OK, I'll try to explain a little more.

What you do when you make statements like "In a neutral park, I'd guess he'd have an OPS between .780 and .880 in most Worlds. A decent enough bat, though probably not quite enough for a full-time 1B" is set unrealistic expectations. You've admitted that you'd like your 1B to have an OPS that exceeds .881. So would I. So would everyone. I'd like 8-9 players to meet that standard.

But, as I pointed out, only 4 1B in MG qualify. So 28 teams are going to fall short. The OP's team might just be one of those teams that has to "settle" for a 1B whose OPS is a meager .791. Which, as you pointed out, will put him right around the middle of the pack in a MG-equivalent world.

In short, everyone can't have a superstud at every position. Offering advice that suggests one should only accept players who would be in the top 10 percent of the world is just plain silly.

Mike, you seem to be treating it as though I claimed the guy was a lock for .880. If I had, and suggested he wasn't good enough to be a full-time, you might have a point. The fact is, I didn't. I think .880 is near his ceiling, barring home games in Coors or whatever the AAA park that is similar. Most successful teams get more production (or some other bonus; D/speed/etc) from the 1B slot, unless (as I recently mentioned) they are "punting" the position somewhat in favor of a considerable upgrade somewhere else, often at a skill position.

You implied, at his(or your suggested) ceiling, that he was "probably not quite enough for a full-time 1B."

Again, we all want All-Stars are every position. But, if you can achieve that, you're probably playing in some 'tard world where you've traderaped every n00b with a pulse.

Again, I implied no such thing.

You apparently read out the "between" language and somehow took what I said as "He will hit .880, which is not good enough for full-time 1B." I think .880 would be a career-type year for a player of his ratings in a neutral park/competitive World. Again, he is consistently put up .880 and I said he shouldn't be at 1B it'd be a different story, but because I think his OPS will range from a low-end of .780 to a ceiling of .880, I'd expect most successful teams to get more production than this guy will produce.

Which part of this didn't you say?

"In a neutral park, I'd guess he'd have an OPS between .780 and .880 in most Worlds. A decent enough bat, though probably not quite enough for a full-time 1B."

Just for the hell of it, I decided to check my 1B on my 90+ win teams in MG. I play in Rochester(neutral park). I've had 6 90+ win seasons. I picked my 1B with the most starts as a few had less than 100. Since I'm a NL team, I look for a crusher to play 1B. The results:
S3(93 wins) .895
S4(98) 1.100(less than 400 AB)
S6(93) .779
S9(92) .823
S10(97) .922
S13(96) .869

So, by your standards, I somehow managed to put together three 90+ win seasons with 1B who probably weren't good enough to be full-time 1B. And, of course, this was under the old power engine. If you subtract the .030 from the OPS that most are claiming as commonplace, I had some really horrible 1B while winning games. How odd!

Moe - I'd say its time to fish or cut bait with Wells. He's 30 yrs old, out of options, and occupies a spot on the 40-man roster. Since it looks like you have a spot available on your ML bench, give him a shot. If he hits, fine. If he doesn't, DFA him and free up a spot on the 40.
