ANTI-TANKING RULES Topic

yeah you know Mikey is out of ammunition when he has to refer to a thread from four years ago. We've been through this a million times and I would not change a single thing that I did that season. If for this reason you dont want to be in any leagues with me, thats fine - quite frankly I would rather not be in the same league as Mikey ever again.

And, again, the point is "How will that group of people make their judgement?"    Will it be fair?  Will they add personalities into the equation?  Did one have a bad day?  Did any of them find a bag of money?

Try as you might, once you have "judgements" being made by owners in the world, you blurr the lines between fair/unfair.
So I'm guessing that you don't believe in our legal system when it is a bench trial.

I don't think Mike is ever out of ammunition.  That would be like the energizer bunny running out of battery power.

So you're saying you're a reformed attention whore?   I guess that can happen.

By the way, I think a disinterest in winning BL games is tanking.  When you make a 52 WIN TEAM WORSE, I hope you're disinterested in winning BL games.  Because, if you're trying to win, you just plain suck at the game.

Would I want to be in a situation when 12 total strangers decide my fate?   F*ck no.   Maybe they have an extreme prejudice against handsome men with goatees.

I'd also like to point out that booting someone from a fake baseball world doesn't really compare to deciding if someone does jail time or gets the gas.

So you are saying that if you come into a team with 0 major league talent and prospects that are all still 1-2 years away, and very little salary commitment, you should sign the top 3-4 free agents and win 65 games instead of taking the money and winning the bidding on 1-2 top internationals plus invest in draft scouting and catch 3-4 big league prospects? You may recall that the very next season I went heavy on free agency, you spent many days saying I overpaid for Kevin Felsen -- so in other words if I pay big money for free agents I am an idiot and if I dont get free agents I am an idiot.

You don't have to spend big money to win 65 games.

You can spend very little money on a handful of 1 year deals and win 65.

That is today's lesson.

No, I'm saying you were very comfortable winning 49 games.  I'm saying you did nothing to improve your 52 win team from the season before.  I'm saying you were cutting payroll and putting whatever you had available on the fake field at the BL level.  I'm saying you were disinterested in winning games at the BL level.   I'm saying that's the only way to make a 52 WIN TEAM WORSE.  I'm saying that's tanking just as much as the guy playing his C at SS and throwing 0(0) pitchers.

Can I be more clear?

You may also recall that that was the first season of the "save this world" event in which everyone agreed to take a team until it got over .500 - if I had wasted all my money on a very competitive free agent makret (given all the new owners), it would have taken me 5-6 seasons to reach .500. And honestly I do not recall how involcved I was in free agency that year because it was so long ago - for all I know I did try to get free agents and lost out on the bidding - I remember very little other than how lousy my franchise was.

You are really pretending that you have no idea and I'm really not buying it.   At the end of FA, in every world I've ever been in, there are a few decent players available.  I used an alias(poiuyt) to build an 83 win team.   It consisted of players signed when FA ended, Rule 5 picks, WW claims and players I passed thru waivers(hence the name "Unwanteds").   While Foxx certainly isn't indicative of the competition level of all worlds, I would be a bit surprised if, at the time, it wasn't as competitive as ABU because we filled the world with 15 owners.

Wow, it would take you 5-6 seasons to reach .500 without spending $39M on IFAs and scooping up a #1 draft pick?

You must really suck at HBD.

9/20/2010 3:40 PM
To expound upon what deano just said, I don't think anyone who is even slightly experienced at HBD believes that you couldn't have won 60 games by simply snatching 3-4 one million dollar players after ST ended.   You'd have jacked your payroll all the way up to 38-39m and still had plenty to chase IFA.
9/20/2010 3:44 PM
Have you ever had a team you thought was good enough to win 100 that only won 85-90? Sometimes teams underperform. While I still have no clear recollection of that season, I seriously doubt that coming out of spring training I thought the team would lose more than 100. But combine a lousy team with bad luck and you have 49 wins. But I seeno need to waste any of my money on a couple crappy free agent leftovers that probably were equally as good as the players I sent out there. It all comes down to MikeyT having a definition of tanking that does not agree with most reasonable people. Tanking is intentionally losing - rebuilding is concentrating your efforts on the minor leagues, draft, and international market while doing the best you can with the big leaguers you have. It's ok if you are too dumb to know the difference. heck, I will still give you a gold star for effort - you can show it off to all your freinds on the short bus.

Again, if you're comfortable losing 113 games, spending 33m in payroll and saying "I'm doing the best with what I have without hurting the future of my team!", good for you.   But don't be all aghast when someone says "That's tanking."   You know why?  Because it is.
