Temper and makeup?

what side of the plate do each of them bat from?

I'd go A. I'd rather have the higher contact and the higher vsR. I'm guessing player A is y or a switch hitter and player B is a right handed hitter. That would make me lean towards player A even more.

IMO, the only time you take a LF or RF with the 1st or 2nd overall pick is if they are a game-changer, potential 10 time all star, which neither of these guys appear to be. I could go out and sign the 29 year old version of either one of these guys in FA without much competition.

Take the pitcher that wont sign, get the type D compensatory pick next season, increase your scouting, and hope you have some better luck.

So you're in worlds where guys with 75+ across the board can be signed with virtually no problems?

MG, about game 16, has 3 with 70+ splits still available:
6146767247

5362738167

6436727458

Coop, just under 100, has one:

3760758068

Hamilton, in the LCS, has one:

5743797056

Do any of those players compare to the two listed in the first post?

Might have been a bit of an exaggeration. With a top 2 pick, I would be hoping for a franchise player. These guys don't get me too excited.

If I had to pick though I'd go with B.

Why not roll the dice, take the pitcher who wont sign, and get the type D pick next season? I'd guess that 90% of the time you would and a better prospect than the 2 guys he has to choose from now.

I think both of those players will have outstanding BL careers if they can get in the neighborhood of their projections.

By rolling the dice, you may get better, you may get worse but you will definitely spend another three months without a future BL player.
2/22/2010 2:23 PM
It depends on the owner's situation. But taking a player who "probably won't sign" in this case, who still has top 5 talent, might be the best option. It also might not.
2/22/2010 2:34 PM
I suppose it's just a different viewpoint. I'd have no problem "rolling the dice" if I had pick 9 or 13 or something along that line. But, with the first pick, I know I'm getting BL talent, I know exactly who I'm getting. And I want talent now.
2/22/2010 2:42 PM
There's also the possibility that the clear top arm (and I'm assuming the OP is correct in his evaluation) does actually sign.

If I ever had a top pick, I'd be much more inclined to go for a top arm than a top bat, if only because (in my experience) top bats move more often than top arms.

In this case, then, I'd think that a chance at the top arm is potentially worth the 3-month delay (since even the top 3 pick next season is a guaranteed BL talent, whether a bit better, a bit worse, or nearly identical to what is available now in terms of bats).

Both are high school guys, $14M for HS scouting and $17 for advance scouting.
2/22/2010 4:08 PM
The 2B will play 2cd, but I would count on him as a future LF, unless he exceeds expectations.
2/22/2010 4:09 PM
Player A bats L, B bats R.
2/22/2010 4:11 PM
Yeah, the "team player" comment was about his makeup. Temper wise, they're pretty similar, but it looks to me like player A with the higher makeup rating has a better shot at fulfilling his potential.
