A quick recap of my draft...

Pick 1.3 - Barry Larkin (ss)
Picking #3 overall, I knew I wasn't getting Joe Morgan. I was never taking Tom Seaver (he always underperforms for me). My decision was going to be between Bench and Frank Robinson. When Rose went #2, I figured out that I am a lock to get either Bench or Robinson with my round 2 pick if I took Larkin first.

Pick 2.2 - Johnny Bench (c)
ejstockman took Chapman & Votto, so I still had the same choice. Bench was the only good full-time catcher, so if I passed on him, I would have to piece together something in the later rounds. I know Bench doesn't perform well in the sim, but it's all relative. He was clearly the best choice, based on position scarcity.

Pick 3.2 - Frank Robinson (of)
Not a shock that Cueto, Seaver & Soto went. Jose Rijo was the seemingly obvious choice, but how can I pass on a guy i strongly considered taking in round 1. Let's have some fun and score some runs. I already know that I am playing in Great American Ballpark with the +2 HRs. Of course, Rijo gets taken two picks later.

Round 4.3 - Gary Nolan (sp1)
I so badly wanted to take George Foster here. What an offense I would have (although that would make 4 right handed power hitters). I need a SP that has a low HR rate and Gary Nolan recently pitched well for me in the Rule V league.

Round 5.3 - Jim O'Toole (sp2)
I was thinking about taking Abernathy here, but joerat1 sniped him right in front of me. I had Rob Dibble all typed in and ready to submit, but then I realized there was a big drop-off in SP if i missed out on O'Toole. Foster is also still on the board. So tempting. I also figured out that if njbigwig took Dibble after me, he would jump me in the draft order next round by 25K.

Round 6.4 - Rob Murphy (rp)
Unbelievable. Of course njbigwig not only takes Dibble but then grabs George Foster in the only round he picked in front of me (other than round 1). I need a RP who doesn't give up HRs. There is no position player that merits a pick here. No SP worth taking either.

Round 7.2 - Bill Henry (rp)
The cheap Murphy pick allowed me to jump to pick 2 this round. I considered Tony Perez here (another RH power hitter) and also Scooter Gennett, but 2B is a deep position. When nothing else jumps out, it's RP time.

Round 8.2 - Gabe White (rp)
Of course, Tony Perez goes... That's ok - I need some left-handed or switch hitter with gopd OBP to set the table for my power hitters. Taking the best RP on the board.

Round 9.1 - Bip Roberts (3b)
Scooter Gennett goes. I will continue to wait on 2B. Need a 3B here. Best OBP and also a switch hitter. Easy choice.

Round 10.2 - Kal Daniels (of)
I started looking at 1B, which is usually a deep position. But for some reason, it isn't that deep for the Reds. I had my eye on Sean Casey with this pick and joerat1 got me again. Hal Morris is the next in line, but I will wait. I need another lefty with good on base. Kal Daniels ins't a full time hitter, but his stats are awesome in 430 PA (.335 / .429 / .606).

Round 11.2 - Hal Morris (1b)
He doesn't have the pop that Casey does and is a worst fielder, but .332 / .383 / .474 isn't terrible. His best feature is he's another lefty. Now I have more balance, with three righties, two lefties and a switch-hitter.

Round 12.2 - Jim Brosnan (rp)
Round 13.1 - Jeff Shaw (rp)
This is where I probably should have completed my offense, but I still didn't have a right-handed relief pitcher. Nobody had taken a RP since I took G.White 15 picks ago (I could have waited). I should have grabbed either Bernie Carbo or Dave Parker. But I decided to wait. Remember that I only have two starting pitchers, so I am trying to get as many solid RP's as possible. Pretty much everybody had their OF filled.

Round 14.1 - Jeff Keppinger (2b/3b/ss)
I went to bed after the Shaw pick and had decided I was taking Bernie Carbo and his .454 OBP with my next pick. njbigwig takes him one pick before me. What the hell? He already had Foster, E.Davis & K.Mitchell. Oh, I guess Mitchell can't play full-time. Well that sucks. I should have taken Parker here, but Griffey Jr. is still out there as a fallback option. So I grabbed the best part-time 2B/3B/SS, which I need to cover for Larkin/Roberts (and possibly 2B if I take Doran).

Round 15.1 - Jack Billingham (sp3)
I thought everybody had OF covered, but njbigwig takes his 5th outfielder in Dave Parker. I guess Mitchell is moving to 1B, now. Is he trying to screw me? This is round 15 and he has only 4 pitcher but 5 outfielders. Anyway, I need SP innings and Billingham has 294 medicore innings. I am gambling that nobody will take Griffey Jr., otherwise I will be stuck with Adam Dunn.

Round 16.2 - Brandon Phillips (2b)
I actually targeted Bill Doran (488 pa) as my starting 2b because of his .415 obp and the fact he's a switch hitter. Guess what, njbigwig took his 67-pa season right in front of me again. Better get that pinch hitter before your 2nd RP or 3rd SP. Actually, I might not have gotten Doran. ejstockman jumped in front of me this round and may have taken Doran to play 3B. I guess I will settle for a $6.9 million, A/A second basemen that hit .305. Like I said, 2B was deep. (I would've been fine with Todd Walker, who didn't even get drafted).

Round 17.3 - Ken Griffey Jr. (of)
Not as good a hitter as Dave Parker, but at least he's an A+ range in the outfield, so there's that. Funny thing is... I wanted Doran/Parker, but settled for much better fielders in Phillips/Griffey Jr. (with only a slight downgrade in hitting).

Round 18.3 - Brad Lesley (rp)
The short-inning relievers are starting to get drafted.

Round 19.3 - Jose Guillen (of)
This was actually the last "must-have" player for me. I needed a platoon partner for Daniels. The rest of the picks are extra pitchers and pinch hitters. Billy Hamilton is a defensive replacement (B/A+) and a great pinch runner.

Round 20.3 - J.J. Hoover (rp)
Round 21.3 - Don Gullett (sp4)
Round 22.3 - Jon Nunnally (of/ph)
Round 23.3 - Manny Sarmiento (rp)
Round 24.3 - Yonder Alonso (1b/ph)
Round 25.3 - Billy Hamlton (of/pr)

Love the write up schwarze - now you know why I wanted to be in a different division than the Bigwig
5/27/2020 1:13 PM
I don’t usually do these draft write ups, don’t want to let too many people inside my head for it’s a scary place but I feel the need for redemption.

Pick 1.1 – Joe Morgan 2B
My all-time favorite player. No brainer, so happy to have 1st pick since my friend, PedroCerrano had the first pick overall the last couple of times. (1970’s and Red Sox draft)

Pick 2.4 – Tom Seaver SP
I was hoping that Bench might slide down to me by some miracle, thought he was an automatic first rounder. I went into the draft thinking as a Reds fan that they never had any starting pitching so I have to grab three starters. Can’t go wrong with Seaver.

Pick 3.4 – Jose Rijo SP
That’s number 2. Very happy to get him here.

Pick 4.4 – Pete Schourek SP
That’s number 3. Felt it was a stretch and reach here but I was sticking to my guns to get three starters early. Seeing the hitters that are still available here (George Foster) made this the toughest pick BY FAR in the draft for me. In fact, after I made the pick, PedroCerrano (doing the Braves draft) reached out to me because he thought someone had hacked my account and made that pick. LOL

Pick 5.4 – Rob Dibble RP
A number of solid relief pitchers have been selected and I am torn between Dibble and Foster here. I saw if I took Dibble I would move up in the draft by one spot so I took Dibble because he is my favorite RP that the Reds ever had, hoping that Foster would slip through two more picks. Fingers crossed.

Pick 6.3 – George Foster OF
Christmas came early, I grabbed George. Again, one of the nicest and most humble players you can ever meet.

Pick 7.4 – Tony Perez 3B/1B
Tony was an easy choice, I can use him at third or at first. Outside of Votto, the Reds didn’t have a wealth of first basemen. I get some flexibility plus another one of the Big Red Machine.

Pick 8.4 – Eric Davis OF
Got skunked on Concepcion (part of the Big Red Machine – theme here) had to go in a different direction. Morgan is going to lead off, Eric the Red has a good glove, OBP and speed. I will bat him second behind Morgan and use the speed on top of the line-up. Besides Eric Davis is only one of two players in the history of MLB to steal 80 or more bases and hit 25 or more homers in the same season. Good enough for me.

Pick 9.4 – Zack Cozart SS
Light on plate appearances but the slugging percentage spoke to me. I will bat him low in the order and spell him with players with good gloves either Pokey Reese or Freddy Galvis, if I can draft one of them later.

Pick 10.4 – Johnny Edwards C
Need to draft a platoon at catcher since Bench wasn’t an option after the Morgan pick. Edwards bats lefthanded and had ample plate appearances to be the bigger half of the platoon, good place to start. I’ll take catcher, David Ross with my next pick to complete the platoon.

Pick 11.4 – Kevin Mitchell 1B
The Ken Griffey Sr. pick was a slap in the face for me. I wanted him (Big Red Machine theme) in my outfield, thought my luck would continue and he would slide some more. Took Kevin Mitchell for 1B, Perez now locked in at third. Ross can wait.

Pick 12.4 – David Ross C
The platoon is completed and it is good, not Johnny Bench good but certainly acceptable.

Pick 13.4 – Bernie Carbo OF
Morgan and catcher, Johnny Edwards are my only left-handed batters. Bernie’s on base percentage and left handed bat are a necessity, his glove is week but okay to play in OF with good fielders George Foster and Eric Davis.

Pick 14.4 – Dave Parker OF
Davis and Carbo (and Mitchell) are light on plate appearances, another left-handed outfielder will complete my outfield/first base needs. Was going to take Dave Parker or Ken Griffey Jr., despite the earring I took Parker because he had more plate appearances. Parker was the first player as I recall that wore an earring, certainly a scandal for this (then) teenager. Couldn't believe that Griffey Jr. lasted so much longer after my pick.

Pick 15.4 – Bill Doran 2B
Joe Morgan is batting lead off and has only 639 plate appearances, I need a platoon player with numbers worthy to platoon with Joe, enter switch-hitter Bill Doran.

Pick 16.4 – Pokey Reese 2B/SS
Helps complete SS spot with Zack Cozart and can spell Morgan/Doran at 2B.

Pick 17.4 – Norm Charlton RP
Okay, after grabbing three solid starters and Rob Dibble (833 IPs), I may have become a little overconfident that I can draft enough relief pitchers to round out my staff, certainly Schwarze has obtained enough relievers. Reds have always had good relief pitchers available so there should be plenty. 2nd Nasty boy – check.

Pick 18.4 – Randy Myers RP
3rd Nasty boy – check. Trifecta completed.

Pick 19.4 – Raisel Iglesias RP
Just grabbing the best available innings for pitchers with over 70 IPs.

Pick 20.4 – Nick Masset RP
I was going to take Hoover… Plan 2, just grabbing the best available innings for pitcher with over 70 IPs.

Pick 21.4 – Jeff Brantley RP
Just grabbing the best available innings for pitchers with over 70 IPs. Thought for sure that Don Gullett would slip a couple of more rounds. Schwarze delivers a punch to the gut and will have to grab a lessor pitcher than anticipated. I went back and started counting Schwarze’s pitchers again, off the top of my head it seemed he had at least, twenty.

Pick 22.4 – Don Gullett, I mean Frank Pastore RP
Enough said.

Pick 23.4 – Rawly Eastwick, RP
Pick 24.4 – Jared Burton, RP
Pick 25.4 – Chris Sabo 3B, PR
Scott Rolen was my other option, but Sabo could act as a pinch runner.

Overall happy with the team. Pitching isn’t ideal, picked Riverfront with the .90 factor. Love the batting line up. Loved drafting with everyone, quickest draft that I have done in some time.
