SOUTH
1 - NYu
Not since the days of Webber, Howard, and Rose has there been a more heralded group of teammates. NYU's "fab 5" of Bowman, Lewis, Bacon, Daniel, and Anderson have been together for three seasons now. After a better than expected performance last season the team is ready to make a name for themselves and bring a second championship to the Upstate. The biggest weakness for the team is the lack of depth, and Coach Polo has taken full responsibility for that. After not landing a low post threat last season that would serve as the back up this year, Coach Polo is scrambling to find a suitable juco or transer to fill the last piece to the puzzle. This team has nothing but the highest hopes, so in this reporter's opinion look for a dissapointing first round exit to cap off a great regular season.
2 - Brandeis
The conference's most consistant coach and program with field another solid team for the upcoming season. They will lose three great players, but as always they have someone to step in and take over without skipping a beat. Brandeis is always a contender for the Division title and a deep NT run and dont expect this year to be any different.
3 - Chicago
Chicago completed the greatest season in its history and capped it off with a National Title. This reporter never doubted them for one minute and sends his congratulations to the players, coach, and administration. With the title under their belts, Chicago will be looking to reload after suffing some heavy losses. They do return seven players, though, and will still be a force to recon with in the Southern Division. With the selection of talent that Coach Taz has to work with, look for Chicago to round out their lineup nicely this season and make a strong push for an NT birth. In an unrelated story, sales of magic 8 balls in the Cook County area have skyrocketed in the last few months...
4 - Washington
Last season was an up and down year for the squad, capped off with the midseason resignation of longtime coach Ucla. After leading the team to its first ever postseason birth Coach Ucla put in his resignation in the middle of conference play. Assistant coach Tlsfn steped in as interim coach and ran the team to perfection. With a couple stunning late season upsets, one of eventual national champion Chicago, Coach Tlsfn led Washington to its second strait NT birth and a showed a glimpse of their bright future. This season's team is fairly solid with the exception of the low post play. They are missing depth and if they go the route of finding a transfer that can come in and be the starting PF, this team would be favored to win the division. Either way, with Coach Tlsfn at the helm, the team will be great for years to come. On a side note, i have gotten unconfirmed reports that Coach Ucla has interviewed for the Rhodes job in the University Athletic Conference. When confronted, he confessed that he was tired of getting beat up day in and day out by the fierce competition in the UCAC, and he just wanted an easy conference schedule for once.
5 - Rochester
Rochester takes a couple big loses by losing Richard Dexter and Stephen Bader to graduation. The team will be taking its lumps, but with a solid foundation and only three upperclassmen, the team has a bright future. Coach Bnys will be looking to pick up a few key freshman this season and hopefully by next season will be breaking out of their pattern of mediocrity. During Coach Bnys' tenure the team has never been over 200 in RPI, but never better than 100.
6 - Case Western Reserve
In his first season actually getting paid, Coach Ampbyu was able to bring in a strong recruiting class. With three of them competing for Frosh of the Year honors, the future of this program is looking up again. Combine the three freshman with senior PG Steven Walko and you have four solid contributors to the team this season. The Jason Kidd-like PG will also be looking to become the first ever Upstate player to log a triple double. With another strong influx of freshman this recruiting period, the team will have a great core to work with for the next few seasons. They may struggle to win games, but will be very competative all year long.
