Exactly. WIS also considers record vs top 10/50/100 and other factors. HD seeding actually matches up better on RPI than the NCAA.
Sure, as it should. It's not that hard to go 10-0 against medicore sims in barren conferences in WIS, and end up with a decent SoS/RPI. That would never fly in RL.

Except that those 30+ RPI schools that got the higher sees are from those barren confrences. So there ya go. Nieither has more than 3 wins vs the top 100 or 1 vs the top 50. St. Joe's on the other had beat a couple top 10's en route to their 8 RPI. Pretty obvious WIS is over valuing wins without mitigating them.

I mean kudos to Layfayette, Detroit Mercy, Gonzaga and E. Tenn St. for working with what they had, but all four combined didn't have the quality wins that St. Joe's had. No way they should have been 3 and 4 seeds period, let alone above someone with the season St. Joe's ran.

What are the records. Seeding is not only about RPI, and it shouldn't be.
I agree to a certain extent, but something has been changed recently to give more weight to record and I think it is slanted a bit too much now. All it does is favor the teams that don't schedule hard or play in weak conferences.

I don't think so, mniven. I've been pointing this out to WIS for 2-3 years. I really don't think there's been a change.

That said, people also get caught up in thinking that rpi should be followed more exactly, when it's not a great measure, and the fact is that WIS follows rpi much more closely than the real-life committee does.

What is hugely overrated is CT performance.

I also agree that you absolutely have to have some high-quality wins on your resume in order to justify a higher seeding. Some schools from mid-level conferences do and others don't, and they need to make a clear distinction between those when it comes to seeding.

To put a more fine point on the "problem" with conference tourney play having a huge impact on things, I think the root might be that that conference tourney play completely ignores the quality of the conference. And to be clear this is pure speculation on my part.

Me most getting "jobbed" by the selection committee probably took place after I was seeded #4 with the #1 RPI in a season where my conference's division ended up sending 5 of the 6 teams to the dance. I lost in the second round of the conference tourney to a team with the #37 RPI. That's not a terrible loss but it was treated as such. It's also worth noting that I was pretty bad for a #1 RPI. But you still almost never see the #1 RPI get passed over for top 3 seeding and I can't imagine if I had won my CT game I would have ended up on the 4 seeding line.

And the opposite part of this "problem" is that teams get a seeding boost for winning their conference tourney when all they were doing was going up against a bunch of Sim AI coaches.

I really don't have a problem with getting a boost/downgrade for conference tourney play since it mirrors real life. If you play in a power conference and can win the championship you should get a small boost. And if you play in a terrible conference and you stumble and lose a game to a terrible team, I have no problem seeing that team get penalized by that. But unlike real life I don't think WIS is looking at all to the quality of competition in the conference tourney.

I had 8 losses and a 22 rpi this season (very young team lol) going into the NT and we ended up with a #3 seed. We did win our conference tournament, but I think the preseason ranking of #3 had something to do with it? I thought we would've ended up with a 7 or 8 seed personally because the exact same events netted us an 8 seed a few seasons back with the exception of the preseason ranking. Formula: 22+22+21= 65/12 = 5 or 6 seed. I don't know for sure. I don't think we deserved a #3 seed this season though I'm not complaining :), but I think we've been screwed in the past so....
