I've been reading this thread, mostly for amusement but also because I try to pick up bread crumbs of knowledge from threads even if they're mostly ******* contests. I was left wondering if it was true that the 2-3 Update has destroyed the value of gameplanning and that underdogs couldn't win any more.
I offer this as a 1-off sample size for discussion - I'm not claiming it proves a single thing, other than maybe I got lucky. But last night, my Abilene Christian (Smith) team (RPI 142, SOS 258 thanks to a rich diet of cupcakes) upset #14 ranked E. Central.
ACU-ECU Box Score
Frankly, I was stunned. I have a large junior class of mediocre defenders and athletes and their first 2 seasons are among the worst imaginable: a composite 6-48 W/L record. This season didn't look to be much of an improvement, either, since I haven't had time to refocus my recruiting in the right direction yet.
Looking over the game log, I have to believe that a big part of the reason I won was gameplanning. I almost always play slowdown (re: poor athletes) and I went +1 last night to limit ECU's guards. ECU, meanwhile, went -1 for some reason - maybe he thought he could ignore my guards and try for more rebounding? Certainly my front line isn't very intimidating. He got his rebounding: +17 on the boards, but my guards won the game, topped off by my SF hitting the tying shot with 0:23 to go, then my big C hitting the winning FTs at the end of regulation.
It'll probably be the only upset I pull this season, and I have no hopes of a post season bid (which was why I padded my non-con). But I wonder if there was some effect of the 2-3 update here, or if this was just one of those lucky breaks we all hope to get once in a while?
