Definitely more difficult to find an appropriate screw team at this end of the draft. But, I think I have found one that will make life difficult, and set up the dagger round.
Bigscungili has the 43 Cardinals and the 83 Indians. I have to give props to the 83 Indians selection as that roster is near useless. About all it provided was a couple of reasonable backups.
But how do you combat the balance and flexibility that the 43 Cardinals' roster affords? Bestow a team that turns the flexibility into a problem.
Enter the 1983 Oakland A's.
Sure, this team offers a very good Rickey Henderson. But at $6.7M, can you afford him and Musial's $9.5M? The rest of your offense is flexible and balanced, but unspectacular. So, can you afford not to keep them both. What if one of them gets the dagger?
There are no other offensive additions that really help. Lansford hits .308, but plays half the time. Can't afford to keep him as a backup to Kurowski, and he can't be your primary starter. Cleveland had no backup for 3B either, so right now Lansford and his $2.78M price tag is it.
Lopes is a downgrade at 2B from Klein, but you can only keep at the most 7 Cardinals anyway so you might have to take the downgrade. With no other 2B on the A's roster, you still have to find a backup that costs less than $1M.
No help in finding a cheap backup catcher. No help at 1B where you are lacking punch.
And then there is the pitching. The A's provide several good short relievers, but no usable starters. The beauty of your Cardinals team is they have a lot of good pitchers. The problem is they only have 2 starting pitchers with 200+ innings. You only get 10 pitchers so finding enough innings to be able to use the short relievers will be a challenge, especially if the dagger goes to someone like Mort Cooper.
You'll pick your final team with the next to last pick. We'll have to see what is left to help create a roster where you don't have to ditch the best players out of need to keep pricey backups.
