Flyers 6....UGH!! Topic

Got $11 mil under the new $64.3 cap. Need to sign Leino and Simmonds for probably $3 mil each. Voracek at $2.5. SOD and Powe for $1 mil each.

Rumor is they are looking at Joell Ward or Brad Richards now.
I heard a rumor that they were looking at Stamkos, too
I would kiss Homer if he pulled that off.

I would do more than that!  ha!
Dirty wiggy!

I still think we gave you too much for Carter.

moy, as a Flyers fan how do you feel about all this? I know if it were the Hawks, I wouldn't like the Bryz deal one bit.
I like it. Worse case with Bryz is we waive him at some point and stick him in the minors or loan him to Russia. He only cost us a 3rd and clackson.

I love what we got for Richie. Schenn is a similar player (#5 overall pick) as Richie and many consider him the best player right now outside the NHL. Simmonds is a physical upgrade on the wing, which we needed.... and he also has upside. We also got a 2nd round pick in 2012 from the Kings.

Jeff Carter returned us another big winger in Voracek (#7 overall pick) with again, great upside. We also picked up the #8 overall pick and a 3rd round pick in the draft tomorrow.

Briere gets the "C" .... maybe Pronger. There was talk Richie could lose it in the off season.

We cleared up enough cap to bring back Leino.... and to resign jvr next season. Also moved two players with 10 year NMCs before they both kicked in. I think that makes the team more flexible in the long run. Haven't seen a nmc for bryz yet but I wouldn't be surprised if its there.

I don't think the flyers are done yet. They will either move the 8 for a player now or package to move up in the draft.
Overall.... we beefed up the wings which was needed. Lost 2 scorers but still have scoring. Solidified goaltending. The only thing remaining is depht on def in case pronger or timonen go down.... or if carle goes fa next season.

What do you think?

Btw - bryz is a riot.... click on the interview link I posted in this thread yesterday. I think (assuming he plays better than the last 30 years of goaltending in Philly) I'm gonna like this guy.... a lot.

I like the bryz signing and the Carter trade for the flyers. But Richards makes no sense to me... Anything to the rumors he was a problem in the dressing room?
I think Richie is going to light it up and enjoy a long career in LA.  He is a perfect fit there. I'll miss him.  I have heard 'rumors' he and Lavy didn't always see eye to eye.   The emergence of Giroux made it possible - so says Homer.

Carter has been traded to his own partyless hell... The columbus nightlife will really cramp his style. I'll miss Carter more than Richie... too many times the flyers try to get cute and pass but don't shoot - at least with Carter on the ice the puck was never longing to be shot on goal. Carter has been getting better defensively and once he plays to his 6'3" frame he will be unstoppable.... that said - he has had a few off seasons from his career high 46 goal, 84 point career best.  Have we seen the best of him?

I think Simmonds will be one of those players Philly loves, a fan favorite - this guy plays a blue collar, hussle, hit the snot outta the opponent type hockey. Despite his poor scoring numbers,  he is a strong skater.

genghis can probably fill me in on voracek.  I know little about him other than he has a ton of upside but hasn't found his stride in a few seasons.

Schenn looks to be a stud... and NHL ready this season.  I doubt it but reading that schenn could go with the #8 pick and versteeg for Stamkos. Again, doubt it.... but more moves will definitely go down.  WOW!  just WOW!

What did Richards do...or, not do...that made everyone so eager to trade him?

Apparently Carter and Richards enjoy the night life?  Who wouldn't???

Let's think about this for a minute?.......Give a young (good looking)  guy millions of dollars and then tell him NOT TO GO OUT and enjoy it????  YA RIGHT???

Any team in the NHL could build a team around Carter and Richards..........But I give the Flyers credit for having the nards to make these deals which could land the CUP in Philly.......Or get the entire management staff CANNED!!

Today's deal's are as BOOM OR BUST that I have seen in years........I like the Flyers, and I like the moves, GOOD DEFENCE win's cups, and I like the Flyers D.

Time will tell..........but the goalie move???????  Shades of the Luongo deal..........YUCK!!!

Still shocked. Great deals, but I never saw it coming. Now the question is what happens with Boosh/Bob. I'm kinda ****** though cause I just got a Carter jersey after i thought they wouldn't trade him. I loved that comment that byrzgalov made about the fans probable reaction to the coyotes losing game 7 of the finals Oh and I'm calling it with Pronger at captain. I know that there were rumours about how Pronger wanted the captaincy early in the season last year.

And while we've been caught up in the talk about the trades, we can't forget about Laperierre winning the Masterton Award.

At this point I hope they trade Bob. He and Crawford had similar #s - the difference was Crawford was making HUGE saves and carrying the Hawks for long stretches.... Bob would let in a lot of softies and after the first month didn't seem to play clutch much. I don't think he is the goalie of the future and I do think he is at his all-time high trade value right now. Hopefully they re-sign Boosh. He's just a fave of mine (as a back up goalie) - the guy knows his role and he's good at it for under $1 million.

Pronger seems to be the frontrunner for the C.

I thought about getting a Carter jersey a couple years ago.... that sucks. If its any consolation --- my pronger jersey is devoid a "C" ;)

And congrats to Lappy!!!!

He is awesome and loves Philly. Not many players would have got back on the ice after taking 2 off the face... and then still throw a body infront of the puck.

I was just thinking it would be nice to bring back Gags.... now that we have the $ and all.

What do you think?
Well, after considering the moves for a while now, I'll start with the trades.

I think what made both Carter and Richards expendable was the emergence of Giroux and JVR. I think both guys will be counted on as top 6 producers next season, with Giroux playing center full time, and both will be cornerstones at forward for the next 5-6 years at least. They're also young enough that guys like Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, Voracek, whoever they pick 8th (assuming they keep it I think it might be Sean Couturier) and other young building blocks have time to mature and grow with them.

They also clear away two dreaded "no-trade" contracts before they kick in, which is huge for the team's felxibility going forward. All that being said, the return they got is even more incredible considering the fact that everyone knew that, at least where Richie is concerned, there might have been some chemistry issues there.

The interesting thing about both Carter and Richards being dealt is that they both recently signed long-term deals with the expectation that they would play the majority of, if not their whole careers wioth the Flyers. They could see it as a slap in the face and we could see both guys playing out of their minds in LA and Columbus. Richards comment about not signing a long-term deal had he known there was a chance he could be traded says it all.

I really like the Kings side of this deal for right now. They're obviously looking to contend this season and with a center position that is stacked with Kopitar, Richards, Stoll and Handzus, I think they're currently positioned to contend for first in the West, especially if they bring in another top 6 forward for one of their goaltenders.

Now, the Bryzgalov deal is another story. I don't believe he's a long-term solution. It kind of reminds me of when they had a contending team in the 90s and opted to sign John Vanbiesbrouck instead of going out and getting a proven playoff performer. Bryzgalov has had very solid regular seasons, but has looked mediocre in the playoffs the last two seasons. With all the goaltending issues the Flyers have had in the last 20 years behind otherwise contending teams, I was simply surprised that they committed the dollars and years to this particular player. That said, he has the ability to give them stability in goal, but it won't take much more than 1 or 2 bad playoff games for the Flyer fan base to call for Holmgren's head. I don't think there'll be much patience after losing two of the more beloved Flyers in recent history.
6/24/2011 9:13 AM
Agree with ALL of that, andru.

I think Bryz will be better with the flyers D in front of him than he was in Phoenix.... but yeah, Flyers fans only allow for a short leash in the playoffs - myself included. It sounds like the contract is majorly front loaded at $10 mil this season to $1.75ish, 1.5ish the last 2 seasons.... even though the cap hit is $5.6 the dollars make sense based on age, and could make him tradable/demotable come the later seasons. i.e. put him in Adirondack to remove the $5.6 cap hit and pay him $1.75 mil in actual salary. But thats something to worry about in 7-9 seasons from now. A lot can happen.

Pronger getting the Captaincy will be huge too. He has no problem handling the media... Richie did.

Simmonds and Bryz have the personalities and the work ethic to be loved in Philly.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR TONIGHT!!!! Its the first draft we actually have a pick before the 3rd round in about 3 seasons.... and I hope like hell they trade up for Larsson.

6/24/2011 9:38 AM
I will say this:  it speaks to the depth of the Flyers at the forward position that they could trade away not just two top-six forwards, they traded away their very top two forwards... and the fans are okay with it, regardless of whatever personalities were involved or how much they got back.

I don't believe there's ANY other team in the NHL or even in any other sport that could do something comparable.

Then again, it also speaks to my prediction of a copycat mentality that I spoke of with a friend last week - the Bruins won a cup without a true #1 center on the roster.  Now watch a bunch of other teams try to win with that style, goaltending, D, and 12 swarming forwards.

Didn't think it would start happening right away.

At least it's better than a whole bunch of whiny diving cheap shot artists
