If I've read the last day's worth of posts correctly:

colonels19 is happy with the second round of changes.

monkee is defending the sim, joining seble in a heartfelt, tearjerking round of Kum-ba-yah.

hurley711 is a raving drunk, criticizing changes he pushed for.

I'm intrigued...the salaries are really loose so no one should have minute problems...more combinations mean a better game...interested to see how the new D and O stuff works out.

I'm hoping it won't be estimated with that same formula that gave us the O range ratings cause that would be 4 quarters for a dollar thing. As pointed out in a previous post I'm not sure how they will come up with where players from the past took their shots from, looks like more subjectivity will be involved.
We ran an analysis on actual shot range data from 82games.com that provided a formula that we applied to each player. It's a limited amount of data, but enough for our purposes.

from what I remember, those numbers said that Barkley was much more of an inside shooter, so that pretty much by itself is an improvement.

Yeah, sorry, I should have those numbers in the spreadsheet. Since I didn't really see much feedback on them I assumed they were ok.

I know that this question was asked upthread, but I'd like to ask it again: when is the update going to happen???

next week probably

Wow,

I was one of the first to download this looked at the D and said well hell looks like I'll make some changes and move on ... sad that Wilt and Rodman are gone. After reading the blogs, more like skimming over because they became so redundant and attacking one another, I do agree some of the early years NBA stats cause some problems and maybe we should try to keep all assumptions assumptions and not half assumptions for the early years and half stats for the recent years.

What I have been thinking about lately is more along the line of who cares about the changes in the sim because I joined WIS several years ago because I got my first bit of crack for free and yes I was instantly addicted. I have friends that are fantasy nuts but won't join this site because they can't get a real taste of it due to the price. I'm just saying they need a bit of crack to get them addicted. This would solve another huge problem which is leagues NOT FILLING UP. In my mind this is a huge problem. If you are eliminated from the playoffs you should get your bonus cash instantly to jump on the next league. I always play the exhibition games too but they are taking so much time to just get started so you have three or four days of lag there.

Basically what I'm saying is I haven't even downloaded the updated salaries because I don't care ... as long as leagues fill up I'm excited to pick my team and play but when you have to jump from league to league to to play with God knows how many $42 and $57mil leagues that don't fill up no one wants to play. There isn't a sim problem there is a marketing problem.

There is my two cents.

Wait, my third cent, for the umteenth time is can we get Energy Solutions Arena for the Jazz ... Please?

The 70-71 Wilt being a 50 defense makes me sad. I love that version... it doesn't feel lame using him because there are so many better offensive (moses), defensive (Olauywon) and rebounding (russell) options for a very similar price. But he does give decent/good on all of those as well as low-foul. Now his defense is 50... that makes me sad.

Got to be honest with you, though, I don't recall every seeing a single game from that year, so I can't really comment on how realistic that rating is.

Just saying - it makes me sad.

Sorry had to repost after briefly looking at the updated salaries / defense.

Defense needs to be reworked.

Looked at my man Stockton and he got shafted ... truly underrated for having more steals than any other player in history. This may be because Sim just went to 1st Team 2nd Team Defensive teams but forgot about small market guys. Lebron is 93 and has never even made a Defensive Team. Paul Millsap who isn't even a starter for the Jazz now has better defense than Stockton. Look at Bird's defensive rating for being a second team guy. There are other guys too but this is what I picked up on right away.

I guess I'm a bit confused on player effectiveness. Has Jordan been changed to 100 on PG? I sure hope not but if he played there he played PG he should be 100 PG just like Magic and Oscar playing three or four positions. I'll have to side with Rodman playing the three spot since he had to guard Bird, Malone, Magic, Jordan that all get the three spot.

I'm dissappointed...it looks like y'all didn't address the disparity in d rating between modern players and 50's/60's players. One of the nice changes has been the move towards making the 50's/60's player/seasons more useful by using more advanced stats such as adjusted fg%, reb %, usage rate, etc. However, the new D ratings exacerbate the advantage that modern players enjoy over the 50's/60's players.

I am looking forward to the new release. I think its another step in the right direction. I'd just like to see more diverse team rosters, and the more balanced the player/era's are, the more different player/seasons we will see used by owners.

Thanks!

Actually I think the D ratings are still a problem because of that disparity, I think they could still be improved, I don't like the idea of having some players rated higher just because they have D team votes available and not others, I'd like to have em all on the same level but how could that be done?

I see two possible solutions;

1- you don't count the votes at all, ie; only count 1st n 2nd teams

2- estimate who should get a D bonus based on game knowledge and/or based on players who've been on D teams in other seasons. Of course that would include some subjectivity but no more than estimated 3 pts att %, shooting range % and the D ratings itself...

Of the two solution I feel much better with the 2nd one. We have little objective numbers to back up D ratings so I think we should keep the votes in as far as we have them.

About the 2nd solution, I've always thought silly that the same player should get a 90 one season and a 35 the next one because he failed to make the D team or does not have steals or blocks to get a better grade. Let's face it, the same player can't be that good defensively and then that bad, generally a great defender is usually great or at least good for his entire career just as a shooter will be a shooter. I'm sure there might be exceptions but otherwise it's just logical. A guy who makes the D team even once in his career should get a D bonus for his rating. I even think that a player should get an additional bonus for the number of times he's been on a D team. X amount of bonus for evey 1st D team and Y amount of bonus for every 2nd D team.

One thing though I wouldn't go back in anyway to having no D ratings, that would be too one dimentional, unrealistic and render many great defensive players useless.

Seble, I think the range changes and the current defensive changes are enough to move forward now while you/we work on a better defensive system.

I can live with flawed defenses - I'm doing it now. Sure, I'd prefer more realism, but it's not a game killer to me.
8/29/2008 5:28 AM
seble, any word on the release? the delays are stopping the simleagues short right now.
8/30/2008 2:39 AM
Once again, the partial season salaries are too low. Seble, something isn't correct when the partial season salaries are always lower (when combined) than the full season salary.

I'm fighting for Stockton here and I feel it is obvious that his defense is way to low. Does anyone see any problems with Mr. Steals Stockton having such a low defensive rating?
