This year's UK squad is no doubt at risk of having their results dealt with in this same way, but fans of the school will no doubt include any championship from this year in their bragging rights internet discussions. If Kentucky somehow ultimately turns out to be clean, so be it, but if they are ultimately not, it would be refreshing that the NCAA would require UK officials (or those from any other future cheating school) to not only vacate results, but to make an official public announcement (as part of an agreement to continue the sport within the NCAA umbrella) to the world, "we cheated, were caught, and this team and its results will be stricken entirely from any and all school publications and physical monuments." I know, this is crazy dream, but sometimes just imagining a world without hypocrisy helps me.Why shouldnt they? What has actually changed? Did those games not happen? Did they go back and change all our brackets from those years for the vacated wins so we can figure out who really won? Its not like in the Olympics when you find out someone really cheated because they used PED so they get their medals stripped. The NCAA is like the mafia, they use these kids like the cheap labor in Asia as they line their pockets with money from ticket sales, merchandise and television contracts; while making bogus rules to hold down these guys. Every school has these problems its just a matter of who gets caught. You think the average fan really cares that Camby took money from an agent or that Rose's brother traveled with the team? They don't which is why no one could care less about the NCAA vacating wins. Umass knows they went to the FF as does Memphis. What hurts them is the money they lose (which is rarely returned).

I have to agree with a lot of this. Vacating wins is about the most empty penalty that you can imagine.

Amen to what you guys are saying. I think a better punishment would have been to force Rose to admit he cheated, take away his college credits, and force him to re-pay his scholarship money. This would affect Memphis when it comes to graduation rates. Also put Memphis on probation like they have done in the past with several programs. May not seem like a lot, but it makes more sense to me.

The punishment did not fit the crime. It was not Memphis' fault. Googly Corey Maggette and Myron Piggie if you would like to see just how fair the NCAA is when administering punishments.

If he trades rosters, does he also have to sell his soul?

Don't get me started on Duke, pork.

I agree wholeheartedly. My point is that I wish the NCAA would give REAL punishments, consistently. Vacating wins is a joke, as it holds no weight except in that small "official" capacity. Heck, let's say UK eventually vacates wins with this team. Fans will still include them in the silly "who-has-more-alltime-wins" arguments. So what's the point of vacating wins (beyond allowing the NCAA to pretend to itself it's fighting the good fight)? None. I think we all agree. The only difference is the whether we're on Kentucky's "side" or not.

Duke - Magette $$$$ - please promise not to do it again

UMass - sign with agent - vacate wins

Memphis - get buddy to take SAT - vacate wins

Maryland - assistant coach gives kids rides to classes - probation, no tv, no postseason

Bingo metsmax! The Darrell Arthur incident at Kansas is also quite interesting.

And Villanova was in turmoil because players were disciplined for being late for Sunday Mass. I guess it is all perspective.

How about the NCAA suspends the damn coach and doesn't allow him to let this **** go on everywhere. If they don't have that power, automatically put any school that hires him on preemptive probation.

Part of the Memphis probation will be paying back over $600k they took in from the 2008 tourney.

And don't be surprised to see Memphis go after Coach Cal who was paid a $200k bonus for reaching the Final Four, and another $160k for winning over 80% of his games. Neither of which "really" happened.

How was it Calipari's fault that he played Rose after he was cleared by the NCAA? He clearly had zero knowledge that someone else took the SAT for him. He was not even committed to Memphis when he took the test. If I was a coach, had Derek Rose, and the NCAA said it was ok to play him, I would. No question about it. So would all of you.

Just answer me honestly, how was that Cal's fault?

One could make the argument that Cal doesn't mind going after guys who emit serious warning signs, which most other Big 6 coaches heed and he doesn't. Nothing's ever known by Cal, but there is no significant attempt to find and heed the signs. It might be akin to buying a 70-year-old house without hiring a house inspector. Perfectly legal, but not recommended, and certainly not wise. Where there's smoke, there's almost always fire. And with Cal, there is simply lots of smoke. I contend that if Florida had signed Cal, and Florida suddenly formed UK's team this year, many of those defending Cal and UK would have a very different argument. As for myself, if UNC hired such a shady coach, I would not be happy about it. Heck, I'm not really even that happy with Williams as coach, even though he's obviously successful. I don't like shady, and I don't like pricks (Williams) either. But then again, I'm an ***.

*** is your name, pooping is your game?

I do enjoy pooh-poohing things.

i think if memphis was the only big program who offered rose a scholarship, i would get what all the fuss was about. but if i recall, a handful of big programs were after him. and any of those programs would be facing the exact same situation if they managed to win the battle (well, except for duke, of course)
