ODL XXXVI Commentary Topic

Yeah Scud, Barkley's got three years in a row that are just soooo good. Any of those three are worth the draft pick. There are several other good seasons, but those three in particular are worth a top five pick IMO. I've now won two ODL's with him, and I know of at least one funk52 you've won with him, and I know Coley did really well with him in an ODL I missed (did you win that one, btw? The one where you had Magic and some other guys that haven't been drafted yet but you should know which one I'm talking about. Maybe 2 ODLs ago?)... so... yeah, he's pretty worth it imo!

I'm not a huge fan of cp3 in a $42-mill league. Maybe that's just because I've never used him, though. Seems like the 07-08 version has too few FTs for a guy with 26% usg%, and the 08-09 version has significantly more turnovers and makes less threes than the 07-08 version, yet gets to the line more, rebounds more. My first round guy either gets me a ton of boards or is a high usg% scorer, and in that case, he'd better get to the line a bunch. My biggest pet peeve in this sim is high usg% players that don't get to the line much. It makes lower usg% guys who do almost worthless (in that respect). See: Any Wilt season starting with 66-67.

CC, I have the same opinion of McHale. I've gotten more and more away from a bomber-type at the 3 and been trying to get more boards there (hey ignore my funk52 team as I say this and my past ODL lol), so that part of me is happy with the McHale pick. I'm like Scud, though, and can't believe a certain guy hasn't been picked yet, and then there are a couple of more I value enough to be in the top 10.

Glen, I'm excited to see your new strategy.

Wow, four players still on the board seem like good-to-amazing value at this point in the first round. One of them is falling farther than I think I've seen him fall in either funk52 or ODL (could be the same dude scud is watching...).

I would have gladly taken Bird, but I had a sinking feeling 98 would grab him.

I feel sick to my stomach passing up some great players (and knowing they won't last much longer), but once I reminded myself which league this is I decided to roll the dice on Billups. He's fairly easy to build around in a $42 mil league, and does everything I want from a PG - 3s, FTs, above average defense, low PFs and TOs, and his stats inflate nicely in a running game.

I highly doubt he would have fallen to me in the second round, but I'm pretty confident of getting another type of player I covet with my next pick.

I'm not saying I'm surprised, or baffled, at some of the picks but....

Well hell, you can't say anything when you don't have the experience.

No, no, speak up by all means! This adventure isn't fun without bold opinions, and all of us have been proven wrong more than once.

ltb....i was aiming for a tmac/billups backcourt so no chance he was gonna make it back to you...i think billups might be the best 42 mil pg...good pick

as for tmac...might be a little early based on the last two drafts but i didnt want to risk him being taken on the turnaround...ive never used him before and he seems like a fun building block...does everything you want from a 2

ive decided im never gonna draft a guy in the first round that i took in the first round of any previous odl or funk league...that eliminated two obvious guys that i wont hesitate to draft in the second if they keep falling

LTB - I went Billups in the first round last year and that team worked out OK - at least we made the playoffs. I'll be interested to see where you go from here.

dh555 - I'm like that too; I think I've had a completely different team in each of my 5 or so ODLs. This was the most I've thought about a 1st round pick in a while. The main three guys I was considering at my spot were Bird, Shaq, and Howard, all who bring very different things to the table. Ended up going with Shaq for his incredible efficiency and dominant paint scoring. Not positive which version I'll be using, but I do believe I have it narrowed down to 2 or 3 versions.

Targeting about 6 different players w/ my next pick; there's a very good chance all will be gone when it gets back to me, as only one of them made it out of the 2nd round last year (and at least one of them will prob. be a 1st rounder). But who knows with these crazy ODLs?

I used to think the same way about Mr. Big Shot (being the best 42-mill point guard). He's still a top 3 for me, but it depends on what you're building (whether you need a point star or a distributor). I can't say who I think the best point guard in a $42-million draft is because he hasn't been drafted yet. It's probably not who you think I'm gonna say, either!

McGrady is a definite first round talent. He's probably the fourth best shooting guard in the sim (in looking at a complete player type), and he's far cheaper than the three guys ahead of him.

I used to try and draft different guys than I had used before. I still do, occasionally, but when I go into a draft league, I have several ideas for the type of team I'm going to build, and by round 2 I generally know exactly which direction I'm going, and many of the same guys are on the top of my lists depending on what I'm looking for. I have not, however, EVER made a team with Dwight Howard, so I'm excited, but I'm going to be building it the same way as I build one of two other teams, so he'll probably have the usual suspects as teammates.

I guess my dream of getting the A-Train late in the 2nd round two drafts in a row is gone!

Bill Russell went right where he should - late first round. He's Dennis Rodman in this sim, only not as good in most of the areas that count. He gives you more minutes, more blocks, more steals and more assists than Rodman, which is cool, but turns the ball over more (but not much more) and has a much lower efg%. He does foul less (and get to the line more), so that's cool. All-in-all, I would be ecstatic to get Russell one pick before the turnaround.

Another thing about Russell - the only guy who has a higher creb% than him that plays 3300 minutes or more is Rodman. Lot of guys come close. Lot of lower minute guys are as high or higher. But with Russell, your four or five is completely covered - buy one 239k scrub and you're done. You got to love that.

My thinking about the Big O is that he does everything you want in PG, plus he rebounds like a power forward (not a great one, but still...).

I know I will have a hard time fitting under cap, but I believe the value is there. Plus he has been good to me before.

I, sort of, get the "financial" picks. I tell people in HBD that it isn't a baseball sim, it's an Economic Sim dressed around baseball- in the end, it is all about the budget.
4/23/2010 9:43 PM
The only problem with the Big O's rebounding is, %-wise, it isn't that great. You might have problems with him reaching his RL rebounding numbers.

The good thing about Oscar, IMO, is how much flexibility he gives you right off that bat. You can play him any of three positions just fine, so tons of backcourt flexibility. He also gives you a wide range of seasons to choose from. He can give you anything from a focal player at 10 mil to a pretty good cheap value from 5-6 mil.
4/23/2010 11:14 PM
Yeah, robo, the advanced stats (%s) drive this sim. His best rebounding season is around 22% creb% IIRC, which is no where close to what a good PF will give you. Still, it's way ahead of most point guards, so it means you don't have to necessarily draft a dominant rebounding frontcourt (though I won't advise against it). Diminishing returns don't happen when it comes to rebounding. It's all about what your total reb% on the floor is vs your opponent's (oreb vs dreb, dreb vs oreb).

I should have known that Nater would not make it back to me. :o(

Don't be so glum, Glen, somebody's fixing to be a very happy owner.
