1.  Forum jinx
2.  False humility
3.  Lack of confidence
4.  Something I haven't thought of

I think, perhaps, it's people taking a real life mentality into a simulated game.  We often compare HBD to real life, so I'm sure some people figure they can use reverse psychology on an opponent the same way they can in real life.  You play the underdog card in real life, you can inflate your opponents ego, perhaps get them over confident, and you can win more fan support.  Those factors can definitely help you in certain situations.

Of course, that has no application in, or bearing on HBD...but I'm sure when the mindset kicks in, people aren't always going through the thought process rationally.

Well I don't make the playoffs much in HBD but in the sim I say it because it's true. 106 playoffs 27 finals 7 championships
