Topic of the day: Journalistic integrity. When did it die?

In the last couple of weeks, we have had the media report two false stories. The Jussie Smollett and the Covington Catholic story. Both turned out to be false. The major media outlets refused to take blame for the major inaccuracies in both stories. How do we revitalize journalistic integrity as this is essential to our freedoms?
It died in the late 1800s with William Randolph Hearst...perhaps earlier than that but what Hearst did is undeniable.

I'm a bit surprised that this is a topic of the day. Journalism = Propaganda is as American as baseball and apple pie.
Maybe you're right. I still think it's bad for the country.
I won't argue this point too vigorously but I think the entire premise is a little off-base.

The Constitution provides the key on this subject - Freedom of the Press prohibits the central government from owning the media (as it does in China, for instance.) That is essential to our freedom. Beyond that, the Press can do whatever the hell they want. For me, the bigger problem is that the Press, when behaving badly, is not held accountable through English Common Law torts (slander, libel, etc.) Every time they print/report one of these BS stories, they should be sued to high heaven until they capitualte.

Lawsuits are also as American as baseball and apple pie.

When you turn on Fox and then CNN and watch them side by side as I can at the gym, you would think you lived in two different countries. Should not be that way IMO.

I agree with you, Miami. I also think they have a responsibility to hold each other accountable. I in no way, shape, or form want our government involved with our media (excluding legitimate lawsuits), but I do think the press needs to be help accountable by both the American people in general and by fellow journalists.

I am able to do the same thing at the gym, and I, and others, always say "It's like they're reporting on two different stories.".
There is nothing good about trying to influence people's take on the "NEWS", if that's what it's being reported as.
"NEWS" should be 100% factual and unbiased. If it's not, it shouldn't be presented as "NEWS".

I agree 100%! Thank you.

The good news is that the Covington Catholic student is suing the Washington Post for $250M. I hope he wins every penny of it. They slandered a teenager and potentially changed his reputation forever.

That would be hilarious. That is a lot of dough. I hope he wins every penny as well.

Want a laugh? Go read historical newspaper editions. Like from the mid-late 1800's. Take the Tombstone Epitaph (for example) or any other paper of the day/time. The articles (IF you can call them that!) are by today's standards astonishing. Blatant attacks, racism, etc.

Then along came modern higher education (Journalism Colleges) who taught the ethics of "impartial reporting of the news" and the 4th Estate, etc.
Voila. For a long while, we had newspapers (even TV Networks) who (at least!) TRIED to adhere to the ethics.

Then along came talk radio, which begat Fox Network, the 1st truly and openly PARTIAL Network. A so-called "News organization" that makes no pretense about reporting the news from a particular ideological angle.
The erosion of the concept of "impartiality" and the evaporation of journalistic "ethics" just expedited and Poof, it's gone.
The loss of a free press will be the beginning of the end of "we the people"......... no 4th Estate to keep our Gov't honest means the leaders can just lie away to us anytime they please. Treat us like the 125 Million voting dummies we are.
Just like the daily tweets from the current liar!

I'm ignorant about this incident. (Don't watch TV hardly ever).

Can you please explain to me just WHAT is was the W. Post said/published about the student that would be considered "slander"?
I don't subscribe to that paper. Haven't read anything about what was written.
TY!

IF the kid wins, Trump has a couple thousand suits he should file. There has never been a living being with more lies and unfounded accusations thrown at him. He's certainly no Saint, and needs to shut his own mouth (and fingers), but so called "media" shouldn't be free to "report" any piece of total BS they think will sell issues and/or advertising. They need held accountable, or it will only get worse for all future public figures.

Great, but that's unconstitutional. Or did you miss the part in the first amendment about freedom of the press? Guess what: It's legal to lie about the President.

This **** happens to all Presidents. Trump ain't special.

85% of journalists are left leaning so the media is definitely biased. Then you have social media. In the end it is difficult to trust most sources. Similar to sports rumors the political landscape has become the same way. Now in addition to this you have a highly polarized country who sees what they want to see. I will use myself and bad luck as examples.

bad luck believes that anyone who voted for Trump is an idiot. I believe he is a total moron. We just shout over one another and don't listen PLUS we see what we want to see. I saw HRC's server issue as highly suspicious. bad luck yawned and didn't see anything there, which is mind boggling to me. bad luck sees Trump as the anti christ. I see Trump as just another arrogant CEO who has some questionable tactics but overall is not bad at running a company and or country in this case. That is mind boggling to bad luck.

Long story short people see what they want to see. I am not even saying I am right all I am saying is that when for example bad luck and I look at a picture, I see a car and he sees a horse. How on Earth can we ever get on the same page? I see that as being impossible.

85% of journalists are left leaning so the media is definitely biased.

You need to source this. Also being left or right leaning doesn't constitute more or less bias - I can be a Chiefs fan and write an unbiased story about any team. But everyone is biased. That won't change. If you are complaining that the media leans left, I would concede that a majority of major news networks lean left. That's an advantage to Republicans. Which news network has the most power? It's Fox News. They are the only one that is a political mouthpiece for the right wing. They hold more power. They control the narrative. But either way, I would argue that save for Fox News/MSN, most media is biased more towards lazy reporting than a political side.

In the end it is difficult to trust most sources

Yeah, and you are probably going to use this as an excuse to trust who agrees with you. That's silly. I am all for fact checking.

The saddest thing overall has been the buyout/corruption of newspapers and local news (mostly to the right, I might add) but that's besides the point.

Yes, everyone has biases, including journalists. But it is well established that to have journalistic integrity you must present the facts despite your bias. We need journalists with integrity as part of our preservation of freedom. Sure, they are human and will mess up from time to time, but own up to your mistakes and make strides to ensure that it doesn't happen again. If someone wants to be an op-ed writer, that is fine. But don't masquerade as a journalists while trying to push a narrative.
I agree with this completely.

Journalists at big media also NEED to do a better job of deliberation and making sure sources are accurate instead of using the same faulty sources over and over again. I guarantee that the majority of people in America care less about breaking a story, and more about giving the right story.

Again, laziness.

I mean, it's hard to change that.

Again, messing with the media is VERY unconstitutional.
