BNL #9 Draft - Keep the line moving! Topic

Apologies for the 79 Reds not having a strikethrough - I can't do that from my phone and I should have remembered to come back to it from a real computer.

My round 4 pick is the 1979 Houston Astros.

1979 NL West is the first full division to come off the board.

Once your division has picked round 5, no need to wait for the last r4 pick to throw dagger 1.

Draft order isn't relevant for daggers - instead the order becomes:
1. PIck your r4 team
2. 1st dagger is thrown (against both a stadium and all versions of ANY one player)
3. Offer one of your 4 teams to the player who throws dagger #2
4. 2nd dagger is thrown (against all versions of ANY one player who is on the team you offered)
5. Build and submit a final roster within parameters (80m, 10x P, 5x OF/Util, 2x each C 1B 2B 3B SS) as measured by PRIMARY position - but players can start/play at any posiiton where they have a WIS fielding rating.
6. Receive league code backchannel after your roster is approved.

I am still waiting for any volunteers or suggestions on the BeAll team.

1969 Yankees
Gut punch there. Just did a hour or so of research to make my decision for the same team! So let me go to Plan B.

I wouldn't have minded the pitching upgrades from that team at all, but I needed more offense in a bigger way.

1959 Milwaukee Braves for my last team

Missed opportunity to give midknight until 12 am to screw vilefileman. oh well. He has until 10 Central/11 EST. Great job so far. We are rolling. Like the Commish said, let's keep the line moving!
Let's see what happens this time around.

I live on the east coast but visiting family in SoCal, so my mind starts in EDT, then shifts to PDT and then with the help of my fingers and toes I think I can follow CDT. Barely.

I am going to go with the 1979 St Louis Cardinals for my 4th round pick.

Let the butchery begin

dcpeterso’s Bostonian ExPadres are confounding dagger targets.

At most positions, the “top” options are statistically similar and the “frugal” ones are comparably cheap . That’s particularly true with OF/SP/RP.

It isn’t difficult to stay under 80m with the best builds. Even losing the discount 3B adds a mere million to payroll, and I think you can adjust.

I don’t usually prioritize the “6 per team” problem with dagger #1, but when most of the players are equal, you must expend your Expos carefully.

This is particularly true at 2nd base, when the gap between starters is a bit more stark than at other positions, and the only alternative to a platoon is a mid-quality Expo.

Say regards to (Pete) Runnels, the best slugger on a weak Red Sox team. Your full time Expo alternative can field, but batted .238.

The two pitchers’ parks are nearly equal. While it would be nefarious to nuke the “neutral” park, I will instead hijack the hitters park.

Farewell Fenway!

I want to welcome 3dayrotation, who is formally finishing the draft by taking over the BeAll team.

There may be a short pause tomorrow if necessary.

eman7400, you've got quite a collection of Reds going there, the 1939, 1949 and 1959 versions. Only the 1929 Tigers keep you from a Red sweep. Let's take a look at some dagger options ...

Catcher: A handful of similar enough guys here and many ways to combine them. I can't hurt you here.
1B: This gets interesting. Whitey Lockman is your only cheap option, a 299K player. Otherwise it's big bats in Frank Robinson, Dale Alexander, and Frank McCormick, along with a shockingly impotent Ted Kluszewski with only 8 HR. Now Robinson has ratings in the OF, though his range is quite poor, but you could take him as a second 1B and play him out there if I dagger Lockman. This also ensures you spend a lot of money at 1B. A strong option.
2B: The Mechanical Man gives you a great offensive option here, and Lenny Frey brings a solid bat and an outstanding glove. Neither is too cheap, but there's no reason to take one of them away from you. You've got choices.
3B: Here's another situation with limited players on your list, just 5 of them again. You'll have to spend at least $1.4M on your backup, but with another $1.7M option, there's no reason to dagger either of them. And the three other guys are really similar, so I can't see how a dagger really hurts.
SS: The Tigers give you a 520K player in the fabulously named Yats Wuestling as well as a $1.2M option. So I could force you to spend an extra 700K if I take Yats off the table. It even comes with a perfect line, "Yat's All, Folks." Otherwise, you've got a couple ways you could go here and none of the remaining guys strike me as a great dagger.
OF: You have plenty of ways to configure a solid outfield, so I don't see a dagger that causes you too much pain.
SP: By far your best option is $11.8M Bucky Walters, with 336 IP at 2.47 ERC#. In fact you have only 4 possible pitchers with ERC# under 3.43, and that's not so ideal. Bucky's gonna cost you something on offense to roster, but unless you really want to go into the season with a marginal staff you kinda have to get him on there. He's got to be a dagger option, even if it could just lead you to go all-in on offense. The Tigers only have one pitcher remotely good in George Uhle, so he's an interesting dagger possibility, too.
RP: With 161 innings, Junior Thompson hardly looks like a reliever. But with under 4 IP/G, that's what he really needs to be unless he's in a tandem. But you hardly have any good tandem candidates, nor anyone else who looks useful in the bullpen. You'd be hard-pressed to replace him out there. So he's a candidate, too.

Verdict: I've tried building your roster taking away some of these guys, and nothing totally handcuffs you or forces you to waste a ton of cash. So I'm going to go with the old standby of daggering the best pitcher on your roster. Say goodbye to Bucky Walters. It gives you a lot of ways to bolster the offense without paying his salary, but you also are going to have a much weaker pitching staff without him. I could see some scenarios where you weren't planning to use him and maybe I'm not hurting you at all. But it feels like the right move.

Ballpark: This is an interesting scenario, because you have only two parks to pick from and I basically get to decide which one you use. Navin Stadium has +2 for homers and depresses doubles. Crosley is just +1 for homers and slightly favors pitchers. Well, you don't have many guys at all who can hit homers and quite a few who hit doubles. Plus, your pitching staff isn't going to be very good. So let's put them in Navin, which doesn't help your hitters and hurts your pitchers. Dagger goes to Crosley Field.
