I thought the various tie breakers for max bids meant that only one team would be told that they were the top bidder during the process.

That sucks if the former team didn't win him - it was my understanding that the former team would have the first tiebreaker.  Did you offer the true maximum (10m bonus, notrade clause, player option)?

well its only if a player has been w/ his former team for 5+ seasons.  Don't know if that was the case in this situation or not, but this does seem odd.

it was NOT the case as the league is only 4 years old
