HD Losing Interest? Topic

Is there an easy way to see how many coaches in each world have been in that particular world for every season from the start?

It would be nice to track that measure from season to season to gauge interest among veterans.

johncannon, the point of the discussion doesn't center on vets who use an alias or semi-veteran users joining a world for the first time. It's about new users who last 1-2 seasons and quit because they find out it takes effort to be successful.
Watering down DIII by discouraging dynasties is a band-aid for that problem, and a generic brand one at that.

Referencing my 'Dynasty List' of the top DIII programs in Naismith:
1) In the Elite Eight, only two of the top 11 teams, and four of the top 25, are still alive.
2 In the PIT, one top 25 team is still playing in the semi-finals.
So, of the 12 teams still playing, only 5 are from long-term 'dynasty' programs.

There is no need to discourage people from building Div III dynasty programs. Anyone who stops playing HD because they don't win in their first two or three seasons probably wasn't going to play long-term regardless of success. I think it is real simple, either you enjoy the game and have the time to play it or you don't. It is not for everyone and many people are going to sign up and then not enjoy the game and stop playing.

The real issue is how does WIS increase the number of new users who try the game. Some are going to stick their head in and then hit the road, some are going to stay for a couple of beers and then some are going to get belligerent drunk and start yelling, "Where is that Plumpy guy I keep hearing about"

Naismith - World 1 DIII is actually pretty filled up. I'd be happy at over 80% filled if they could get it to work it's way up to DII and DI.

Not surprisingly, the game generates more interest during basketball season. It'd be interesting to know how many SIM teams there were in March 2006 compared to now.

From what I've seen the conferences that have coaches staying long term trying to build dynasties are also the conferences having the most fun. They build rivalries and relationships (good or bad) with the other coaches in the league and have a lot of fun. Isn't that the point of this game? To have some fun?

What do the numbers for the recent Wooden sign up look like. We had three S16 teams in our conference vacated, and none was picked up.

I only have Smith and Naismith teams. But if anyone in the other worlds would post Id be interested to see the breakdown between worlds.

mwmanley's Texas, Dallas team is #2 in DIII winning percentage. No national titles. He's been there since season 6.
ajcrawford69 had Medaille from seasons 5-20, won 317 games. No national titles.
vandydave has had W. Conn. St. since season 4. 8th in DIII winning percentage. No national titles.
Quite frankly, most new users shouldn't be able to win a national title. I would hope that learning the game is complex enough to where any schmoe can't just sign up and win one in his first or second season without a TON of homework.
dont check in that often, but just seeing that hurts. I havent been past the sweet sixteen since my last loss in the title game many seasons ago.

However, if I didnt have my DIII "dynasty" im not sure I would still be playing HD at all. I dont put in the time that I used to with gameplanning and went several days without checking in on my D1 teams last season, because its not as much fun. I will probably dump one of my D1 teams soon, just because of apathy.. I like the Nasmith world becaues of the common oppents each season and rivalries within the conference. To me this is what HD should be about...if you do it in D1 or DIII it shoudnt matter.

To dispel the myth that new players to DIII don't have an opportunity for success, take a look at the Naismith DIII playoffs going on right now. In the field of 64, here's this season's demographic:
Years experience Number of teams
One season 7
Two seasons 9
Three seasons 9
Four to five seasons 9
Six to nine seasons 11
10 to 14 seasons 9
15 to 21 seasons 9
Average: 6.8 seasons/team
39% of the teams in this year's tournament are in their third season or less, likely playing with someone else's seniors. Note that these include two #1 seeds, a #2 seed and a #3 seed. More than half of the field is in their fifth season or less.
Personally I like competition, and couldnt care less about competing with experianced coaches, it just gives you more of an opportunity to learn what works and what doesnt...also if a new coach wants to walk into a good situation they can as I did in Crum and also did in DII Tark making a lateral world...in Naismith I took over a team that has made two NT appearances in 20 seasons...and wont leave until they return...the point is that there are differant options available to all new coaches if they want to walk into a good situation, they are there and if the want to build a program those opportunities are there as well...

To your statistical chart above...as I said I dont care if 100% of the NT is filled with coached who are new or old, but your chart is not practical as it does not tell the whole story...for example you have there that 9 coaches had 15 or more year experiance and those 9 only made up whatever percentage of the field...You stats fail to include whether those nine teams eat up the top 8 seeds, whether they dominate the tournament and what percentage of teams with 15 or more years made the tournament meaning if their are only 9 teams being coached by coaches with 15 or more experiance then 100% of coaches who fall into that category would have made the NT...no offense but the chart is worthless in that it doesnt prove or disprove anything...

Bottom line is the reason people dont sign up for HD is no one knows about it...I signed up in November simply because a buddy of mine told me about it...since I have joined I have referred 7 new coaches all of who would have signed up years ago (myself included) had we heard about it...They need to advertise on fantasy sites and Im sure volume would increase tremendously as I am sure 80% or more of HD users are involved in some sort of fantasy league.

My hunch was the World 1 was had the most humans and Tark the most SIMS. Looks like IBA has a lot of SIMS too.
Thanks Seth
