So what happens to HD when the Big 12... Topic

big 12 has given missouri and nebraska a deadline of this friday to declare their allegiance to the big 12, that looks like the primary domino waiting to fall right now

1. Big Ten wanting 12 teams at least to split the football conference into east and west for a conference championship game, hence they need an extra team or more, at 11 teams right now.

2. Big East is such a powerful conference right now with 16 teams there is talk of when the Big Ten expands they may just raid the Pac-10 and Big East in order to get up to a 16 team league. Thus the big east after being raided would go back and get teams to fill back up to 16 teams.

After which conferences like the Pac 10, SEC, ACC, Big 12 would either have to expand or die as 2 super conference would have them going on the outs.
It's not being full of myself, or the conference. SEC has set the blocks of being the best conference in America, everyone wants that title.

The SEC is sitting back, and they'll pick out when they want to join in on the expansion talks, as of right now the SEC commish hasn't even bothered discussing it, as far as I know.

Fun times in College, though.

Uh....NO. The Big East has virtually no power in football, and the pigskin, not the roundball, is what is driving these expansions. The Big East's only role in mega-expansion 2010 is to wait and see what happens with all the other conferences, they will dictate nothing of their own accord.

In one analysis, if the Big 12 falls apart, the remaining schools may grab Louisville and Cincinnati from the Big East

I'd think schools like WVU and UCONN would go right into the "New ACC" if the Big East crumbled. Then the schools like St. Johns, Marquette, Georgetown, etc that don't play football would go make a basketball conference.

I'm more interested in what happens with the MWC, frankly. Adding Boise St, plus some B12 schools like Kansas and K-State, makes them a very interesting young upstart conference.

If 8 teams leave the Big 12, they'd need a lot more than Louisville and Cincinnati to survive. Maybe get Memphis and go back to the glory days of the Metro Conference. I see it just as likely that Kansas would join Louisville and Cincinnati in the BigEast.

The big thing with Notre Dame saying no to the Big 10 is the fact that they got all of this TV money for football and don't have to split it with anyone!

Join the Big 10, lose millions upon millions of dollars....I'd rather have the money if I'm a fine academic institution like Notre Dame...

NBC pays them out I think a little under $10M dollars/year, the Big Ten would be able to pay around $20M dollars/year.

Notre Dame brings in close to $20 million a year. Of which the NBC contract for $9-10 million is a part. Also includes a 100% take of any bowl game.

However if ND joins the Big Ten, the Big Ten Network may be able to raise that price for suscribers (currently ranging from 10 cents to over a dollar per subscriber) as well as open additional markets. In addition, the national contract (espn) would be far more valuable with a ND included. I think the SEC's new contract brings in $200 million a year from espn/abc/cbs.

I could easily see ND bringing to the Big Ten far above the $20 million and all parties would take home more.

Yeah, I was merely talking about last year in the Big 10 without adding Notre Dame into the mix.

The SEC deal pays out $20M per team as well.

I don't understand ANY Notre Dame argument for not joining.

So ND makes about $20mil per year. How much more would they get by adding the Big Ten money? It would be a bigger boost for the other B10 schools and the BTN than it would for ND.

Plus, then they can't thumb their noses at everyone while saying how independent they are.

If what's happening turns out to be true, and ND doesn't join up with the Big 10, they will be behind. College Football is changing, and ND needs to go along with it.

I fully agree with you there. I just think ND is too arrogant/greedy to do it.
