Oh well. A disappointing end to a great year. We were behind by 8 at the half and struggled to get back ahead a few times in the 2nd half. We managed to get there for the last time with 2 minutes remaining, but then Pitt went on a little run. What a shame. I really liked this team. I really think we could have won it all.

Lee did develop very well, and became a very fine role-player, as an outside shooter on my team. I think his defense must have been pretty good, too, because we had a great defensive team this season, particularly on the perimeter. He averaged double-figure scoring most of his senior year. That disappeared in the last two games, but I'm not mad at him.

#14 PG, #92 overall, ****; no promises. Hodges looks good to me, potentially as an immediate starter. He wasn't quite my first choice for the PG slot but that's only because he was a little further away and would take some extra time to develop, and can't shoot at all. I'll keep his distribution low. He should be good everywhere else.

Abraham Hodges was a great role player for my team. Really a quintessential team guy - a pass-first point guard, top-tier defender, of starting quality all-around, but who ultimately played off of the bench. He won't be going pro, but he did a wonderful job for me.

#26 SG, #139 overall, ***; no promises. I really, really like Richard Whittaker...as a PG. As an SG, I have to take issue with his perimeter rating and potential. I think everything else will really work out, but the perimeter rating, not so much. Still, he'll be fun to watch grow, and maybe it won't matter

Richard Whittaker was just a great PG. He took a little bit of time to develop, but when he did, he became an absolute force for me on offense. His rebounding was fantastic, too. I am going to miss having this player, terribly. I only wish he had agreed to that redshirt in his freshman season, because I don't think he'd be going pro early (he may not be drafted at all, due to his position). I really think the world of this kid.

#10 PF, #28 overall, ***** (and Mr. Maryland); no promises. The areas of concern: rebounding and FT shooting. Everything else will be fine but I wouldn't have put a high priority on Rumfelt. I got him without a fight, though, so I was happy enough.

Roger Rumfelt was good, not great, for the Maryland Terrapins. He saw a fair amount of PT, starting for 2 1/2 years. His FT shooting and rebounding limited him, and his athleticism was never really up to par, in the ACC. A good defender, though. We're losing a lot of good defenders.

French will be returning as a 5th year senior. There's 0 chance he'd be drafted now, and he's seeing plenty of playing time, so there's no reason for him to leave.

Thoughts:

We really had a great year, and it seemed like the team knew exactly what it was doing every game. Our team's defense was probably one of the best in the country. The only semi-weak link was Whittaker, and he really wasn't a weak link at all, with all the steals he got. Our guard play was fantastic, and definitely the cornerstone of the team. We needed Lee to produce in this last game for us to keep going, and unfortunately, he hit a bad night at a bad time.

A team full of tough role-players. It was very Gary Williams Maryland. The roles were mostly different from our 2002 championship squad, but they were well-defined and we took down a lot of very good teams over the course of the season. I wonder if we'll see any of our graduating seniors get drafted. I kind of doubt it.

We're losing three senior guards. That's going to hurt a lot. Whittaker is a huge loss. Hodges would have been adequately replaced by the PG I recruited earlier this season and Lee could've been adequately replaced by the SG (who needs some PT)...Montero is also sitting around waiting for some time on the court, though he'll never live up to his hype due to his inability to dribble properly.

Rumfelt will be somewhat missed, but not much. He was the best man for the job this season, but Jones will be able to step in and help with low-post scoring and McClure will continue to develop into a fine post presence, and I'll recruit someone else to help out down there so we shouldn't miss a beat.

Our long-term health seems okay. I'm prepared for next season, reasonably manned across the roster. Still, we're going to be seeing a significant downgrade in our guards. I expect to make the NT next year, but I don't think we'll have a championship calibre team, and that's why last night's loss stings. It'll be a while before we get back to that level.

He should turn into a high-caliber athlete and lock-down defender, and hopefully a serious threat from outside. Again, I'm not sure about his pro prospects, but he should be a good player for the team.

Traylor school early, which surprises me. It hurts somewhat, but we have Koualeski to take over, and I was planning on recruiting another SF, anyways. I mean, I guess he wasn't going to get too much better, but he also hadn't produced at all. I wouldn't have considered him one of my stars, this year. He was just a role player, and a good defender. Never lived up to his ratings. Weird.

a championship game appearance, a final four, three second-rounds, and another NT bid to go before I live up to my predecessor. If I win a championship before getting all of that, I think the argument could be made that I'd eclipse him, but oldresorter is one of the best in this game, if not the best.

We're losing 4 out of 5 starters, assuming that French comes back as a 5th year senior. My goal for next season is to have a quality group of recruits, develop well, and reach the NT. Anything less would be a disappointment, and anything more would be remarkable.

How much better would we have been with Traylor? Well, it would have helped our long-term health, considering that we've gone from a 4-4-1-3, which isn't great, to a 5-3-1-3, which is arguably worse. I guess I could consider picking up a JuCo Jr. and maybe shifting it to a 4-3-2-3. I would like to eventually get over to a 3-3-3-3...I just think that having three seniors every year would maximize success. However, that would assume that no Traylors happen, not to mention the legitimate stars who aren't seniors would have to stay for the full 4 years. I dunno. Maybe it's just a matter of planning each year independently.
