Donald Trump's campaign says the real estate mogul won't be participating in Thursday night's debate in Iowa, just four days before the caucus.

That seems like a smart idea. Fox News sucks.

I hope Cruz brings out that if Trump is afraid of a blonde Fox News chick, how is he going to be when he has to deal with Putin and Kim Jong Un... etc.

Trump will counter with viewership ratings. Without Trump it will be the lowest debate viewership yet. Then he'll make a big deal of the fact he raised money for veterans instead of making money for fox news.

It's so funny watching Fox going out of their mind over this!!!

In the grand scheme of things this ploy keeps Trump in the news big time while drowning out everything else (including Bundy and the Oregon shoot out) and by not debating he doesn't give Cruz the opportunity to outshine him at the debate - remember that Donald is way up in the polls. They'll probably end up talking a lot about Trump too, even though he's not there, and the viewership will be small at the debate.

Also saying Trump is afraid of a blonde wont work. Only an idiot believes that taunt. Smart people can see he is leveraging his position of power to drive the results he wants.

Trump has more to lose in Iowa than any other candidate. If he wins...who cares, right? His polls show him as the favorite in Iowa so it won't be a surprise and it's not like Iowa guarantees anything. Santorum and Huckabee were the last two GOP candidates that won Iowa.

But if he loses? Holy ****. That means his polls are waaay over inflated and his supporters aren't showing up. Big, big problems for el trumpo.

Reagan skipped the same debate, then lost Iowa, then killed it the rest of the way to the presidency.

“POLL: Without Trump 83% Say They WILL NOT Watch GOP Debate,” Lewandowski posted on Twitter.

Fox News’s Greta Van Susteren polled her viewers on whether or not they will watch Thursday’s debate with Trump not participating.

More than 83 percent have said they will not be watching the debate.

This is true.

Trump will get more coverage by NOT doing the debate than he would if he was there.   The moderators will undoubtedly ask questions about Trump and Trump will be able to respond AFTER carefully considering his words.

I think this is a smart move.    And I still think he pulls out at some point even though my 1/31/16 prediction seems to be fading fast.

Here's one take on the behind the scenes power struggle:

"New signs emerged today at just how frantic Ailes has become to get Trump back to the table. The two men have not spoken since yesterday, sources told me. This morning, Joe Scarborough reported that Ailes called Trump's daughter Ivanka and wife, Melania, to get through to the GOP front-runner. But Trump is saying he'll only talk to Rupert Murdoch directly. In a further challenge to Ailes's power, Bill O'Reilly is scheduled to host Trump. Last night, Ailes directed Sean Hannity to cancel Trump's interview. O'Reilly's refusal to abide by a ban adds a new dynamic to the clash of egos. For O'Reilly, this is an opportunity to take back star power from Kelly. Sources say O'Reilly feels he made Kelly's career by promoting her on his show, and he's been furious that Kelly surpassed him in the ratings."

And I admire this theory:

"Perhaps Trump is playing a long-range chess game. He believes that if he is the party nominee he will have to take on the mainstream media, that is, the Liberal Media, in the general election. By taking on Fox now, he establishes a precedent for confrontations in the Fall. It is him against the Media Establishment -- anyone who questions him is "unfair." Also, by his dispute with Fox, he implies for the general election that he is not "in the pocket" of right-wing media."

My point exactly. Traditionally, Iowa doesn't mean much. But if the polls show you as a heavy favorite and you're a non-traditional candidate that everyone has been expecting to fail, losing Iowa is a problem.
