You also had the advantage of rolling with just five openings... it seems many owners are jumping into whatever league has the fewest openings (which was Mantle). That's not to say Mantle isn't a very good world, for that I'll take your word...

Yes, there's an advantage to being in a world where people want to stay.

Lower turnover indicates a higher sense of satisfaction across the world. That same reasoning leads you to the conclusion that average available teams are the less "satisfying" teams to work with in any given world.

if somebody has the "I wanna play now!" thing going, of course they are going to join the world with the least openings

It's a virtuos circle for good worlds, a vicious circle for the rest.

If your world is good and worth staying in, you will have few openings, thus filling quickly to satisfy the 'let me play now' feeling.

If your world is one of the rest, you will have many openings, which will stay vacant while worlds with fewer openings will fill. And in some cases when the number of openings is large enough, people within that world jump ship to join a world with fewer openings.

A sort of 'brain drain'.

So find a world (and not necessarily a team) you like, and stay in it.

The problem of too many openings persists, obviously, because demand is far outweighed by supply. In a business that sells consumable goods, they would cut their output until supply fell enough to come closer to the actual quantity demanded. In HBD, the good (in this case being a season of HBD) that is produced is perpetual, so once a season is "consumed", another good is automatically produced to replace it (the next season), even if demand isn't there for it.

WifS has tried to help the supply situation by preventing more worlds from being created, but this doesn't actually cut supply. It simply prevents it from growing. So one of two things has to happen if WifS has a problem with there being too many openings. Either supply needs to be cut (by worlds being shut down) or either demand or quantity demanded needs to rise (which is far less likely and much more difficult to influence).

"The rest" should take steps to make themselves more marketable. The days of n00b-raping, "do what you want with your team" and destroying other teams to build your "dynasty" seems to have come to an end.

Why do worlds have to be shutdown by WifS?
12/1/2008 8:05 AM
They don't have to be. I'm fine with them staying in rollover indefinitely. I also don't mind putting in a little work to recruit owners before rollover.

But if WifS feels the number of openings is a problem, that is one way to fix the "problem".

I went thru this the other day. If people are joining certain worlds due to the high number of openings, those worlds do not affect supply.

There is no guarantee that even one owner from those worlds will join another world if said worlds close. They do not affect demand.

WifS world shutdown is pointless and potentially runs off customers.
