Theme league ideas kicking around Topic

I'm sure it's been done, but I think it would be fun to have a league where no player could have more than 400 PA, so you are forced to platoon at every position. It would be fun to watch how well people can manage their bench.

Also, a league where every player on your team has to have the same first name. I wonder if that could be made competitive.

I'm new to the theme league world, so forgive me if these ideas are tired old standbys.

We got some great owners, and it's been a competitive league. As commissioner I tried to make sure that all the themes were playable, but I only had to ask for adjustments to a couple of them. It would be hard to fill a whole league with some of the themes, but they are great as a one off.

I'll probably try another War when this one is done.

I'll join again. I have a few ideas for single team themes Ive been kicking around.

I would like to see a league with open auction bidding, like fantasy/rostisserie baseball.

Everyone would start with a budget, let's say 100m, and then bid on players to fill out their roster. Their WIS salary would not be factored in. You'd have to figure out a way so that we were not bidding, one player at a time - that would take forever. Perhaps each day, bid on players for a specific position. The bids would be open for 24 hours on a message board, before moving onto the next position - high bid gets the guy. You could bid on multiple players of a given position, but could only win one.

It would have to be fleshed out more, but could be fun.

I really like this idea. I played 15 years of Roto Baseball and auction day was the best day of the year.

I agree the idea needs to be fleshed out, but if it gets nailed down it could be a whole new part of the SIM experience - even have its own message board.

One problem, besides the length of the draft, is the incredibly large amount of players available in the data base.

If enough people like this idea, Spotsell you should start its own Topic. Anybody else up for it?

There was a league along these lines a few years ago. Can't remember who the commish was. We used the 1992 season and had $260 to use for players and ballpark. Deadline was 10pm et each day. It took about 45 days to go through all the players. It was like crack.

I will set one up, let's see if it has any interest

I have thought some more about it and had some ideas - 12 team league (24 is to many), each owner sends into a "pot" of players 4 OF, 2 c, 2ss,2second,2,thirdbaseman and 2 under $500,000 scrub offensive players. For the pitching send into the "pot" 4-5 SP, 9 relievers.

Now we have a pot of players to bid on.

Did that make sense?

I'm waiting to hear back from Jose, but it'll happen in January..
I remember this one from a while back. I could be wrong but it seems to me SCHWARZE might have commished a league with this theme and it was a lot of fun figuring out how much of the dollar to bid on each player.

I think it would be fun to run a roto league... you would play the 162-game sim season and then create 5x5 standings out of the final team stats. the best 4 teams in each league make the playoffs.

Quote: Matching Hits

Whoever comes the closest to matching their hitters' real life AVG/OBP/SLG numbers makes the playoffs. Alternatively, you pick the AVG/OBP/SLG line you expect to put up and whoever comes closest makes the playoffs.

Love this idea!

Quote: Iron Gloves

No hitters rated at ANY position are allowed on your team. You'd have an entire defense of DHs.

We've done something like this in the past, though not as extreme. All fielders with D rated fielding. Lots and lots of errors!

Thought of trying an opposite approach to the HomeRun leagues.

SmallBall! You can only draft players with 0 homeruns and your pitchers must have a HR/9 rating of .75 or maybe even 1.00. Then similar to what crazy said about his Boo Bonds league. If your team hits a homerun it counts as a loss but taking it one step farther, if your pitcher gives up a homerun it counts as a win. A tally of HR's (+ & -) at the end of the season against your W-L record would determine playoff teams. During the season you'd be rooting for your pitchers to give up longballs while still trying to win the game.

That Bonds league sounds crazy....I would like to give something like that a try for a change.

I've been thinking of running this exact theme. It would be fun... Do you go for pitching? Or hitting?

Actually, thinking about the roto league idea... I think we have to take out RBIs since that essentially duplicates runs. Maybe we use walks to replace RBIs. As far as pitchers' categories, I think we can use the regular five categories, including both wins and saves. I realize that there's some correlation there too, but your team's success should be worth a little more. We could even add defense (fielding% and/or +/- differential) if we wanted to.

I fooled around with a Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler Tribute League. I took the names of their songs and set criteria for each title. It's at home and I'm at work so I'll have to find it and post it. There are some interesting research options.
Example:

"Daddy's Gone to Memphis": Must select a player who played for Memphis at some point in their Minor League Career.

"Money for Nothing"
"Brothers in arms"
"Walk of Life"
"All the Road Running"
"Boom Like That"
to name but a few song titles.

1. bOO YOUR OWN bARRY bONDS

Cap at around 100M. Every owner has to draft the 2001 (73 home run) Bonds. And every owner has to get him at least 664 PAs (his RL #) to qualify for the playoffs. Beyond that, there are no restrictions -- draft whomever you like.

Here's the twist. You "lose" a win for every home run Bonds hits for you. If you win 90 games and Bonds hits 50 homers, you have 40 "official" wins. This would set up some wacky scenarios. You beat your division rival in a game, but your Bonds hits 3 home runs, so you actually lose two net wins from your total, while your opponent, whose Bonds was homerless, stays at the same total.

There would also be interesting decisions to make with regards to pitching staffs. Do you want a staff with a good or bad HR/9? And against whom do you rest your Bonds -- against which teams, specific pitchers, specific parks? What about the other 7 batters you draft -- do you go for big boppers in anticipation of some crappy HR/9 staffs?

This could be cool

I have a league like this with opennings. It started in 1982 & is about to start the 1993 draft. It is a well thought out league(at least I think so). Here is a link to the ad:

Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler Tribute League

The song titles of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler have provided us a great opportunity for an interesting theme league…some research needed!
Money for Nothing-Select a player who was a bust (Richie Sexson comes to mind). A position player must have a minimum salary of __________ and an OPS+ of <90 and a pitcher with a minimum salary of ____________ and an ERA+ of < 90

Walk of Life-Select a hitter who led the league in walks

Brothers in Arms-Select at least two brothers

All the Road Running-Pick a player who led the league in SB.

The Man’s Too Strong-Pick a hitter who led the league in HR and a pitcher who led the league in Ks.

Boom Like That- Pick a hitter with and a pitcher with a HR/9 of

Sultans of Swing-choose any player with an OPS of 120+

Iron Hand-Select an IF/OF who led the league in errors. They must have at least 400 PA during the season.

Romeo and Juliet-Select any combination of players whose names make a famous pair or some other clever combination; i.e. Lewis and Clark, Folkers and Messerschmidt (famous planes), Brad Gulden and Reggie Jackson (Mustard and Hot Dog!)

Daddy’s Gone to Knoxville-Select a player who played at least one game for Knoxville/Tennessee Smokies of the Southern League 1992-present.

We Can Get Wild-Select a pitcher who led the league in walks

The Next Time I’m in Town-Select a player who has played for at least 6 different teams

The Fish and the Bird-Select two players, one of whom has a “fish” name or nickname, and one a “bird” name or nickname.
(Select a Marlin and an Oriole, Cardinal, Blue Jay) or Bass, Trout, Salmon, Fischer, Fidrych, etc.

The Last Laugh-Select a player who won an MVP or CY award after they were traded (not a free agent signing) or led the league in Avg, HR or RBI, or W or ERA.

If this is Goodbye-Take the last season of a HOFer

Shameless plug: since a couple people here and in sitemails have expressed interest in my Boo Your Own Bonds idea, I've gone ahead and started it:

B.Y.O.B.

Hope to see you there!
