16 x 16 Draft (v2) Topic

I'm interested to see the various performances that come from repeat players (ie: it's likely several teams will have the same versions of Ruth).

Ditto on it being my favorite. and good thought on the time limitation.

I'll see how the season goes but I also am enjoying the draft. My strategy is loose and keeps adapting to the available players and teammates each round.

Im finding the biggest problem is lack of pitching roster spots. I have many good pitching teammates, but can only use 5.

I've used my teammate selections on hitting mostly and a couple of relief pitchers

And I'm actually fine using the 13th picked Mathewson in my rotation. For this draft I've decided to try and outslug everyone else and I have a lineup that I like. Now that might not work, especially in light of almost everyone else having similar lineups of Ruth & Gehrig, etc, but we'll see.

That's the beauty of Wifs - there are a lot of different ways to win including speed, defense, slugging, pitching, etc and I've tried them all and have had both good success and disasters with them all.

I must add, this has been one of my favourite drafts ever. There is so much strategy invoved in using the limited teammate selections, the available players, the changing draft order, etc that it has been an extremely fun and frustrating experience

schwarze - thanks for running a great draft. It's been a blast. Now just keep your pitching staff out of my league!

Good point. The best seasons from the nominated pitchers tend to get selected quickly making it more likely that you'll need to use teammate pitchers. Although 1911 Mathewson (326 IPs, 1.12 whip#) just got picked in the 10th round so one can argue that there is still some quality .

I think the issue is that you're always going to have better TEAMMATE choices than DRAFTED choices... In some cases, you're going to have to go with a lesser-quality drafted player over a higher-quality teammate. So with only 5 teammate pitcher slots available, you're going to have to actually USE 3, 4 or 5 of your drafted pitchers.

I have another thought on this...

This is where higher IP pitchers come in handy. I have three guys on my staff who likely won't get used outside of mopup duty.

Let's ignore the beauty of the 16 x 16 symmetry for a moment. Another variation of this theme would be as follows...

Have two seperate and unique 12 x 12 drafts, running simultaneously. So this would essentially be a 24 team league with 24 different owners.

Everything would be the same except instead of 16 teams and 16 nominated players, you'd have 12 teams and 12 nominated players (6 hitters, 6 pitchers). You'd have 13 teammate slots giving each person alot more flexibility. You could eliminate some of that flexibility by allowing only one teammate per drafted player (one player would get 2 teammates to get up to 25 players).

This variation would be nice in a couple of ways. Players would only need 12 seasons, expanding the player pool quite a bit. The rounds would be shorter and the draft would be finished sooner.

The downside is that the emphasis of the draft is mostly on teammate selection. Assuming that each team uses 17 players (8 non-usable scrubs), the teammate usage increases from 53% (9/17) to 76% (13/17) meaning that there are fewer tough decisions to be made during the draft.

Just thinking out loud...
