Thanks Brian -- but I got out of line.  I did. He deserved it, but I am sure I crossed the line.  I just am part of a world that is sick of vetoing all the deals he proposes to new owners with no experience -- and Mike is absolutely right, is newbie raping them.

It's not good for the new owners, and it's terrible for the world.  David's  opinion is that, "It's up to them to know what's best for them." I think that is such a callous and terrible way to play the game that I absolutely lit into him.  I don't regret anything I said.  I don't regret doing it.

But I certainly said things that were over the line.

They just all happen to be true.

Yep saying like it is. The first piece of advice I give any Newbie is NOT to make any trades and go slowly on the FA market.

-Firstly there are owners out there that 'smell newbie' and do try to pawn off bad contracts on them while taking some blue chip prospects in exchange OR worse.

-Secondly there are a fair number of FAs every season that ask for more $$ than they are actually worth. At least to start with.

I tell them one of the most important things about HBD is understanding ratings and how to evaulate players etc.. This takes time before a new owner understands ratings and they effect performance... to make a trade or signing a FA before you do... is just inviting a mistake they will regret later!.

Rebuilding takes time, problem is a lot of new owners are eager to be competitive RIGHT NOW...this is what these experienced owners take advantage of. Then when we veto etc, they don't like it... too bad. I refer to them as Newbie Predators...a lower life form and bad for a HBD world.

That goodness for newbies, the rest of you are just getting too darned smart. I can't get you guys to trade me a good player for three marginal major leaguers anymore.

Funny that trop is now the arbiter of "what's good for the world"...

I hate you.  Had you not posted, I would not have read a book by a sub .500 owner doling out HBD advice.

I don't advise NOT to make trades in the first season...just not to be in a rush to be competitive RIGHT NOW!  That leads to mistakes AND leads right in the hands of what I called "Newbie Predators"..  This is NOT nonsense.   I've seen way too many over eager new owners make bad decisions right out the gate, signing a FA that isn't close to being worth what he's asking for example.  The new owner gets the FA cause no experienced owner bid on him (knowing he's not worth it). Now he's stuck with a long term chain to his ankle...  hindering his rebuilding.  OR that questionable trade....  It takes a little time to sort out what the team needs and what works etc.

Nobody picks up how the ratings work etc right away, it does take a little time.  If you don't know or are unsure... how can you tell whether a trade is good for your team or if you are being fleeced?  How can you tell if an FA is really worth his asking price of 6 mill or not??  Until you do, it's just silly to make such moves.

I think most new owners if they take their time and ask a lot of question in the chat forum, can start to get a real handle on things by the Draft.  Then they are in a better position to look at the draft prospects and maybe make some trades that can help the rebuilding process.

Being in rush more often than not means a 1 season run  and out, with another new owner taking over the a franchise that's even in worse shape...

My advice is simple.  If you're not sure, don't do it.  And someone with 0 games of HBD shouldn't be sure.

If you think to yourself 'holy crap, this guy with 50 seasons played is offering me this awesome deal,' he probably isn't

EXACTLY.. also I tell them, ASK!  The 4 worlds I'm in there are a lot solid owners willing to help.  So I tell them to ask in the chat forum.
