Game 62: Jon Matlack allows only one run in 7.2 innings and Thurman Munson triples home the winning run in the eighth as the Riders move within a game of the division lead with a 2-1 win in the opener.
Game 63: KC's Don Wilson improves to 11-2, shutting down the Riders on three hits through seven innings. Ron Reed is not nearly as effective and the Blue Sox win 8-2.
Game 64: Milwaukee's big chance to gain ground is wasted as the Blue Sox shut down the Rider bats again, outhitting them 13-4, in a 6-2 decision.
Now sitting three games out of first, Milwaukee looks at a quick interleague set with San Francisco.

Game 65: Larry Biittner and Mike Lum both have big doubles, and Ramon Hernandez bails out Darold Knowles in the ninth as the Riders beat Frisco 6-5.
Game 66: Fred Norman is in the game a bit too long; Frisco scores four runs in the eighth to rally for a 6-4 win. Timothy Rehberg hits a two-run triple for Milwaukee.
The Riders return home to face Minnesota.

Game 67: Gene Michael hits an RBI triple in the second, and Jon Matlack makes it stand up, throwing eight shutout innings for his seventh win. Ramon Hernandez completes the shutout for his 19th save.
Game 68: Ron Reed lasts only two innings, and the Riders' lineup can do nothing against Paul Splittorff. Minnesota evens the series with a 6-0 win.
Game 69: Ted Sizemore's RBI triple sparks a five-run eighth inning as the Riders take the series with an 8-3 win. Skip Lockwood, after throwing five innings in relief the previous day, throws seven innings for the victory, his fourth.
Milwaukee heads to Cleveland next.

Game 70: A strong performance from Tommy John and another save from Ramon Hernandez highlight a series-opening 3-2 win in Cleveland. Timothy Rehberg hits another RBI triple.
Game 71: Milwaukee puts on its rally caps, scoring twice in the eighth and once in the ninth to tie the score at four. Darold Knowles works around a leadoff walk to Rico Cary in the bottom of the ninth, and Nate Colbert leads off the 10th with his 19th home run. Ramon Hernandez throws a scoreless ninth for his 21st save.
Game 72: Jon Matlack throws a complete game shutout, the first of his career, as the Riders sweep Cleveland with a 3-0 win.
We host 37-35 Detroit next.

Game 73: Nate Colbert hits two home runs and a double, but the Detroit Stars bludgeon Rider starter Ron Reed and keep the hits coming against the bullpen, winning a wild one, 10-9.
Game 74: Catfish Hunter wins his ninth game, shutting down the Riders in a 5-0 win for Detroit.
Game 75: Detroit completes a sweep of the Riders as John Strohmayer walks four batters in the 10th inning to bring home the winning run in a 2-1 nailbiter.
Milwaukee is now five games out of first and faces 36-39 Baltimore next.

Game 76: Milwaukee drops its fourth straight game, dropping the opener to Baltimore 3-2, collecting only five hits against five IronBird pitchers and wasting a decent performance from Fred Norman.
Game 77: Milwaukee has dropped five straight now, four of them by one run. There is only one run scored in this game, and it comes in the bottom of the ninth for the IronBirds off starter Jon Matlack.
Game 78: The Riders suffer their second consecutive three-game sweep, generating only eight singles off Bob Gibson in a 5-1 loss.
We return home to face 47-31 Boston before the All Star Break arrives.

Game 79: Milwaukee's offensives struggles continue; Dick Bosman walks no batters in a complete game 5-1 victory, improving his record to 8-3. Milwaukee has scored only five runs in their last six games.
Game 80: Milwaukee snaps their skid behind Tommy John, who throws seven strong innings. Nate Colbert hits a two-run homer and reaches 50 RBI for the season.
Game 81: Milwaukee ends the first half with a two-game winning streak, beating Boston 5-4 after scoring four runs in the eighth. Darold Knowles improves to 5-1 in relief of Fred Norman. Ramon Hernandez notches his 22nd save.
Milwaukee is 40-41, five games behind Kansas City in the division and 10 games out of the wild card spot.
We start the second half against 53-28 Chicago.

Nate Colbert and Ramon Hernandez represent the Riders in the 1972 All Star Game.
Game 82: The second half is off to a good start as Richie Hebner rips a bases-loaded double in the fifth to give the Riders a lead, and Ramon Hernandez works through a tough ninth inning to earn his 23rd save.
Game 83: Chicago's Reggie Cleveland handcuffs the Brewers, allowing only solo home run by Thurman Munson, and picks up his 12th win of the season as the White Sox even the series with an 8-1 win.
Game 84: Milwaukee scores a rare win against Chicago's Tom Seaver, scoring four runs in the eighth to pull out a 4-3 victory. Ted Sizemore's two-run triple gets things started.
Milwaukee faces Chicago, Houston and Atlanta in three interleague series next.

Game 85: Milwaukee scores four in the fourth, but then shuts down operations for the rest of the day. Chicago slowly works their way back to even and eventually ties it. In extra innings, the Riders are forced to go to little-used John Strohmayer, and they pay for it. The Goats score the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.
Game 86: Milwaukee wastes a rare good start by Fred Norman, managing only a solo home run by Terry Crowley, as the Goats complete a sweep with a 2-1 win. Clay Kirby strikes out 10 Rider batters.
Game 87: Bill Robinson's pinch hit two-run homer is wasted, as Dave LaRoche suffers his second blown save of the season and Houston rallies for a 5-4 win at County Stadium.
Game 88: Milwaukee drops its fourth straight one-run game to an NL team, losing 2-1 to Houston. Nate Colbert strands four runners in an 0-4 performance. Ron Reed absorbs his 10th loss.
Game 89: In a marathon game, Milwaukee's bullpen gives in first, as Atlanta scores twice in the 14th for a 3-1 win. Skip Lockwood throws seven shutout innings for Milwaukee but the Riders generate only 11 singles in the game.
Game 90: Nate Colbert hits two home runs and Tommy John throws seven shutout innings as the Riders win 8-0.
We return to PL play with a visit from Washington.

Game 91: Fred Norman walks six batters and the Commandos take advantage, winning the opener 5-3.
Game 92: Angel Mangual leads off the bottom of the 10th with a home run to give Milwaukee a 5-4 win.
Game 93: Washington has three big innings, and a frantic Rider comeback expires with men at the corners in the ninth as Washington escapes with a 9-8 win.
Cleveland is in town next.

Game 94: Skip Lockwood is near brilliant again, and Richie Hebner drives home three runs as the Riders win 6-1.
Game 95: Tommy John runs his scoreless inning streak to 15 over two starts as the Riders beat Cleveland again, 4-1.
Game 96: Nate Colbert homers and reaches 60 RBI as Fred Norman throws seven effective innings in a 5-2 finale. Milwaukee sweeps the Flames and Ramon Hernandez picks up his 26th save.
Milwaukee heads to Minneapolis to face the Moosehead next.

Game 97: Nate Colbert and Ted Ford each hit three-run homers to back Jon Matlack, who wins his 10th game in a 9-3 decision.
Game 98: Ted Ford has three hits and four RBI as the Riders win 8-2. Ron Reed improves to 6-11.
Game 99: Ted Ford hits a two-run homer and Thurman Munson drives home the lead run in the ninth; Ramon Hernandez finishes off a 3-2 win and Milwaukee has six straight victories.
Suddenly only a game behind Kansas City, we return home to host the New York Mammoths.

Game 100: Surprise, surprise.. Ted Ford is back, hitting a two-run homer that breaks a 3-3 tie in the eighth. A scoreless inning from Ramon Hernandez gives the Riders a 5-3 win. Kansas City loses and the PL West division has co-leaders.
Game 101: Nate Colbert blasts two home runs, running his total to 29 for the season, and drives home all five Milwaukee runs in a 5-4 win. Ramon Hernandez gets another save. Kansas City falls and the Riders are in sole possession of first place.
Game 102: Jon Matlack allows four in the first and the Riders are shut out for seven innings by Dock Ellis. A late rally makes things look respectable but Milwaukee is never in this 8-6 loss. Kansas City loses again, however, so the Riders remain alone in first.
We're off to the Motor City to face the 59-43 Stars.

Game 103: Milwaukee scores two runs in the ninth to tie the score at three, but strand two runners. They barely get anyone on base in extra innings, however, and Detroit eventually wins it when Ron Fairly homers off Bill Lee in the 14th inning. Luckily, Kansas City loses its fourth straight.
Game 104: Nate Colbert clubs two home runs and a double, driving home six runs, to singelhandedly deliver a victory for the Riders, 9-2 over Detroit. Skip Lockwood throws 8.2 innings for his sixth win.
Game 105: Nate Colbert hits another home run, his 32nd, and Tommy John throws a complete-game four-hitter, walking none, as the Riders take the finale 4-1.
Milwaukee hosts Baltimore next. Colbert is tied for the league lead in home runs and tied for eighth in RBI with 81.

Game 106: Baltimore gets 10 hits, but they are well-scattered by Fred Norman and Ramon Hernandez. Thurman Munson's two-run single keys a 3-1 win for the Riders, and Norman improves to 9-10. Hernandez earns his 30th save.
Game 107: Dave McNally and two relievers limit the Riders to six singles in a 2-1 win for the IronBirds. Milwaukee commits three errors, helping Baltimore score one of their runs. Jon Matlack drops to 10-9. Kansas City also loses; the Riders remain one game in front.
Game 108: Timothy Rehberg commits an error, Baltimore scores three unearned runs, and the IronBirds win the series with an 8-3 victory. Milwaukee drops back into a first place tie as Kansas City wins.
We head to Boston to face the 58-50 Stranglers.
