If we added extra Round 2 spots bc of the extra entrants, the next number would be 28, if we wanted the same percentage of spots. Is there a 28 team league option?
These are the 28- and 30-team options. You can't get balanced divisions with 30 teams for some reason.
Name Games Teams/Playoffs NL AL IL? Bal?
1977-1993 162 28/4 7/7/0 7/7/0 No Yes
1994-1996 162 28/8 5/4/5 5/4/5 No Yes
1997 162 28/8 5/4/5 5/4/5 Yes Yes
1998-2000 162 30/8 5/5/6 5/4/5 Yes Yes
2001-2008 162 30/8 5/5/6 5/4/5 Yes No
Because they aren't evenly divisible by 3.

The only way to add more is to add in groups of 24. So, the next usable number would be 48. I think 48 would be a few too many.
I'll start following more closely when you get to a 72-team second round.

You could advance 32, dividing them into 16 team leagues, not that there's anything wrong with the current setup. Regardless, this needs to be set in stone prior to the tournament, otherwise you're opening a pretty big can of worms... We've entered with a pre established set of rules.

30 is divisible by 3. We would need six divisions of 5. Not an option though.

Oh. Yeah.

It SHOULD be an option though. Forcing structures based on past MLB alignments is counterproductive. It should be easy enough to allow almost any structure, within reason. Admin?? :)

I've been banging that drum with admin for a while and have been told it's on their list of updates.

I don't believe in changing the rules after the fact. If more than 24 teams are to advance it should be in the original rules.

to play devil's advocate, original rules were for 96 owners, not 120.

If my math is correct, with 96 owners, you had 24 leagues (24 WS champions) and 24 owners for the cage. With 120 owners, you have 30 leagues (30 WS champions) and So it makes sense to me to make the cage 30 teams as well

Except that there's no way to have divisions that are drawn equally, and is not what we signed up for.

For future tournaments, sure, no reason not to consider changes...

Your math is correct. I went about it the wrong way. Thinking 96 was divisible by 24 equaling 4, so with the extra 24, I added another 4.

I think the only thing that would prevent this is the uneven divisions. If there was a 5/5/5 NL 5/5/5 AL, then I don't think there's even a question.

During a few of the early years of the WIS Championship, we had only 72 teams... Still went with 24 advancing, so there is precedent of keeping it at 24.

I'm not playing, but for what it's worth, if you wanted to "do something" for teams that finish 25th thru 30th, simply award them some kind of monetary prize.
7/14/2021 10:46 AM
Which is what is being done. When Mike went to 120 teams, 25 through 36 places each get a $15 gift certificate. Never in the tournament history has that many players received prize money. I may be wrong but I don't think so. I think in the past it stopped at 26 but I am to lazy to go back and check.
