Hence my 55/125/195/280 rule in Coop. If you try to skate by with the minimum wins for a couple of seasons, you're making it hard on yourself in S4. And, as you know, a tanker plan takes about 5 seasons to get the desired result.

I just inherited a team in WIB coming off 65-97- here are the pros I inherited:

SP #1

SP #4

Starting SS

Setup A

Plus a few crappy middle relievers...the rest of my ML roster was acquired via FA or trade. And I didn't trade any players that fit into my plans now or later. 21-15 to start the season and I feel that I can hover above .500 for the rest of the season.

My only experience with tanking is as a commish trying to stop it - I would say 3 years of tanking would do it to build the basic talent pool, followed by accelerating pre season Free Agent signings to stay ahead of the win count. May take 5 years to get my draft picks to the majors but by assembling the supporting cast in years 3 to 5 I stay ahead of the commishes posse. Again easy for the commish to nail the overt tanker - much harder the "soft" tanker. Sometimes a really cunning one is going to slip by.

Ultimately it needs to be the commishes Opinion of the owners intent that drives the decision. And from where I sit payroll to prospect transfers with "I'm doing the best I can with this bad team" will seal the deal every time.

That said, this is still noteworthy.

Granted, I inherited Omar Herrera in MG, but there wasn't much else on the team and I managed to win 91, 87, and 95 over my first 3 seasons. Only 37-35 in my 4th year, but my team will be fine once my pitchers pull their heads out of their *****.

My only sub .500 HBD team ever was 15-80 when I inherited it midseason- if you pay attention to FA bargains and undervalued players on the trade market while utilizing all 25 roster spots, it shouldn't be a challenge to win half of your games.

I think most people feel that they can win 50 games. I think most people just feel its not worth the investment when they can use the extra dollars towards Intl players. Anyone that only wins 30 games is probably tanking. What is the advantage of winning 70 games over 60 games if it costs you a future Intl player. My general strategy when taking over a rebuild team is use the rule 5 draft and get almost minimum wage players off the free agent list and then use the rest for Intl players. Most games I ever lost with this strategy is 99 games

Losing 99 isn't anything to be proud of.

And anyone who wins 30 isn't probably tanking. He is. Or he's ridiculously inept at HBD.

Who said anything about 99 being something of pride? Why must you label everything? If I cared about my pride I would not of taken over lousy teams, or would I have taken on someone else losing record onto my personal record.

There are people who take on teams and lose interest before the season starts and they win 30 games for that reason. Not everyone is tanking.

herein lies the issue with not having a performance penalty built into the HBD game. If you did this repeatedly with a ML franchise there would be a financial effect on the franchise as attendance fell and 2ndary reciepts fell (the compounding problem for small market clubs). In HBD nothing happens.

If you can do it and stay below the commishes radar (or the commish doesn't care) then you have successfully "soft" tanked your way to a good team. It is this attitude of if this team can't win then I might as well only win 60 that is the bane of every league and why I stated every league as some tankers in it.

The good news for the non tankers is that it actually makes it easier to stay on top because you can pay less for mature free agents. If Coop had not had a full share of "soft" tankers the Detroit Pink Slipped's run in the NL would have been over seasons ago. You have to assess your leagues and take advantage of every situation - ultimately HBD is a variation of moneyball - find what is undervalued - as long as there are "soft" tankers it will NOT be IFA's

Why must you be a walking contradiction?

Is this better? "Anyone who wins 30 and returns the following season is tanking."

And saying "The most I've ever lost is 99" sounds like you're saying it with pride.

Also when you quote me don't omit words from the quote. The actual quote is

"Most games I ever lost with this strategy is 99 games"
3/14/2010 7:41 PM
Too long.
3/14/2010 7:51 PM
Then dont read it. That lame excuse gets old.
3/14/2010 7:57 PM
I didn't.
