Also - me thinks there is something definitely wrong in that locker room in Chicago.  Brouwer was happy to get out and bad mouthed the team.... Campbell waived his NTC despite getting married to a Chicago chick this year.  Campoli, Frolik, and Stalberg have not re-signed.  No big time FAs even considered CHI - at least that I could determine.
I don't get the obsession with Campoli, Frolik and Stalberg.  These are guys who have proven in more than one place that they can't play in the league.  IMO Chicago was their last shot, and Chicago should rightfully be giving up on them unless they're coming in at less than 750k each.  Done.

Frolik and Campoli played pretty well for us.  Stalberg is a soft Euro.  Frolik is 23 and if you think he's "done", then you clearly are either a troll or don't know hockey or hockey players.  If Campoli and Stalberg don't return, that's okay with me as we have plenty of guys to give shots to.

I keep looking at the Hawks roster... and I can't help to notice how pathetic it is.  you guys are blind if you don't see that.  your d is worse without Campbell and Campoli.  Your forwards are worse w/o brouwer and kopecky.  You have 2 goalies with 1 season of 'combined' nhl exp.

All the good FAs are taken -  I don't know who you will sign that will make this team a playoff team, nvm a stanley cup team.   There is not a ton of high quality trade value on the team either - unless bowman trades a core player.   which, he will not.

I'm calling it now - Hawks are an 8-12 team this season.
LOL....way to troll me.  Every expert has been very impressed with what the Hawks did.

I doubt you'd have the nuts to take me up on my bet of Hawks making the playoffs this season.
$100 Hawks miss the playoffs. I'm game. The so called experts are wrong.

The hawks are worse now than they were last year and last year they were barely a playoff team.

I know I was being harsh but my point is, I've seen this move before.  You always have to turn over the bottom half of the roster, sometimes you do it by trying a bunch of cheap reclamation projects with "upside" who haven't panned out yet.  Campoli, Frolik, Stalberg.  They don't pan out and the problem is always the same, a lack of physicality or honest effort.  So the next time around you replace them with guys who you know you can at least count on to bring professionalism and effort to the rink.

I'm on your side, muddy, I just prefer the guys you signed to these.

I kinda agree..... but instead of going for cheap veteran replacements and lunatics like carcillo they should have used more of a top down approach .....

I.e. sign a 2nd line center and bump Bolland to the 3rd line..... sign a guy like Cole or leino and bump brunette to the 3rd line. Now you have a better 2nd line with the signings and a 3rd line of Brunette-Bolland-Bickell. Then the 3rd liners become 4th liners.... Stalberg-Kruger-Frolik. Now you have a team with depth.

In theory this is perfect.  Problem with this is always, the guys you want to sign to be second liners are guys other teams sign to be first liners.  Cole and Leino both got first line money.  And IMO cap hell is when you start paying your second and third line guys like first liners.

As for second line center, I guarantee you at least 20 teams would love to have a scoring second line center who doesn't cost too much.  The best one on the market who fits that description may... MAY... have been Connolly.  So that kind of thing is problematic, in itself.

And that's exactly why the hawks are sitting with $7 mil in cap space and a worse team than last season.  There were plenty of other forwards to go after - guys like Laich, Gagne, Ward, Ryder, Fleischmann, Upshall, etc.  Can't be scared to spend money... I'm not saying reckless.... but a $2 million dollar player is just that... a $775,000 player is a $775,000 player.  You get what you pay for.   As for big contracts - its not that hard to do something w/ them.  We saw Campbells get unloaded and Huets get dumped to the minors - both solutions to that problem.

$2.75 mil Montador
$2.00 mil Brunette

I never said impressive.  These are solid hard working veterans who fill out a roster.  You don't build around them, but you can give them third or fourth line minutes.

Laich got a hometown bonus to stay home.
Gagne got overpaid by a team that needed secondary scoring.
Ward got overpaid by a team that needed anyone like him.
Ryder got paid like a first liner.
Fleischmann has a medical condition.
Upshall got overpaid.

Unless the unprecedented happens, these are established veterans who will probably not score 30 goals this season.  Well, Gagne might.

I would have been surprised to see Chicago in the market for these players.  They are fine players.  But on every player you have to say at some point, not at that price with our money.
