SteveIzzy has two strong teams that he drafted, and two remarkably ****** ones that he was gifted. Looking at the ’73 Cardinals, it’s kinda remarkable that they weren’t drafted in the first round by someone. They have 8 or 9 useful pitchers, so daggering one of them makes his job easier, not harder. Same story with daggering a hitter of this team… even eliminating Ted Simmons wouldn’t help because Lou Boudreau’s dual eligibility would cover the catching position. Besides… Ted is expensive at this cap.
The ’43 Indians feature more good pitchers, a strong outfield for this cap, and the aforementioned Boudreau. Again, a dagger here would be almost a blessing because it would eliminate some tough tradeoffs.
So that left the execrable ’83 Mariners and the ’43 Browns. The Mariners offered an intriguing dagger candidate with Matt Young, whose mediocre 200 innings made him the 9th or 10th best starter. They also have almost no useful hitters, aside from a bunch of cheap scrubs and potential platoon candidates. Daggering Young would only steer him towards Jim Beattie who is just as bad, but a tad cheaper. Ed VandeBerg is probably the only useful pitcher, but this just means he’d use 4 or 5 hitting scrubs.
Looking at the ’43 Browns, they have one very good player, Vern Stephens, and two not-so-good barely usable pitchers (Johnny Niggeling 160 innings and Nels Potter 180 innings, both with bad HR/9 numbers). I considered daggering Niggeling, and trying to force him to use Potter and his 64 HR/9+. When I ran some sample rosters, I encountered the same problem I had when daggering Young. Niggeling and Potter were too close in performance to make an impact.
Then I realized that Stephens had a really reasonable $/ab for this cap (less than $7K/ab), as well as positional flexibility (SS/OF), which made him the best SS, one of his three best OF, and by far, the best value. Now, if he wants productivity from SS and C, he will have to use the pricey Boudreau and Simmons, which will cripple the rest of his lineup.
I officially dagger VERN STEPHENS.
For his park, he has three hitter’s parks (Sportsman, Kingdome, and League Park). Let’s make him play in one of those.
I officially dagger BUSCH STADIUM.
