The first player was removed from the 40 when he was traded and the second was removed when he was released. Players are not automatically put on the 40 when they are traded or signed. So, therefore, neither player was on the 40 when they opted for free-agency.

I assume you researched that but it makes perfect sense.     Players on the 40 do not opt for FA.

I just looked at their transactions on their cards.

Yeah, I saw that but it doesn't specifically say "removed from 40".    A released player is obviously removed from the 40 and a traded player has to be added to the 40 after the deal but mhshult is pretty adamant that these guys opted for FA.   I was hoping for clear cut "evidence" to present.

I think it pretty clear cut. When A player is traded and added to the 40, it says "added to 40". It doesnt say that on there cards.

I was looking for a "Removed from 40 man" transaction.  It made sense that they wouldn't be on the 40 man if they were released or left via free agency (since they're no longer on a team).  I'll send in a ticket to admin to confirm.  I could be off.

I stand corrected...

"As long as he stays on your 40 man roster he will not be eligible for free agency. If he ever changes teams such as by trade that team will have to place him on the ML roster first. However, it's possible it will lead to early retirement."

I think this is a much better example of eternity in the minors...I kinda want him to get 3000 hits...
