taxes are a portion ..not the whole thing.
gee whiz.
You think it doesn't still make a difference?
I'm a Ph.D.-level chemist. I work for the Federal government at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the national measurement laboratory, ostensibly to provide research support for American industry. It's a job with a reasonably high societal value.
Next Wednesday is my last day. I'm going to stay at home and take care of my daughter. In the DC metro area, after taxes and childcare, the salary the federal government pays younger scientists would have left me with a take-home income of ~$10k. In order to get $25k of take-home I'd need to find somebody to pay me pretty close to $100k. That's not likely to happen in this area, and my wife's job won't allow her to move at the moment, so I'm probably not working again in the near future. It turns out that this is fine with me. I want to take care of my daughter. But even with our relatively light tax burden in this country, middle class workers can already have poor incentive to work under what are fairly standard circumstances. I don't even have multiple kids to pay for.
I suppose one could argue that thinning the workforce makes the job market more sustainable as more and more service-sector jobs are automated. But the reality is, the currently-automated jobs probably pay in a lower tax bracket, so the math is different. I don't think we're really at a point where we want to push educated workers out of the job market.
Being with your daughter is more important anyway IMO.
Cherish every moment.
In Arizona, one of the 3 or 4 largest supermarket options is Safeway. A large Corp. owned option.
We also have Wal-Mart, Albertson's, Frye's, Basha's (a State Corp.) and some other smaller options.
In my small town we have a serious employment issue. Not enough jobs by a large amount.
The unemployment rate among men has always been very high, at least for the last 25 years or so.
Many, many homes have the woman as the breadwinner, while the men do other things. Some assume the home keeper role, some find ways to keep busy hunting, fishing, guiding, etc.
Bottom line is, this area NEEDS jobs.
So, what's the latest corporate change at the grocery store?? Automated checkers!! Scan your groceries yourselves, no humans needed!!
Just F'ing Great!! Eliminate good paying checker positions and have the customers (and a computer!!) do the job.
Wal-Mart had already made this move several years ago! I refused to shop there!
NOW, they have to have gates on the self-check lane, and guards as you leave........... they check your receipt AND scan themselves one item from your grocery cart/bag to make sure the receipt matches the item. In other words, there are so many cheats, that Wal-mart has to employ someone to try and combat the dishonesty. THAT guy is lucky! He has a job, but about 25 - 30 checkers don't BECAUSE a corp. decided to replace THEM with a computer/automation.
Now, they're gonna ruin Safeway. Workers just have no value to a Corp. IF they can use a machine instead.
Corps. don't give a DAMN about your family, your community, your State, OR our Country.
That's WHY we do need a people's revolution.
We do need to say enough!!
LIVES MATTER. Color has nothing to do with it!!
STOP VOTING FOR THE TOOLS of Corporations and fatcats!!
Trump, Biden, Klobuchar, and Bloomberg are all tools for those folks.
Mayor Pete wants to be.
Bernie Sanders is not.
This year, that's maybe enough for me!
