What's the difference between asking the potential for a transfer and asking the coach at Cal. for a D3 player potential when I'm coaching at CMHMS, so I don't have to scout CA? Every coach can do it so it's not cheating, right?
Because this is asking about one specific player that only one specific coach knows the potential for. Asking for potential about someone included in the scouting service is going under the table to get information but for a transfer everyone that is interested knows who to ask for information.
But what's the difference? Everyone has the same in-game tools to get the information on any player. For HS/JUCO you can FSS or scout the player using scouting trips. For transfers and internationals, you have scouting trips to get potential. Your goal of asking another coach is to save money from using scouting trips. That's unethical and cheating.
Or to make the situation more similar to your scenario. Suppose you are recruiting an international player from Russia who's currently considering UNC. UNC passed on him after signing and you want to know if you should recruit him. You have the option of using scouting trips (the ingame, legit way of getting potential) or ask the UNC coach whether he scouted the player and if so, what were the potentials of the player. Method 2 is the same as you asking for information on a transfer.
