In all honesty, I would rather see what changing the sim would do before changing anything else.
I really fear that changing something this drastic may cause GM's to bail out.

I agree with this thought, but I would not be adverse to lowering the goalies TOI requirenment. I always thought this was too much time. Say, drop it by 100 hours, to 260 which would give most goalies (assuming current usage is typical) a 6-8 year career.

I won't bail out (at least immdeiately) even if major changes occur that I disagree with. I would still try and find a way to compete within the new rules. If I found myself completely unhappy with the league then, after notifying someone, I would probably leave. I don't HAVE to win to be happy, but I do need to be able to be competitive.

I have to say also, that I have been playing the GD sim, and I wish they would get one going for hockey. I believe that is the closest thing to what we have been trying to do with this league. Does anyone have any pull around here... OKP?

I don't think scoring is down because of goalies. My goalie is getting lit up this year and it's because of the weak defense in front of him. He had a GAA of 1.61 and a Save% over 94 last season.

To see scoring go up again we need to address the Def rating of our players. But I'm not for anything drastic.

Is there any news on a new version of the sim? If we wait for it how long are we talking about?
2/3/2008 9:53 AM
It's been delayed for a while now, but there is some beta testing starting up again shortly. But I haven't got a clue when there will be a new update after that. It’s supposed to be an offensive tweak though, but it’s hard to say if it could be useful to up the scoring in the MLD. But like discussed a while back, we could perhaps ask admin/Mike Welch if it's possible to simulate a few seasons in our league when the new version is in place?
2/3/2008 11:17 AM
OK, more than a couple of thoughts. A nice "too long" comin' up.
First, I started this round of conversation because okp brought up the goalie TOI issue in his state of the league sitemail prior to the draft. In the draft I saw it as an opportunity to open debate on it. That's all it was. I am not an advocate of any drastic change to this league.
The main reason I think something might be done about the way we are using goalies is that right now it's fairly cosmetic. We find one or two that do the job and stick with them. There's no roster movement, and certainly no trading. I think if we could get a little of those things going it would be good for the league. I did not anticipate - at all - owners who would be resistant to roster movement. Different strokes; lesson learned. But I don't actually see changing goalie TOI as doing much to enhance scoring, unless we made it so drastic that there would be an influx of really poor goalies, and no one wants that.
Now, about using a new version of the sim. The one we use in this league is a few generations old as you know. I think the prospect of changing the engine has just as much if not more capacity to revise our gameplay, than messing with something like goalie TOI. And - what if it came with a side effect, like we'd have to lose all our league records to switch over, or similar?
So of course we'd like to run some test sessions before we made a decision - would Mike Welch have the resources to do that for our single league? Might not exactly be a priority. And anyway, the current engine is still very much skewed toward D-ratings. The "new" engine we've heard about being tested for awhile now seems like it's nowhere near ready for release IMO. Which is why, of all the issues I've discussed here, I haven't bothered to address that one.
And yes, blee, it's the d ratings. I don't really want to start talking about scoring again because it's the real hot button. I don't care what the scores are in this league. My team can't score worth a damn anyway.
2/3/2008 11:52 AM
Whomever asked if I had any pull, I have no pull!!! but I have contacted admin to see if I can get a test run done of our league with newest sim engine. No reply on it yet, I'll keep everyone posted. In the meantime...
How about 250 TOI and 350 FP TOI for the goalies??....... mainly just to improve their turnover rate! Whatever happens on the offensive end of this is anybodys guess.
As for time line, I still say the earlier the better, but if you feel it(new goalie rules) should kick in at start of season 12 I guess that is ok. I'd prefer season 11 but it sounds like a few GMs prefer Yr12.
2/4/2008 10:39 PM
sounds good to me
2/6/2008 10:31 AM
Why not go 280 TOI and then goalies can't be FP? If you have an option for goalies as FP then once any team gets a goalie they think is the real deal then sooner or later everybody is going to have a goalie as their FP.

You know I've done it before, And I can do it some more, I've got my eye on the score, I'm gonna cut through the floor,
It's too late, It's too soon, Or is it...
Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick... Boom!

We are a quarter of the way through Season Nine, MLD faithful... high time to get caught up on your poppin'-fresh MLD Power Rankings!
Let's take a look at how this first go-round of league play has shaped up... note the number in brackets next to each team is where they finished last season. Roll it!
1 - Brewster Bears (7) - 15-1-3-1 - corbs1019
No big surprise at the top, folks, the freakin' Bears have been defeated only once in regulation play over the season's first quarter. Credit a recommitment to defense, as the Bears are only one of two MLD teams so far with a top-five offense and defense.
Everybody's Watchin' - RW Cristobal Pisila, as the reigning MVP has picked up right where he off last season.
2 - Yorkton Millers (8) - 13-3-4-0 - drg330
A red-hot offense started off the seaon in fine form for the Millers, with no drop-off of late... the league's top shooting percentage team leads in goals scored by a sizable margin.
Everybody's Watchin' - D Jeff Rogan has become a top MVP candidate, leading the league in scoring and assists.
3 - NY Pussycats (19) - 11-4-4-1 - ukol
The resurgent Pussycats shot straight to the top of the POW conference this season and have cooled of late, but they're still top-five in both goals scored and goals against.
Everybody's Watchin' - C Reid Kantojarvi is among the league leaders in goals, scoring, and MVP voting.
4 - Yorba Linda Yowlers (3) - 12-8-0-0 - yogsloth
Uncharacteristically quiet so far on offense and beset by early injuries, the Yowlers have stayed near the top of the league thanks to their ever stingy defense corps.
Everybody's Watchin' - G Anton Boucher, contending for a third Vezina trophy in his final MLD season.
5 - Winnipeg Jets (6) - 11-7-2-0 - gocam
Much like the Yowlers, the Jets are always in contention thanks to their top-five defense. Lots of parity early on in the rankings, folks.
Everybody's Watchin' - G Tuomas Seitamaa, a longtime organizational favorite, has taken the #1 job this season quite capably.
6 - Helsinki Lions (5) - 11-4-4-1 - finnski
The Lions continue their fine play, possessing one of the league's better goals for-and-against ratios.
Everybody's Watchin' - D Ossi Ventoniemi has taken his team-leading scoring up another notch this season.
7 - Chilliwack Bruins (10) - 10-6-3-1 - bremiro
Goalies are in for a long night against the Bruins, as the defending champs are the league's leading team in shots on goal.
Everybody's Watchin' - D Orlando Carpenter, clearly the team's MVP to this point.
8 - Maricopa Wildcats (21) - 10-7-2-1 - vicpat
Inarguably the biggest surprise of this season has been the fine play of the longtime cellar-dwelling Wildcats, who are finally reaping the benefits of their long rebuilding process.
Everybody's Watchin' - RW Jaromir Postinen, one of the league's top rookies this season.
9 - Kingston Crooks (9) - 9-8-3-0 - onekrazypuck
The Crooks bang, the Crooks score, the Crooks give up goals in bunches too. Never a dull moment with one of the MLD's most exciting teams to watch.
Everybody's Watchin' - RW Les Golmorblood, as the rookie seems hellbent on becoming the new heavyweight champ of the MLD. His greatest competition may, however, come from teammate Moose Tamsi.
10 - Combermere Cay (11) - 8-7-3-2 - vmorte
The Norris is one of the league's most competitive divisions, and the Cay have yet to find breakout form but you can't fault one of the league's better offenses.
Everybody's Watchin' - D Colin Oras joins the pack of MLD defensemen in the MVP running.
11 - Pontiac Firebirds (13) - 10-8-2-0 - damag
Defense is still what it's all about in the Pontiac, where shots on goal are tougher to come by than anywhere else in the MLD.
Everybody's Watchin' - G Leo Xavier, who leads a stellar crop of newcomers. "X-man" is among the top rookie goalies thus far.
12 - Valhalla Vikings (15) - 9-8-1-2 - modo21
The Norsemen have been up and down so far, but still possess one of the POW conference's more dangerous offenses.
Everybody's Watchin' - C Tapio Thidiske, who after being warehoused last season is once again proving to be one of the MLD's most consistent scorers.

MLD Power Rankings Part 2...
13 - Anoka Tornados (4) - 8-7-4-1 - big_drive
The Tornados have hovered around the .500 mark all season so far, looking for the right blend of veterans and youth.
Everybody's Watchin' - G Steve Dufresne, as the wily MLD vet has taken over in the Anoka net this season.
14 - Wyandotte Hurons (12) - 8-8-4-0 - max259
Another team searching to find its identity this season, Wyandotte has yet to lay down a signature performance in the early going.
Everybody's Watchin' - G Lindy Saharinen, one of the MLD's most promising rookie netminders.
15 - Gotham City Knights (1) - 7-8-5-0 - jaydenw31
Retirements have hit the Knights hard this season, with their offense nosediving toward the bottom of the league... the Knights are dead last in shooting percentage.
Everybody's Watchin' - RW Yvan Hallama, as the Knights' proud franchise player will spend his final season leading a youth movement.
16 - Henderson Hornets (2) - 6-8-5-1 - blee3467
Like the Knights, the Hornets have been decimated by retirements but to their defence corps, which has them hovering at the playoff line in the CCC.
Everybody's Watchin' - rookie Ds Christopher Boyd and Kenny Blankenship, who have no trouble scoring but need to firm up their defensive play.
17 - Beaverdale Bangers (22) - 8-11-1-0 - jmerch
The Bangers seem much improved defensively this season, and are now waiting for the scorers to catch up.
Everybody's Watchin' - rookie C Julian Sangilainen, who leads the team in shots and could be its next breakout scorer.
18 - Indianapolis Racers (18) - 7-9-4-0 - smeric
The Racers are still searching for consistency, but the offense seems more potent than last season.
Everybody's Watchin' - RW Adie Karetie, who started the season blazing hot but has since cooled somewhat, is still among the goal scoring leaders.
19 - Halifax Mooseheads (20) - 7-11-2-0 - slorhav
The Mooseheads have used more players than any other team so far, fighting injuries and inconsistent defensive play.
Everybody's Watchin' - rookie RW Udo Palovaino, who may already be one of the team's most well-rounded forwards.
20 - Encinitas Blades (24) - 6-10-3-1 - jbar8888
It's a long way up from the bottom, but the Blades have made a healthy start of it so far, being competitive at both ends of the ice.
Everybody's Watchin' - D Frank Kilpio, leader of the resurgent Blades defence corps.
21 - Roswell Aliens (14) - 6-12-0-2 - rammers
After just missing out on the playoffs, the Aliens' have fallen apart defensively this season.
Everybody's Watchin' - rookie RW Lew Feldt, who seems intent on taking the PIM title away from Kingston single-handedly.
22 - Okanagan Ogopogoes (17) - 4-11-2-3 - canuk
Goals are hard to come by in the OO, where the team's leading scorer is C Wildor Arina, with 4.
Everybody's Watchin' - rookie RW Wyatt Vahakangas, who puts up shots, goals, and PIMs in bunches.
23 - Intercourse Dutchmen (23) - 4-10-6-0 - bigbadgreen1
The youth movement continues for the Dutchmen, who are developing their youngsters exclusively, with somewhat respectable results.
Everybody's Watchin' - rookie LW Philip Heilanen, already among the league's top goal scorers.
24 - Hernando Hit Men (16) - 6-12-1-1 - thewaffleman
Who can figure the Hit Men out? After last season's playoff appearance, this season's defensive collapse is disappointing.
Everybody's Watchin' - LW Blaine Dawe, who is far and away the team's best player.
FIVE STARS (because I can)
1 - D Jeff Rogan, Yorkton Millers
2 (tie) - C Reid Kantojarvi, NY Pussycats & RW Cristobal Pisila, Brewster Bears
3 (tie) - G Jani Ranua, Helsinki Lions & C Ossi Ventoniemi, Helsinki Lions
THE BIG STORY:
With only a few extremely strong teams, and only a few very poor performances so far, this shapes up to be one of the most competitive MLD seasons yet! We should have a much clearer picture of who's for real and who's not by the All-Star Break. Till next time, keep it UNREAL!
2/9/2008 3:12 PM
Great work Damag! :) Crooks would have been much higher had it not been that 6 game inter-conference swing...... brutal!!
btw guys, the "official" decision regarding goalies is still coming.... keep an eye on your sitemail. I was hoping to finalize it today or this weekend but its been a very busy baby shower weekend on my end so far and Sunday isn't lookin good either.
BUT it is coming!!
2/9/2008 7:56 PM
Hey, the Birds would have been much lower had it not been for that inter-conference swing... : P
