Some draft trivia, not using names of (and hopefully not even giving clues about) players who have not yet come up in this draft:

I have records for 10 drafts, Season 25 through the current #34.  If I say something like "first time ever" it means first time in this 10-season record.

--------------------------

12 franchise have been used all 10 seasons, and a total of 24 players have been first-five keepers ("K1") all 10 seasons.
Each of the12 franchises has at least one player who has been K1 all 10 seasons. Several franchises have 3, and several have only 1. None has 4.

Players taken in the first round in the current draft ("D1") included 3 who had been K1 in every previous draft (number in parentheses is the number of previous seasons):

Steve Carlton, Phillies (9)
Cal Ripken, Orioles (6)
Magglio Ordonez , Tigers (5)

Four other players who had previously always been K1 were passed over in the first-round of drafting.  Only one of these (Kirby Puckett, Twins) was pulled back after the first round ("K2").

Mark McGwire is our all-time champion "D1" player, taken in the first round of drafting 7 of the 10 times the Cardinals have been used (he was K1 the other 3 seasons).
The first-round draft round just completed also included a player taken for the 6th time (Kevin Millwood, Braves), tying him with Roger Clemens, Astros, and Catfish Hunter, Yankees, both of whom were K1 this time around.

Bret Boone, kept by the Mariners after the first round of drafting ("K2"), is the all-time leader in being kept at that point in the draft with 6 out of the 10 times the Mariners have been used (he's been K1 3 times and D1 once).  This season's K2's also included Bobby Abreu, Phillies, who is tied for second in K2's, with 5. The other guy who has been a K2 5 times has not come up yet.

Carl Yastrzemski has already become a "D2" for Season 34 (drafted in the second round), making him the all-time champ in this category, with 5.  He broke a tie with 3 guys who were all D1 in this draft: Nolan Ryan Astros, Carlton Fisk Red Sox, and Bobby Murcer Yankees.

Thought that was coming...tough decisions in LA, and I went with starting pitching.

Interesting stats!

With Beltre, I couldn't pass up the stats with the A/A fielding, with my need of 3B.

No doubt, he's a great pickup in the second round for you.

Page one updated.

Great stuff, sgsmith!  Interesting to see the trends in this league, that's for sure.

That's the latest that Beltre has joined a team, after 6 K1, 1 D1, and 1 K2 in previous seasons.  Before Kemp's 2011, Dodgers have often taken 3 starting pitchers in their first 5.

The last of the 3 (Carlton and Puckett were the others) to be left off the first-5 list after being there for 9 striaght seasons.  They went D1, K2, and D2 this time.

Big seasons in 2011 from Hamels and Lee led tridentric to go with a new look for the Phillies this leg.

Kemp was definitely the difference this time around.  I have no idea how he'll perform, but I'm looking forward to finding out.  If I don't keep him, I would either have kept Beltre or Brown instead.
