I've traveled back to my home town for a funeral this morning.  Checked into the hotel at 10:30pm last night, will be checking out at 8:30am this morning.  Should I leave a tip for housekeeping, even though housekeeping never serviced my room?  How much of a tip should I leave?

Couple of bucks for something like that.   Even to say "I didn't forget" but "You didn't really do anything for me".

Wouldn't the fact that he walked into a clean room meant they did something for him (assuming it was clean)?

In truth, the person getting the tip may have done nothing in any and all cases.    I assume they're assigned rooms or floors which they do on the days they work.  But, if someone works Sat-Wed, they're not getting the Thur morning tip.  Maybe the better policy is "F 'em.  They get paid by the hotel!!!"

Do you think he ate the "mints" in the toilet bowl?
9/23/2010 9:36 AM
I have no doubt that tec stole or ate anything that wasn't bolted down.

True story; when I was on the road a lot, my kids used to hound me when I walked in the door for any soaps/lotions/writing paper I may have pocketed from the hotel.

Should I have been more generous at Christmas and on birthdays?

Unless you lived in Ethiopia at the time, yeah.   Kids begging for free soap is not a good thing.

Since when was it etiquette to leave a tip for housekeeping?  Ive never done this.  I mean ****, its their job to clean my room, right?

I assume you leave a tip for your bartender.   It's their job to serve you beer.  Doesn't seem to be much difference.   I've always done it.  I'm 47.

I generally leave a few singles or a fiver.   I don't think I've ever stayed in the same hotel more than three consecutive nights.

How come if I preplan my funeral, I am being smart, but if I preplan the ex's funeral, somebody thinks I have a death wish for her?
9/23/2010 12:49 PM
Pre-planning funerals is creepy.  Doesn't matter who's it is.  Stop it.    I was ****** when my wife said she bought us burial plots.   It's a jinx.

are you saying you can escape the inevitability of dying?
9/23/2010 1:39 PM
Nope.   I'm saying I'm not interested in talking about or planning for  the inevitability of dying.

So you're not going to write your will before going to battle with the gators?
