I'm daggering j-willis/midknight's team.

This a really good team with good pitching and a lineup full of sluggers top to bottom. In fact I expect at least 5 guys in a row with slugging numbers over 500.

So who to dagger. I identified four worthy targets that would hurt the team. Then I narrowed it down to two that each gave a secondary benefit.

In choice A I take one of your sluggers. I'm assuming which team you will leave open to your second dagger and by making choice A you would not be able to leave that team available for the second dagger because it would leave you open a catastrophic pick.

On the other hand choice B leaves your lineup intact but goes after your budget. The secondary benefit is the player comes from a team you may have trouble getting six players from so there's a secondary benefit there too.

I went back and forth and I really want to choose choice A but in the end I think it would be malpractice to not hit you with a $ 2.5 million cap hit since you rarely get a chance to take a shot that big. i know if I don't do it the second dagger won't get the chance.

So the dagger falls on poor Greg Mulleavy (SS) 1930 White Sox

With this team of sluggers there's no way they will be allowed to even catch a glimpe of Wrigley Field

Your team is going to be good midknight.

OK, Beernoser. Your wait is over. I have the honor of throwing your first dagger.

You started off with the very solid 1970 Red Sox, with stars like Yaz, Rico and Reggie, plus a couple Conigliaros for fun. Not a great pitching staff, but a couple guys are good enough.

You received the 1930 Browns and 1970 Senators as screw teams, and each of them offers at least a couple usable pitchers at this cap. The Senators didn't hit much, but they give you some very nice defensive options if you want them plus a slugger in Frank Howard. The Browns have a couple solid hitters, including a slightly pricey Goose Goslin. You will likely have to pick a few of the less-talented players from these rosters to meet the rules, but I don't see any tragedy here.

Your 1960 Reds wrap things up with your only two decent relief arms, your two best hitting catchers (thought it's not saying too much), a great and affordable Frank Robinson, your only cheap SS, and some talent in the OF even. Plugs a few holes pretty well.

So looking at dagger targets, I start with the pitching. Each of your teams has at least two guys who throw 180+ innings and are in a usable talent range (ERC# between 3 and 4). The only two good relief options are from the Reds, 27 innings from Marshall Bridges and 105 from Jim Brosnan. So there's some potential daggering.

Ed Bailey is clearly your best catcher, but you might have to use Browns/Senators there anyway to use their spots. Still, Bailey is someone to consider.

You have both Yaz and FRob who qualify at 1B (but also play OF) and your cheapest other guy there is $1.6M. I could dagger that guy and force you to play Yaz or FRob in the outfield ... but that's hardly a punishment. I'm sure you'll try to do it anyway.

Ski Melillo is the only 2B who can field decently, but he can't hit much. Plus he's a Brown and you need to use 6 of them. He's a candidate. You could just use Mike Andrews, your best hitter but a stiff glove, though.

You have a lot of 3B, including a lot of cheap options, with varying options for better offense or defense. Can't hurt you here.

At SS you have two guys who can hit in Rico and Kress, one guy who can field really well in Brinkman, plus only one guy under $2M in Cardenas. Certainly daggering Cardenas is worth considering, but both Rico and Kress can also play 3B. And you could just roster a couple cheap 3B and play one there. It forces you to do it, but I don't know if that's a big enough punishment.

Outfield is rarely a great dagger target because there's enough ways to adjust. Howard has a huge bat and gets you something positive from the Senators, so that's worth considering. But you have options between him, Goslin, Yaz and FRob to fill the middle of your order. Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't find a way to make this too hard on you.

So as I look at all these choices, the one that stands out is your bullpen. It's not worth daggering the studly 27-inning Bridges, but the 105 innings from Jim Brosnan (2.08 ERC#) are the only thing you're looking at to bridge between very average SP and Bridges to close. Without him, late innings become much more volatile.

Let's dagger Jim Brosnan of the 1960 Reds.

As for ballparks, well since your pitching won't be any great shakes let's take away the only park that favors pitching, RFK Stadium.

HERE IS A LONG LIST OF ALL STADIUMS WIS USES. I had to go back to another league I run to find it because the short list that comes up under normal "open leagues" does not contain the field used by the Phillies from 53-70.

jbar8888.....sorry dude, the above post was because I couldn't find the Phillies home ballpark for your 70 team when weeding.

Turns out I am glad I did. You have a decent amount of power available to you and I couldn't screw your team much because of multiple options at every position. So I took the one power park out of your sheath.

Dagger goes to Connie Mack Stadium Philadelphia Phillies 1970 team.

As for your daggered players I faced the same delima. There was enough talent at every position to render daggers impotent. So I thought, maybe ss. Your MVP1960 Groat was a possibility but then you would just pivot to Aparicio....no real challenge there if Groat was wet-worked. So I had to adjust my blow to your pitching. That got me down to two World Champions and I chose the lesser known of the two. My dagger to your staff is 1960 Pirate Bob Friend.

vilefileman has managed to set himself up with decent starting pitching by picking the '70 Angels and '60 Cards. Even his two other teams offer some pitching possibilities. Finding some decent offense might be a lot harder - there are only a few quality (and expensive) outfielders and infielders.
There are cheap back-ups available at every position and I don't think that eliminating one of them will hurt you much.
I considered daggering your best option at SS (Fregosi) from the '70 Angels. A more effective dagger, however, will take away your only decent hitter from those lowly '70 Expos - and make it even harder to find six of them for your roster.
The dagger goes to Expo fan favorite Rusty Staub.
I'll also take away one of your pitching-friendly ballparks - Candlestick Park

Time to dagger our new neighbor BullMoose!
Looking at your hitters, you have no one over 5.9 million with 1b Dolph Camilli but that also happens to be your deepest position. Daggering him will just allow you to take more of that great 40 Dodgers staff. Your other staffs don't offer much help but there is one guy who stands out. So say bye to Ewell Blackwell of the 50 Reds.
Your ballparks all play similarly with park effects between 0.99 and 1.02. Crosley offers a 0.99 effect and friendlier homer numbers. Don't want to help both pitching and power numbers so Crosley Field id daggered.

Redcped,

Some people benefit from the help of others. They might be gifted weak teams like the Bees or Pirates, but even those teams had great players at C, 1B, 3B or OF, and plenty of cheap options. Other people help themselves to great teams like the White Sox & Yankees, benefitting from tons of great SP and great sluggers at most positions.

Other people benefit from the misfortune of others. Imagine it is 1935, and you are trying to make a name for yourself in baseball. Wouldn't it be helpful if a line drive off hit someone else's head and then fell straight into your glove to set up a triple play? Wait for the triple play at the bottom of this.

Three years later, a "sickening" collision between Joe DiMaggio and rookie Joe Gordon sends both to the hospital with concussions. The same smug bench warmer who lucked into a triple play takes over at 2B. The Yankees win seven games and the bench warmer gets another year.

The next year he gets a World Series ring and nearly 10x times the salary of the average fan, while appearing in only six games. The year later, his improved production (or perhaps his paltry $706,995 salary) attract the future attention of salary cap conscious GM. That's nearly 2 million cheaper than Crosetti and 5 million cheaper than his stable of solid shortstops. Even with the smug cheap benchwarmer, the best roster builds are several million over the cap.

Had this benchwarmer SS (with 2B experience) survived the dagger round, he could have had nice careers in his remaining 23 years. He might have played for the White Sox & Athletics before returning to the minors and joining the military. He might have made enough money selling liquor to underage kids at Camp Crystal Lake to move to California and open a cafe. Instead, Bill Knickerbocker will not survive the dagger round on this Friday the 13th.

Do you need a CLUE to guess "who done it" in this triple play?

Locals whisper to stay away from Nickeson field (site of the ruins on the Boston University campus) at night.
