season. The 2020-22 team would become 1941 and 2021-22. All the same rules apply, but you have your returning time capsule.

this is what I thought - i took the #1 expensive guy for each position
