Vikings(9-1): old Favre v. Favre-wannabe Topic

No, maybe for PR reasons they probably shouldn't, however, we don't necessarily know the whole story either.
While I agree that loyalty and respect are important, it should also go both ways.
With the information we currently have (which may not be the whole story), it's not apparent that Troy kept the team abreast of his situation and let them know whether he was going to show up for the game or not. I get that from some comments made by Childress late last week, when he said he didn't know the current situation with Troy and didn't know if he would be there on Sunday.
I understand Troy's situation and can sympathize with his feelings. However, I also understand the Vikings' side of the situation, and can take that into account as well. Unfortunately, it was leaked to the local media, and if you know anything about the Twin Cities media, they jump on little negative items in stories like Drudge does on about Hillary not tipping an Iowa waitress. They don't get the whole story. That's partially why Denny Green refused to talk to the local media for the last 7 years that he was the Vikings coach.

That was a real low-class move by ViQueen management. Shame on them for putting themselves above an employee's family emergency. I agree with malone on the point that they need to avoid the bad press after the past few years.

The Vikings changed there mind and gave Troy his cheque. Now he turned around and is giving it to charity. Vikes should pony up and give the same amount and I will forgive them.

What a class guy Troy is! That is not a big paycheck by NFL standards and he could use that money, but the fact that he gave up the money to charity speaks volumes of the kind of guy he is....that is REAL class.

It was a nice move by Williamson, but it was also the right move, because he didn't deserve the paycheck.
Here's the most important quote from the article at startribune.com.
"Like most teams, the Vikings do not offer players extended bereavement leave; indeed, NFL players do not typically miss games for personal reasons."
He was gone for 9 days, and truly deserved to be docked a paycheck. However, due to reckless reporting by the media, this story became much bigger than it should have been.

Keep defending a classless move.

All this commotion about a complete nonfactor.

Minnesota WR="=not" worth ANY conversation obviously.

The whole team is looking like dogshit vs. the Packers.

How can you have so little of a passing game being an NFL team?

Yeah, that was dick. I didn't need the media to make it "bigger than it should have been" because I have half a brain.

Evaluate things on a case by case basis. If someone takes nine days off for a distant cousin passing and all they do is attend the funeral on a Tuesday night...maybe there's something wrong. If someone takes nine days off and has to fly in relatives serving overseas, plan the funeral, pay for it, and basically do everything...and this is well seen/documented...give him a break.

Troy Smith?

Ty Detmer?

AJ Feeley?

Tim Couch?

Bueller?

ANYONE?

Just stop making me watch Brooks Bollinger.

Smith is on the Ravens if I am correct. We better draft a QB next season in the first or I will be ******.

Unfortunately, I'm trying to explain that it is as cut and dry as you seem to think it is. He didn't have to do everything himself. There are people that could have helped him if his family him in charge.

I never said I didn't feel for him in his situation, but both sides, both the Vikings and Troy handled the situation poorly. You can't hold the Vikings solely responsible, because they were following the rules that most teams generally follow.

No one, not anyone that I know of in his same situation of taking 9 days off would get a paycheck, so he's not any different. Most companies only give 3 days bereavement leave...he took 9. Should he get special treatment just because he had to handle everything himself? No. He should be treated exactly the same as everyone is who has family members die and go on bereavement leave. Class has nothing to do with it. If my mother was to die, and I had to take 9 days off, would I get paid for all 9? No. I'd get 3 days off and then the rest is unpaid. That's generally the way it is for everyone.

Brooks > Tim Couch

How did he handle it poorly? Flying in relatives in the armed forces? Planning a funeral? How do you know he didn't have to do everything himself?

And what, the media can't report what goes on now? Isn't that their job? There wasn't a spin on the story. None of us would know **** without the media.

He handled it poorly by not keeping the team informed of his whereabouts and when he would be returning. And if it was that big of a job, then he needs to bring in people to help him, whether that's hiring a travel agent, or someone else.

And it's not that the media can report what goes on, but if you know anything of the Twin Cities media, they have a history of making mountains out of molehills, spinning information given to them by the sports teams. There was spin on the story, because if you ever read the original context of the story, Troy Williamson wasn't really upset at the team withholding his paycheck. He understood why they did it. But the media took it and essentially ran with it, just to emphasize it as a "bleeding heart" story.
