This is not new.  When seble took over for TK, an engine update soon followed and reversed how it used to work.  It's back asswards now.

Before:  Hey guys, let's trap and press until they get over 1/2 court then drop into a 2-3 zone.

Now:  Hey guys, we're going to go 2-3 zone then drop back into a half-court press!!!!"

what? that makes no sense. i don't even understand what the hell that means. a zone or man defense generally does NOTHING in the first 1/2 court. so you do nothing and then drop into press? so would man and zone IQ even matter? very strange.

im not saying anything you guys are saying is wrong, or anything like that. all im saying, i dont think i am understanding what you mean, because in basketball terms, it makes absolutely no sense to me.

blackdog3377, that's the way I understand it to function, too.  The question now is, is it effective?  I haven't seen anyone run HCP/anything with great success.  It doesn't seem to force many, if any, extra TO's...and of course there are obvious drawbacks to having to know 2 defensive sets.
I would argue that you don't need to know 2 sets.  I have occasionally used the HCP in conjunction with my zone teams against teams with poor BH/Pass, particularly at the guard positions, without ever having practiced the press.  In this admittedly very small sample it has worked quite well - no significant increase in backcourt fouls but I did pick up a few extra TOs per game.  Of course, the better the other team gets at breaking the press the higher the risks get in terms of both fouls and easy buckets and the smaller the rewards.  I would not try it against even an average BH/P team without IQs I don't think...

So is there any benefit whatsoever to practicing and running a halfcourt press/ man?
Or is it just the same as straight man? or straight press?

I'd love to hear from someone who has actually run HCP/Man or HCP/Zone with some success...
