a couple of things...
1. the flyers lost a lot more physicality than just sod and carcillo. Richards and carter were physical players who could actually generate tons of offensive pressure. those two have not been replaced as of yet.
2. I think you may be over-valuing bob just a little. every other gm sees the same things homer did in him. everyone else saw that second half meltdown.
3. homer cleared cap space for the very simple reason that giroux, jvr and coburn will all need new deals in the next little while. he couldn't resign all those guys and still pay richie and carter while adding bryz. it just wouldn't have worked. he basically chose giroux and jvr over Richards and carter. now I understand the chemistry issues forced his hand a little, but I believe that's the main reason for the cap purge.
1. Carter was not a very physical player - maybe one day he will be with that 6'4" frame but he wasn't with the flyers. It was a continous knock on him in the Philly media. Richards' physicality will be tough to replace - that said - Schenn is bigger and many say he is a replica of Richards the way he plays. Time will tell and he'll get a shot on the 3rd line this season. I personally think the team is MORE physical now - we got much bigger on the wings which we needed - Jagr, Simmonds, Talbot, Voracek... combined with Shelley, Hartnell, JVR.... All at or above 6'2" (except Talbot). We got rid of all the small players on the wing. The biggest change is now our guys can play their natural positions... with the logjam at Center players like Carter, Briere, and Giroux were all splitting time at the wings. Both Briere and Giroux can go back to where they play best. We are still small at center but both Giroux and Briere play bigger than their size - and are physical players. As for Defense - losing our #7 guy in SOD does not impact us.... If Lilja doesn't pan out we have Syvret, Gustafsson, Walker, Marshall, and/or Bartulis to sub in.
2. Bob has a lot of value - How many 21 year old goalies can play 54 games in the NHL and do what he did.... especially considering he never played in a nhl sized rink before. Those GMs saw he got beat a few times in the end of the year, but I bet they also think he has a ton of potential with the right development. most goalies don't even break into the league, nvm 54 games, until after age 25. I personally don't think he is 'the goalie' of the future but I'm in the minority on this one.
3. There was a lot of reasons Homer cleared cap space. Locker Room, LTCs, NMCs, Friendship between Carter and Richie, signing Bryz.... Its not all one thing. That said we still have some $4.5 mil in cap space and a GM that wants to win - I expect he will do something big... probably not Stammer but I could see him try and wrestle a guy like Ladd or Semin away (especially since WASH is over the cap). Its not like he is shy about trading away 1st round draft picks ;)
