Wyoming's new coach, Larry Shyatt had an impressive recruiting season. He needed it, though. The  Cowboys graduated 2 players, then had 4 others transfer after Hearth Shroyer was fired.

1) He  beat Missouri for athletic 6-foot-10 center Lekan Ajayi.
2)SG  Riley Grabau, Colorado's Mr. Basketball
3) PG Derrious Gilmore ,who ranked among the assist leaders in the JUCO ranks last season.
4) Larry Nance, Jr, son of forme slam dunk champion Larry Nance

You're not kidding that we really needed it al!  Next season will be tough, but two season from now could start to see a turnaround.  There is already more buzz around the program then there has been since we upset Gonzaga in the first round and pushed Arizona to the brink back in 2002.  Interestingly, the core of that team was made up almost entirely of the recruits Shyatt brought in during his one season in Laramie.

Mike Lonegran is leaving Vermont for George Washington.  He previously coached in D.C. at DIII Catholic, who he led to the 2002 national title.

Florida A&M has hired alum Clemon Johnson as their new coach. He's spent the last 2 seasons at DII Alaska-Fairbanks.  He played at Florida A&M from  1974-78 and still holds the school rebounding record. He also played in the NBA and was on Philadelphia's 1983 NBA championship team.

That leaves 3 openings:   Alabama A&M, Maryland and Vermont

A D.C. station announced that Sean Miller would be introduced as the new coach of Maryland tomorrow.  Then, a new report said there was mutual interest but the sides hadn't met.  Finally, the Arizona A.D. tweeted that Miller was staying at Arizona and the internet rumors were false

ESPN then reported:
Maryland's  next likely target will be Butler's Brad Stevens, who is fresh off consecutive national championship game appearances. Stevens was wooed a year ago, notably by Oregon, but stayed in his native Indiana. If Stevens says no then Maryland native Mike Brey of Notre Dame and Mark Turgeon of Texas A&M are expected to be next on the list.

The "Washington Post' said that Brey is meeting with Maryland today

Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon received a contract offer from Maryland on Monday to replace Gary Williams, a source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com.

The source said Turgeon had not accepted yet. But the source said Turgeon is leaning in Maryland's direction.

Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson flew to meet with Arizona's Sean Miller on Saturday in Las Vegas but he chose to stay and received a contract extension.

Notre Dame's Mike Brey and Butler's Brad Stevens were also on the list but chose to stay put. Initial inquiries to Pitt's Jamie Dixon and Villanova's Jay Wright were also rebuffed.

Turgeon would be a quality hire to replace the retiring 66-year old Williams. Turgeon has coached the Aggies to the NCAA tournament in each of his four seasons at the school and has a potential top 25 team next season.

Turgeon, a former Kansas player under Larry Brown, also coached Wichita State to the Sweet 16.

Mark Turgeon to Maryland. It's done!!!! We wanted a bigger name or someone with local ties but he is a good coach. Hopefully he will do something Gary Williams never did, recruit his backyard.

Navy's coach, Billy Lange, has left after 7 seasons. He's returning to Villanova as an assistant, the job he had before going to Navy.

Still needing a head coach are:

Alabama A&M
Navy
Texas A&M
Vermont

From their site, Alabama A&M said they hired assistant coach Sammy D. Jackson last Thursday.

As an A&M grad I'm disappointed to see Turgeon leave but I understand why he did it.

My wish list - 1. Buzz Williams, Marquette...long shot (former A&M assistant with BGillispie) 2. Josh Pastner, Memphis...shorter shot (From Houston with AAU connections)

Probable hires, IMO - 1. Greg Marshall, Wichita State 2. Bob Marlin, UL at Lafayette

Thoughts?

I don't see much of a chance for Buzz Williams to leave Marquette for A&M.  He's currently over $2 million a year there.

Williams passed on even meeting with the people at Oklahoma and I think they were throwing around a bit more cash than A&M will.  Unless A&M also wants to bump up Mike Sherman's contract to match the basketball coaches salary.

I think A&M will end up going the route of a young head coach or top assistant (maybe even internal with Spinelli) or maybe try to stir things up and make a pitch at one of the experienced and more controversial hire like Tim Floyd or Larry Eustachy.

Their site is a bit confusing. Samuel D. Jackson is the assistant at Alabama A&M. He's leaving there to become the head coach at Ft. Valley St.   He's been at A&M for 8years and they've been without a coach since March 19.  Apparently, he's not being considered so he left for the DII school

Greg Marshall has said 'No', as has Tad Boyles of Colorado.   Buzz Williams and Josh Pastner aren't serious candidates.

Names I've seen mentioned:

Doc Sadler (Nebraska)
Johnny Jones (No. Texas)
Scott Spinelli (Texas A & M assistant)
Fran Freschilla (formerly at Manhattan, St. John's and New Mexico but he hasn't coached since 2002.)
Billy Kennedy (Murray St.)

Kennedy would be an interesting hire, since he signed a one-year extension with Murray St. yesterday.  But sources say that A&M wants to talk to him anyway. He's had 12 coaching stops in 25 years, including the head job at Centenary and SE Louisiana. He replace Mick Cronin at Murray when Cronin went to Cincinnati

Some Texas lawmakers are complaining that Rick Barnes received a pay raise this season. I wonder if any them complained in 2009 when Mack Brown became the highest paid ($5.1  million) football coach in the country

Not a coaching change, but a conference change:

Belmont University, a steady presence in the NCAA basketball tourney, is leaving the Atlantic Sun Conference and joining the Ohio Valley Conference effective in the 2012-2013.

The Ohio Valley is usually won by Murray St. or Austin Peay but, this season, Morehead St. defeated Louisville in the NCAA.

In 2010, Murray St. defeated Vanderbilt but lost to Butler 54-52 in the 2nd round.  .

Belmont has been in the NCAA basketball tournament four times in the last five years, losing in the first round each time. This year the Bruins finished 30-5 overall and lost to Wisconsin as a 13th seed. They nearly upset Duke in 2008, losing 71-70.

Basketball coach Rick Byrd said the move could improve Belmont's chances in future NCAA tourneys. OVC teams have won three straight first-round tourney games, which he said helps the reputation of the league.

Belmont officials said the Nashville school is joining the OVC by invitation and will save travel expenses in the process. Seven OVC schools are in Tennessee or Kentucky. Belmont will now have in-state foes with Tenn-Martin, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee St.  and Austin Peay. The A-Sun conference has teams as far away as Florida and South Carolina.

Hoping for an invitation to either the Ohio Valley or Horizon (Conference (home of Butler)  is Northern Kentucky Univ.  They're allowed to move to D1 on August 1st, but only if they have an invitation from an existing D1 conference.  They've been a top DII school for several years, twice making the  men's championship game and winning two women's titles.  They have a new 10,000 seat arena, the Bank of Kentucky Center.  Just 10 miles from Cincinnati, NKU would add a larger media market to either conference.

Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne's list of basketball coaching candidates appears to be down to two — Murray State's Billy Kennedy and Northern Iowa's Ben Jacobson — after former Rockets coach and current ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy apparently said no thanks on Friday.

Kennedy and Jacobson are expected to interview soon with Byrne, who might still expand his wish list, an insider said. North Texas coach Johnny Jones is still in the mix, a person familiar with the situation said, but is considered a long shot compared with Kennedy and Jacobson.

Kennedy, a former A&M assistant in the early 1990s, is said to be extremely interested in the gig, according to an A&M insider. Jacobson, 40, has spent his entire coaching career up north. He led the Panthers to the Sweet 16 in 2010 after they toppled top-ranked Kansas in the second round. That same season, Kennedy, 47, led the Racers to the second round, where they narrowly lost to eventual runner-up Butler.
