SteveIzzy has two strong teams that he drafted, and two remarkably ****** ones that he was gifted. Looking at the ’73 Cardinals, it’s kinda remarkable that they weren’t drafted in the first round by someone. They have 8 or 9 useful pitchers, so daggering one of them makes his job easier, not harder. Same story with daggering a hitter of this team… even eliminating Ted Simmons wouldn’t help because Lou Boudreau’s dual eligibility would cover the catching position. Besides… Ted is expensive at this cap.

The ’43 Indians feature more good pitchers, a strong outfield for this cap, and the aforementioned Boudreau. Again, a dagger here would be almost a blessing because it would eliminate some tough tradeoffs.

So that left the execrable ’83 Mariners and the ’43 Browns. The Mariners offered an intriguing dagger candidate with Matt Young, whose mediocre 200 innings made him the 9th or 10th best starter. They also have almost no useful hitters, aside from a bunch of cheap scrubs and potential platoon candidates. Daggering Young would only steer him towards Jim Beattie who is just as bad, but a tad cheaper. Ed VandeBerg is probably the only useful pitcher, but this just means he’d use 4 or 5 hitting scrubs.

Looking at the ’43 Browns, they have one very good player, Vern Stephens, and two not-so-good barely usable pitchers (Johnny Niggeling 160 innings and Nels Potter 180 innings, both with bad HR/9 numbers). I considered daggering Niggeling, and trying to force him to use Potter and his 64 HR/9+. When I ran some sample rosters, I encountered the same problem I had when daggering Young. Niggeling and Potter were too close in performance to make an impact.

Then I realized that Stephens had a really reasonable $/ab for this cap (less than $7K/ab), as well as positional flexibility (SS/OF), which made him the best SS, one of his three best OF, and by far, the best value. Now, if he wants productivity from SS and C, he will have to use the pricey Boudreau and Simmons, which will cripple the rest of his lineup.

I officially dagger VERN STEPHENS.

For his park, he has three hitter’s parks (Sportsman, Kingdome, and League Park). Let’s make him play in one of those.

I officially dagger BUSCH STADIUM.

moses_k, figuring out who to dagger from your team was not easy, and after a fair amount of time digging, I am not sure I made the right choice, but we'll see. Going back to your round 3 screw pick, dweezil noted a lack of good IF candidates on your roster, and handed you the 1983 Giants. You grabbed the 73 Mets with your final pick, but when I look at your 2B/SS options, I see a bunch of useless low PA guys. The few high PA players have generally awful defense. The 1 or 2 decent defensive players can't hit at all. The 1973 Mets did give you one useful player in this mess: Felix Millan. Felix ain't great, but he does give you 704PA of A/B+ defense at 2B, and his .294 AVG# is far better than anything else you have except for sub (and iron glove) Joel Youngblood from the 83 Giants. So I am daggering 1973 Felix Millan and looking forward to seeing how you cobble together an infield out of this mess.

As for stadiums, yours are pretty interchangeable, so not much to think about here. Let's kill your only park that is + for HR, so we don't give Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Darrell Evans, etc any help. Goodbye Redland Field.

Do we have a league number yet?

Chaz (with many Zs),

I've spent far too long reviewing considerations for your dagger and have got myself thoroughly confused by the many iterations of your team that I constructed but I have to make a decision so here it is: Dick Bartell (3B) - 1943 New York Giants.

There is method to my madness. Your first round pick of the 1943 Yankees is incredibly strong almost across the board (a bit weak at SS). You also have a number of cheap backups at each position. The 1943 Giants; however, are the antithesis of the Yankees with few really useable parts. One such player is Bartell who is relatively reasonably priced and offers strong Defense Ratings at both 3B & SS. You could have used one of your mandatory 6 Giant picks on him as a second 3B and then slid him over to SS and take 2 cheap SS options to save salary. With him daggered, you will need to find another useful Giant and may be required to spend almost $7M on Appling for SS or "punt" the position with a poorer hitting & fielding player like Jurges.

That's probably too much explanation but there it is.

As for Stadium, let's make those Yankees a permanent "road team" and dagger Yankee Stadium.

The victim : Contrarian23
Quick Roster Analysis : Pitching is strong and deep, with no obvious superstar to dagger. Lineup shows nothing spectacular.
Weakness identified : First base offensive production. The 63 Chisox offer a platoon of Tommy McCraw (.688 OPS) and Joe Cunningham (better, but only 252 PAs). the 33 Bosox offer another platoon of Dale Alexander (.716 OPS) and Bob Seeds (.645 OPS). The Colt .45s give you Rusty Staub (.617 OPS) and Pete Runnells (.628 OPS). Then there are the Cardinals. Cocaine Keith was traded midseason, so you only get 244 PA worth of him. He was replaced in the lineup by George Hendrick, who had a solid season for the Cards, with an OPS of .846.

What fun would it be leaving you a middle of the lineup bat at a traditionally offensive position?

George Hendrick is daggered.

Ballpark : Gotta take away the most pitcher friendly park on the list, Colt Stadium
Damn. OK, as the saying goes...back to the drawing board. Well played dweezil.

It turns out he sold us a bad batch of crotch pills, so we dagger Lamar Hoyt 1983 White Sox and for the stadium we shook our magic 8 ball and choose Comiskey Park (I) .

To make the dagger effective, we try to look at the team with and without the potential dagger victim, and look for the greatest loss of effectiveness. After playing with this for a while, we discovered that reddtrain’s team is not especially vulnerable to the dagger. So, we decided to dagger Pete Alexander. Aside from being a superstar, daggering Pete can be especially effective. After all, we remove your best pitcher. He will probably be replaced by the fourth or fifth best pitcher in your set of players.

Let’s also dagger Baltimore Memorial Stadium.

Jonstephen-I do appreciate people who sitemail me-as you did-but its my JOB so heres a go .You have some. very nice players but your backup 2B is gonna cost you at least 3.6 mil.So im going to dagger the 1943 braves Tony Cuccinello; so that you have to spend at least 2.4 mil on your backup 3B..I will also dagger Braves Field

My dagger goes to rls

He has
1) '73 Reds - strong hitting from Rose, Bench, Perez and how about Joe Morgan (a little pricey for this league at 8.216mm). mediocre pitching but a couple like Gullet and Billingham suitable for an 80mm cap
2), '33 Browns - absolutely no pitching under 1.38 WHIP. Only 2 under 900k No real hitting either and only 4 hitters under $1.5mm, 3 of which are catchers
3)..'23 Yankees - some nice pitching at this cap and ooooooh Beernoser says that rls wants to get that Bambino in there. Who am I to quash that dream.
4) '63 Braves - some nice offensive pieces like Aaron, Mathews, Torre, Some nice pitching options like Spahn and Tiefenauer closer.

Where to get best value:

Not really worth targeting Spahn or any other pitchers. Let's check other position vulnerability

Outfield - Too many to target any one. Plenty of decent options including the Sultan of Swat and Aaron. Plenty of cheap backups also
1b- 2 cheap backups on the Braves so no roster hampering effect here. Nobody stands out as a candidate and he can always play Ruth here.
3b - 2 cheap backups on the Reds, Eddie Mathews need to be considered. Borderline affordable and much better that other options.
ss - Everett Scott from the NYY is best option. has plenty of cheap partial seasons and not much pain to deliver here
2b - '73 Joe Morgan ($8.216mm), '63 Frank Bolling ($3.557mm), '23 Aaron Ward ($5.726mm) and 2 '33 Browns Ski Melillo ($4.273mm) and Lin Storti $.973mm). Hmmm.

Say goodbye to 1933 Browns Lin Storti. by ex-ing out this guy from any potential lineup could this be called exSTORTIon?? His cheapest pairing at 2b is now over $7.8mm. If Morgan makes the team the cheapest combo will be over $11.7mm

I can't figure out which stadium is the best to dagger so we will have to try to make the Babe uncomfortable and eliminate the House that Ruth Built in its inaugural season. 1923 Yankee Stadium (I) is also daggered

Sorry if I am early but I don't see how this effects anyone else and there is another storm coming today. A little gunshy about that

Calhoop's 4 squads feature many lineup options in the 2-5 mil range. Oddly, the screw teams fill in some of his weaknesses here, too. And he's got many pitching options so daggering one of those guys won't matter at all. One thing I noticed, though, is that amongst all 4 teams he only has 5 options at SS: 4 weak-hitting starters in the 2-4 mil range + 1 200k guy in Bob Heise. So let's knife '73 SS Bob Heise here and make Calhoop spend 2.5% of his budget on his second SS.

None of these teams offer much in the way of HR. Looks like he's betting on good pitching and getting guys on base. Not sure he'll want the extreme hitters park in Fenway on his arms. But Wrigley could both help his hitters and not take too much from his pitchers, so let's wipe that from the board and make him select either a pitcher's park or Fenway.

Ha! Same timing and same idea, calhoop.

DodgerDon...my notes are again at home and I am at work. I did review your teams in detail. The starting pitching was plentiful but the boys seemed to like to feed their gopher. I left them alone. Reviewing the position players there was 1 position that looked like the dagger would cut like a knife (did I just mix metaphors?). Anyway, you probably know what's coming...Dickie Thon gets the dagger. This leaves an off-year Bill Russell and the incomparable U.L. Washington to battle it out for the starting spot.

Stadium is more challenging, and I don't think the dagger here will hurt much. Goodbye Astrodome and your best chance for the pitchers to keep it in the park.

My dagger is for Beernoser -

He has the 33 Yankees - Gherig, Ruth, etc - good hitting. crappy pitching
53 Cubs - decent hitters - crappy pitching
83 Angels - weak hitters - weak pitching
83 Tigers - good hitters a one good starter and 2 decent RP.

Beer has 2 good options at C and two backup options - I could dagger one and force him to spend 1.5 on a backup
Beer has Gherig or Carew at 1B and two backup options - I could dagger one and force him to spend a mil on a backup
2B - he has Lou Whitaker as the best option and his only backup option is Rob wilfong - If I throw the dagger here he is forced to roster a 1.8 mil backup
3B - he has multiple average options
SS - here is his big problem - he has Alan Trammell as the only good option - after that he is left with either Frank Crosetti and C-/D- defense, Roy Smalley D/D+ defense or Tim Foli with good defense but no offense and few plate appearances - this could hurt
OF - he has a plethora of options here

SP - He only has two SP with a whip of 1.30 or better Zahn (1.30) and Jack Morris (1.16). Throwing the dagger here could hurt also
RP - He only has two decent RP options so this could hurt too

It is tempting to dagger Jack Morris so that he is left aceless however, I think his bad pitching will be made worse by the every day SS issue he faces so I dagger SS - Alan Trammell

Since his pitching is so crappy I don't want him having a pitchers park so I will dagger Angel Stadium

Through luck of the draw, I get to fairly return fire.

And to buck trends, I'll get ito the explosives for some deconstruction first: Ebbets Field. The first round selection of the dodgers has a lot of oomph. The best you have left is a neutral hr environment.

As for the player, you must surrender SS Jim Mason, 73 Rangers. This looked like the option to leave the largest ripple effec. For starters, your cheapest SS is now 2.7 mill, and if you want to use him as your 3B - since he's the only SS with other position eligibility - you can go ahead and do that. It's also usually awkward getting the 6 players in off your screw teams, so forcing you to dump one of the shoo-in roster spots is sure to make other hard choices necessary. So have fun.
