On this date in 70s baseball history:

1978 - Billy Martin - who'd been forced to resign 5 days earlier over his drunken "One's a born liar, the other's convicted" rant about Reggie Jackson and George Steinbrenner - makes a surprise appearance at Yankee Stadium's old-timers game, where the ecstatic crowd is informed that he'll be back as the Bronx Bombers' manager in 1980 (Steinbrenner would end up bringing him back early when he fired Bob Lemon midway through the 79 season.  Martin himself would end up getting fired again and not making it to 1980 after he gets into a drunken brawl with a marshmallow salesman in a Minneapolis hotel).

A truly bizarre time in NY baseball history.  I remember the Sports Illustrated cover story with Reggie Jackson's failed bunt attempt -- "The Bunt That Went BOOM!"
