If you're not managing your money, you really have nothing to complain about when you're broke.   While it may not be a good way to invest your money, putting it in a coffee can and burying it in the backyard won't leave you broke when you're 70.

Here's the problem:   People put all their eggs in one basket.  And when that basket breaks, all their eggs hit the ground.   It's hard to feel bad for someone who didn't diversify.

Although in most instances we seem to be in agreement, I have to disagree a bit here.

The stock market is historically the safest bet, and best return over the long haul.

Regardless of how diversified your portfolio was the total value was hit pretty hard.
If you invested every dime you had in the stock market, you got what you deserved.

Yep.
Step 1: Push employees towards 401Ks instead of pensions
Step 2: Gut the stock market of its value
Step 3: Blame the employees for not being savvy investors

These are the kinds of things that give birth to conspiracy theories...

Ridiculous! You are not going to eat chicken and rice every day for 10 years. I have my house at 65-66 but how much does it cost you for wood?
I eat chicken and rice four days a week now as it is....I think Mike is right, it can be done without a house payment...at least until he needed a medical procedure.  Then he's SOL.

Don't think I won't.    First, I love chicken and rice.  Second, you do what you have to do.  Third, I ate chicken and rice for extended periods before.

Already covered.

"I'm pretty sure I could do it on 6-8k per year without a house payment.   And, of course, that assumes no "emergency" bills."

Yeah, I saw that, and you are dead on with that.

I love chicken and rice also.  Our spice cabinet is huge and there's a ton of way to make it so it almost seems like you're eating something different every night.  We could eat steak every night if we wanted, but prefer to save that money for vacation.  10 pounds of chicken thighs at Costco for 10 bucks, to go with a 20 dollar, 25 pound bag of jasmine rice makes for nice cheap dinners.  Toss in a bottle of 3 dollar Sriarchia hot sauce and you're good to go!

I buy bulk tea and make my own ice tea also.  3 bucks will get you close to a months worth of tea.

Hey Mike, you as fired up about Palmer as I am?  I think he definitely wins us the division.  I think San Diego isn't that great, specially with Gates's foot issues.  This could be the year we finally make it back.  Not sure if you saw the game last week...but the Coliseum looked like the old days.  Place was off the hook.  As long as Hue can dial it down just a bit we'll be good to go.  By dialing it down, I mean kicking the 25 yard field goal in the fourth to put you up three scores instead of going for it on 4th and 1.  We almost choked that one.

Chicken and rice is good for you.  I lived on it when A) I didn't have much money B) spent an insane amount of time in the gym.    Low fat with plenty of carbs/protein.

Yeah, I think he's a legit NFL QB and that's something we've been missing since Gannon.    This week might be rough as I sure the playbook has to be dumbed down to Jamarcus Russel level but, after the off week, I think he'll be fine.     Not sure I'm on the Hue Jackson train just yet but beating the teams that should be beaten is a good start.

Looks lime CBass might miss a few weeks.

I understand the whole chicken and rice thing but tell me guys, is there any room in your budget for an occasional cigar and a bottle of good scotch? If not then I would find your life style really boring!

Not a necessity.  Which, quite frankly, is the problem with America.   If you don't have cable and a mobile phone, you must be poor and in need of assistance.

Wow! You must be a real fun guy to hang around with Mike.

Raising rabbits is another cheap food supply.  Easy to maintain, doesn't require a whole lot of space, and high turnover cause they **** like bunnies.

Oh I see, you guys are serious. Back when I was working on my MBA and every cent counted, we formed buying co-ops. You pool resources and buy in bulk. You would be amazed on how well and cheap you can eat that way. But then to those of you right of center that probably sounds like a form of socialism.

The point is that we(as a people) can get by on a lot less.    But we have to be "comfortable" so we spend way more than we HAVE to.   My beer, which is not a necessity, bill is almost the same as my grocery bill.

We don't need cable, HDTV, mobile phones, two cars, steak dinners, etc, etc, to live, we just want those things.    $500 a month with living space taken care of, is plenty to live on.

Mike's got an itchy scolding finger, and he's not afraid to use it.
