The logic for "I'll just keep the guy and get comp picks" is a bit flawed. Too often, those comp picks turn out to be a 4th rounder and a supplemental pick at #50.

Try selling that to the guy thinking that.

I'll only consider a prospect for a veteran deal later in the season, when I've determined whether I'm contending (trade away a prospect) or rebuilding (trade away a veteran/expiring deal).

I'm always hesitant to pull the trigger on these at the beginning of a year because injuries to your team or your division mates can flip a division really quickly. I prefer to have a pretty good grasp of how the division will shake out before giving up the future for a run now (and vice versa).

I'm starting to think of comp picks in much the same way that I think of DITRs.

There's no guarantee that you'll get them (particularly for overrated type A's or marginal type B's), and if you do they'll be in the 50's or greater so you're not going to be getting a star player out of them.

If you get a decent player out of them, you maybe got somewhat lucky and you should be thankful for your good fortune. But you shouldn't bet your future on them.

Trading a prospect from a position of backlogged depth to make the run at the WS is a win now trade, and winning is the idea here. I may miss the prospect five seasons from now, and my acquisition may have retired, but you just gotta go for the World Series when you get a chance.

It doesn't really matter what you believe wrt to comp picks. The guy trading the vet inevitably believes he'll get stars with the comp picks. All of them say "Yeah, but he doesn't re-sign with you, you'll get two picks!!"

And there you go. That's what people want. They believe you're going to get comp picks so they want two comp pick-worthy players in return.

I was referring more to trading prospects for vets in hopes that you get prospects to replace them in the draft. Sorry about the lack of clarity.
