List of NHL defensemen I'd take over Buff today, not counting age or potential, just today...in no particular order.

Locks:
Lidstrom
Keith
Doughty
Weber
Chara
Letang
Pronger
Myers

Arguable:
Subban (possibly most dynamic dman in the league already)
Pietrangelo (most underrated offensive dman in the NHL)
Suter (underrated due to playing with Weber)
Erik Johnson (Just coming into his own after injuries slowed his progress)
Edler (Big open ice hitter with cannon for a shot)
Green (offensive dynamo when healthy)

Just my take.

Incidentally, Pavelec is keeping them in the game right now.

hey, I'd take buff on the flyers anyday.  his $5 mil is better than Kimmo's $6+.  He's got a rocket shot and he can move the puck, not to mention his size.  Get buff on a team where he doesn't have to be "THE MAN" and he'd be fine.   Plenty of $5 mil DMen play on the second pairings... Seabs included.

edit - He also scored 11 goals and 16 points on the way to a stanley cup .... and any Vancouver or Flyers fan will tell you it was Buff that beat them.
Well, at least you admit that much. I would take him on my team any day as well, but as I've always said and been criticized for saying, I wouldn't have him on my team as a core player. He's a great supporting talent, no doubt.

You're right plenty of 5 mil. dollar dmen play on 2nd pairings, but I bet the rest of them play in every situation whereas Buff does not.

I also like him alot more as a 3.5-4 million dollar forward than I do as a 5 million dollar Dman.
not sure what you mean by every situation.  take this game for instance:

EV TOI 10:29 PP TOI 02:16 SH TOI 00:42 Total TOI 13:27

He leads all Jets in Total TOI.

I also think his $5 mil is a movable contract.  He has size, skaing, and a powerful shot (as well as he provides flexibility being able to convert form DMan to Forward as needed) ... that many teams will pay for.  I don't see his contract as a problem.  Its his role with the Jets that may be being mismanaged.
Movable yes. But no GM signs a player to a 5 million deal with the intention of moving him.

The problem was never the skills with Buff, but the consitency, as he showed last year again.

Seabrook is going to kick your *** if you'd rather have Buff over him.

Also, make no mistake. The Jets signed him to be a go-to guy. That was always my problem with the contract he got. I don't see Buff as a team's go to guy just yet. He's gotta show up to more than 40 games per season to be that.

Kane is 8 for 11 on faceoffs so far.

Muddy as solid as Seabs is, he's not a game changer.

so he is still approx in the top 20.... probably somewhere near the top 5% mark for defenders in the league.  I'd put him there too.

Wow...TSN threw up an interesting fact...SOD played in the last game at the old Winnipeg Arena...I wonder whose job it is to find this stuff, lol

As for my dmen list, I did that off the top of my head moy...but I believe it's close to accurate. Oh, I'd throw a healthy Andrei Markov in there too...I almost forgot he still plays, lol
10/13/2011 10:48 PM
...and Keith Yandle...Wow I can't believe I forgot about him!

He's better than Dustin Byfuglien.  If you think different, then I'm going to have to consider blocking you.

Ok that's it...I just had to compile a proper list, lol...again in no particular order, except for Buff at the bottom...

Lidstrom
Keith
Weber
Doughty
Yandle
Markov (when healthy)
Subban
Green (when healthy)
Pietrangelo
E. Johnson
Pronger
Letang
Myers
Kronwall (when healthy)
Suter
Streit (when healthy)
Goligoski
Edler
J. Johnson
Hedman
Burns
Fowler
M. Staal
Chara
Enstrom
Byfuglien

To be clear, these are all the guys I would CONSIDER ahead of Buff...some I'd take for sure, some would require more thought.

Pavelec is having a great period btw.

Better defensively, not as productive offensively.

I'd probably throw Hedman on that list.  Love Goligoski (not that he is not a pen)
10/13/2011 10:59 PM
All 6 dmen over 15 mins per game tonight...the more the Hawks are able to do that this season, the more successful they'll be.
